Rain - a "Protect the Princess" (Guard Amirinthe x Queen Zendelle) oneshot
We're back here with my OCs again, folks~
Also some much-needed context before you read: Zendelle has the ability to summon/control lightning. But the only time she uses it is when she's in a war she feels she can't win, and therefore she only uses it at its strongest levels. This causes a major issue for her body, specifically her sensory nerves. The sensory nerves in her forearms are damaged, and she therefore cannot feel anything in those areas (which are covered in lightning "tattoos").
PLEASE NOTE THAT "_word/sentence_" MEANS THAT IT SHOULD BE IN ITALICS - I WAS JUST TOO LAZY TO CHANGE IT‼️
Okay, that's all! ENJOY MY LESBIANS‼️‼️🗣️🌦️🌈

The sound of the rain encompassed time in that moment - it hit the ground lightly but still deafened me to the rest of the world. I could smell the freshness it brought - the promise of fertile land in this kingdom.
_My subjects must be overjoyed..._
I inhaled the air whilst taking a breath so deep that I feared my lungs might burst. It was soothing...until the rain grew louder, hitting the ground with a fierceness that terrified me.
The faint buzz accompanied with the barely sizzling smell in the air was unmistakable. Lightning was to come soon, and to bring with it a storm. Though I've known the sensation all my life, fear still gripped at me with a hold tight enough to incapacitate.
"Shouldn't you be inside, your majesty?"
I jolted at the voice a few feet away from me.
_Strange... I didn't hear her footsteps approach._
I looked out at the garden in front of us, one wet with the dew that this crying sky brought. The flowers sagged with the weight and the onslaught of the rain's unceremonious landing.
"If you think too long, you'll catch a cold," Amirinthe informed as she sat next to me, too close to be appropriate for someone in her position.
"A cold is the least of my worries, Princess."
I could practically hear the eyeroll at the title. "I don't know how you managed to make a title of mockery sound like an endearing nickname."
"I'm just good at making things sound better than they are~"
"Didn't sound that way when you told me you were thinking. Did I make you speechless then?" Her giggle warmed the smallest bit of my melancholy, and a part of me clutched onto that warmth as if it was my one and only hope of an escape from the mess I made myself into.
"You make me speechless with almost every word that falls from your mouth, Princess."
"You telling me I talk too much?"
"On the contrary, you don't talk enough."
I stole a glance at her then, and took pride in the smile that glossed over her face, before it disappeared in a matter of seconds.
"Zen... What were you thinking about?"
My hand instinctively reached for my arm, though I couldn't feel the contact - not completely. My thumb gently traced the lightning scars that littered my arms, feeling a pain in them that left my body numb - a worse punishment than I ever imagined possible.
I was sure Amirinthe figured it out by then.
I could feel the gentle touch that occurred moments later - her hand loosely grasped my shoulder and her thumb rubbed circles into my robe.
"Love, why are you watching the rain if you hate it?"
"I don't _hate_ the rain..."
"It's what comes after the drizzle that..." My voice became soft as I got up to look at the greying clouds - a sign that what was to come was near.
Amirinthe got up as well, a practiced display of confidence marking her face. "Then why not enjoy the drizzle?"
With those words of ominous positivity, she rolled up her sleeves and jumped into the garden area. Little droplets dripped down her skin, creating goosebumps where there were once none. She smiled brightly up at the sky, as if she were posing a challenge to it. That smile shone brightly against the dreary greys and greens of the garden, appearing like the sun behind the clouds.
And then she looked at me.
Her hand stretched out to take mine, her grin beckoning and her eyes gleaming.
If there was one thing that would always remain true in this world, it was that I was a slave to her whims.
And so, I made my stride forward, and grasped her hand as she spinned and frolicked over the grass, taking heed to not step on the flowers - some of which were not yet in bloom. Her other hand found its way to my waist and, gently, she pulled me with her in this improvised dance.
The rain soaked her guard's uniform, and her hair managed to shake water droplets into my eyes. The harsh pattering of the rain drowned out almost every sound of the world beyond, but her voice deafened me to all but her.
It was as if the rain softened with her whispers, as if its screams against the ground became little more than silence.
As if, for once in all my life, the numbness in my body took its leave, and her touch was all I felt.
"I love you. And I'll protect you. I promise."
I felt her touch my neck, and then my cheek. And I trembled in her arms with each slight brush of her skin against mine. Her lips felt so soft on mine - they were warm like her words, of which were warmer still. Slowly, I took hold of her forearm, returning the gentleness she had gifted me. Unlike her lips, the skin of her arms suffered from the cold, and the goosebumps stayed frozen on her as evidence.
_What I would give to warm her up right now..._
I pulled her body closer as the thunder roared in the distance. I didn't jolt or falter as I heard it, a newfound bravery seizing me with every breath felt from Amirinthe. The fear of the storm, of the _lightning_ that swore to strike me down one day, was nothing in the face of her. She'd conquer a storm if given the chance, and I wished for nothing less than that.
She pulled away from me upon hearing the second roar of the distant thunder, lacing her fingers through mine seconds later. "We should head back inside... I'm shivering over here-"
I smiled at her suggestion, with new ideas bubbling to the surface of my mind - ideas that never would have came to me if it wasn't for this rainy day.
"You know, I think I like the rain."
