Final Response
The final chapter of Dustin Kidd's text, Pop Culture Freaks, wraps up the text by delving back into the topic of the media matrix. He connects the text back to the Matrix concept that is presented in the motion film, "The Matrix", by stating that "The Matrix can be viewed as a metaphor for the mass media matrix and more broadly the corporate matrix that spans the globe" (pg 218). The main emphasis of the last chapter though is more about accepting that we are all part "freak" in some form or another. We all have things that set us apart from one another and make us uniquely our own, so it is extremely important that we recognize these things and embrace them as best as we can. Kidd states that "The matrix of privilege and oppression makes many people feel like freaks within their own society and strangers within their own communities" (pg. 224), which is a huge part of how we identify ourselves. The matrix of our society plays a huge role in not just how we view ourselves, but how we judge others, and those portrayed within the media as well. I think that Kidd did a great job writing the text, and this chapter sums up all of the important pieces that, quite honestly, everyone needs to hear. I appreciate that he ends the chapter with "Reader, let your freak flag fly" because it really drives home the issue of representation in our society today. No matter what your race, religion, sexual identity, disability or otherwise, the lesson to take away from this text is to be more conscientious and accepting of those around us and how the media portrays various demographics in society. I think that this was a great text to be required for the class and I was definitely made aware of countless issues in society that I otherwise would have kept blindly ignoring.
