“I don’t believe in not taking care of the people that take care of you. I think it’s just, you know, principle. With that, comes a lot of hard work. It’s not easy trying to be dignified and do right by people, and making sure that the people that are there for you along the way, that you’re helping to bring them up at the same time. But, that’s the only way I know how to do it.”

A lot of people have preconceptions about Marilyn Monroe simply because she was blonde and simply because of some of her film roles. They never bother to look behind the screen and always laugh or scoff when someone points out that she was intelligent and witty. Because they’ve seen one of her films – probably ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ or ‘The Seven Year Itch’ – and automatically assume that her role was who she was in person. Surely no one could act dumb without actually being dumb, right? Wrong. I’d say that if people think she was ‘dumb’, it only shows what an amazing actress she was. Marilyn was a very insecure person that despite everything she had to go through never stopped striving for what she wanted. Life was never easy for her. As a child she faced sexual abuse and grew up in various foster homes due to having a mother that struggled with her own issues, and Marilyn never made it a secret that she had a tough childhood. Popular rumors say that she slept her way to fame but that is completely false. She was a hardworking woman that got her first leading role years after her first credited role so she did not become famous over a night no matter what anyone says and despite her popularity, she was paid a lot less than most of the actresses at that time. Marilyn spent a lot of time reading to make up for her lack of education since she never finished school and her personal library consisted of around 400 books (see more information here!). She always strove for self-improvement. Not only did she read a lot but she also attended acting classes, singing and dance classes, studied Art Appreciation and Literature at UCLA and made sure to exercise to stay healthy. Yes, she was addicted to medication and yes, she was sometimes hard to work with. But it is not fair to hold that against her because such issues didn’t just spring out of nowhere, there were reasons behind her tardiness and addiction. Though despite life being hard, Marilyn fought and never gave up. For example, she was the third woman ever to set up her own production company after she walked out on her studio, she believed in equal rights, she married for love, she was incredibly generous and donated not only money but also her time to various charities (read more about that here!). I’ve heard people say that she’s a bad role model, I’ve heard people call her all sorts of things and I know people tend to not listen when presented with the actual facts.. But Marilyn is still loved by so many and she’s the best role model anyone could ever have. Strong, intelligent, loving and caring, witty, beautiful inside and out.. That’s our Marilyn.
