"Hello, Steve." (AU where Peggy meets Past Steve in the 1970s while married to Future Steve?)
Steve froze completely. For just a moment all he could think about was how badly he’d wanted to hear that voice say those two words to him, how long it had been since he’d heard it last. He wanted to turn around and hold her and beg her forgiveness for having been gone so long when all he wanted was to be here, with her.
But time was against them, here as ever, as always.
“Never was much good as a spy,” he said.
He swallowed as he turned, giving her a nervous look over his shoulder. She didn’t look panicked. She really ought to be scared, shouldn’t she? In this time, he’d been dead for nearly thirty years. She was so beautiful. His throat felt almost too tight to speak.
“Hi, Peggy.”
agentnamed:
“So happy,” Peggy said tears coming to her own eyes, she wanted to tell him everything, about how they’d see each other again, how he’d come back to her and they would live this amazing life.
But she couldn’t, not now.
“I love you, Steve.”
He wanted to stay here, with her. The only thing that stopped him was knowing if he did… he damned the whole universe. The stakes had never been higher, he couldn’t fold now.
“I love you, too,” he whispered. “I never stopped.” He was glad she was happy. God, he wished he could tell her the same, but all he felt was grief for a life he could have had with her.
“I know,” she kissed him again sweeter this time, if only she could hold him forever, but she had to keep reminding herself that Steve would come back to her and that he was waiting for her at home.
“You are the love of my life, don’t forget that.” She said instead, pressing her forehead to his, anything to be close to him in this moment.
“Just promise me something, you’ll do what makes you happy, even if its selfish.”
Steve closed his eyes as she pressed their foreheads together, trying to memorize everything about this moment, gathering it all up to hold onto. The feeling of her hands on his, the smell of her hair.
It was… an odd request. But he nodded. “I will.” He could promise her that much, at least.
After the fight against Thanos had ended, after Tony’s funeral, Bruce reminded them that they had to bring the gems back - it had to be someone who could navigate the timestream well, get into the SHIELD base, and carry Mjolnir. At that moment, Steve suddenly realized what her request had meant, why Peggy hadn’t been surprised to see him. He could return. Back to the very beginning.
It wasn’t a hard choice to make - after all… he’d already done it.
Steve used the last Pym particles to bring himself to 1949. She might not believe him - not at first. But she would eventually. Steve knocked on the door of her apartment and waited.
The knock at the door was unexpected, but with Angie working the nightshift Peggy figured that the waitress had forgotten her keys.
“Forget something, Ang-” the words died in her mouth. There stood Steve Rogers, alive by the grace of God.
“… Steve?” She found her voice at last, as she stared at him in disbelief.
Steve froze there, staring at her. She was just as beautiful as she’d been the day he’d last seen her. To her, he’d look ten years older than the last time she’d seen him, and far more war wearied. He couldn’t breathe for a moment, even as she finally said his name.
“Hi, Peg,” he breathed. He couldn’t help a small, sad smile. He didn’t dare reach out to her - not yet. He didn’t want to scare her.
“I- I can explain it all,” he promised. “I missed you so bad, Peggy.”
His lips were moving, but she couldn’t hear what was being said, so instead of asking a million questions swirling in her mind, Peggy launched herself into his arms and kissed him as hard as she dared.
“I thought I lost you,” she whispered brokenly when at last she pulled away for air, “where have you been?”
Steve’s arms wrapped around her, lifting her up just a litte as he hugged her close. His eyes fell shut as she kissed him, his whole body relaxing against hers. For ten years he had wandered alone and aimless - and he finally felt like he’d come home.
“I know… I thought I died, Peg. I - I froze to death I thought, but I was found still frozen seventy years after.” He paused. This was going to be hard to explain - it hardly made sense even to him. She was probably going to think he was nuts. “I was thawed out in the year 2012. And I stayed there until 2023…and by then- Howard Stark’s kid invented- a way to come back here… to now. To you.”
There was pain and hope all tangled together in his expression. “If you’ll let me… I’m here for good.”
Peggy was still trying to process that he was here and gently pulled him inside, shushed him.
"Darling, wait. I want to know everything just, wait until we get inside first." She said, leading Steve into the den, Peggy guided him to the couch.
"Now, first thing's first, of course I will have you. Secondly, you're telling me that not only does Howard have a son in the future, but he invented time travel?"
"Steve, Darling, it's time to wake up."
There’s a soft grunt in response to his wife’s words. “Mm, no. Five more minutes,” he mumbled.
"Steven," she admonished gently, running her fingers through his hair. As adorable as he was, she needed to get him up.
"You need to get up, its time to wake up and start the day."

“Of course I came back.” But, they certainly didn’t have any children together. Steve had only been back for a few months at this point. She wasn’t making any sense.
“Peggy..” Steve voice is soft as he reaches to places his hand over hers. “I’m not– I’m not your husband, Peg. I wasn’t there.” Maybe if he was just blunt with her, it would make her understand. Sometimes he was afraid of pushing things too far and upsetting her.
Peggy looked back at the photo and scowled, she was certain that it was Steve who took the photo, she could see him in her memories as clear as day. No, she was sure of who she’d married, who she’d had children with.
She looked at the hand covering hers, noticing for the first time the lack of a wedding band.
Oh God, what had she done?
“No. Of course not,” Peggy said trying to cover her mistake, she had nearly put the whole universe at risk with this stupid slip of the tongue, curse her and her failing memory, she remembered now that Steve had warned her about letting his past self know the future.
“My mistake, it was my husband who took the photo.”
"I said I would help you find him, not catch him." ( from steve )

“This is not the time for sentimentality, Steven!” Peggy said frustrated, The Winter Soldier had killed Howard and Maria Stark. He had left her friends murdered on the road and Peggy would make him pay.
“It’s time that the Winter Soldier dies, so that Barnes can live.”
