no but hear me and my dumb opinion out it is so fucking vindicating to have andromache be like i will suffer contempt i will collect your ashes to quynh, like idk about u guys but literally as a person of colour just existing in a predominantly white space is a constant dance of. minimising yourself your presence your emotions yourSELF to protect yourself. you lash out (and not even ever from a place of malice but one of like genuine hurt) and you're expected to wipe white tears or suffer the "why aren't you acting fine why are you being a problem now" and it's so like. andy isn't asking quynh to let go of her grief or her anger shes not diminishing it she's just stating simply she'll be there. like that's everything to me they're everything to me

many thoughts including that i've rarely seen such careful, conscious, purposeful attention to non-romantic (and to be fair even romantic) relationships in a movie that wasn't literally about relationships - let alone a superhero action flick. like, we joke that the old guard feels like fic, but it's because it's written through a feelings-first lens, because it's about characterization before plot, and those are things we associate with fanfic, among other things. and also that this type of stories is disproportionately written and loved by women, but that's a whole other topic

something abt the prioritisation of character over action - the old guard obviously has a plot, but that plot itself is driven by the characters' relationships (booker, copley, even nile) and their choices as people rather than as plot devices. the reason any of the things happening onscreen are important arent because of great world consequences (though those are implied) but because of how much these people mean to each other! what quynhs loss does to andy but also to joe and nicky, niles family, bookers family, booker and andy, joe and nicky and who they are to each other! with the script we have added: booker joe and nicky, lykon to quynh. these are the driving moments!!! and you know what? it's no less meaningful for being about 5 or 6 people and not half of the universe!
