“I’m Claire, Claire Carter.” She grinned at him, fluffy brown curls bouncing a little as she held her hand out. -agentclairecarter (hi! Hope this is ok.)
“Hello..” He narrowed his eyes and gave a small smirk. “Carter huh? Any relation to Peggy?”
“My aunt,” she scuffed a hand through her curls, suddenly conscious of her brown skin. “My Dad was black, you know, before you ask and all.”
“You look as beautiful as your aunt. Even more can I add. I bet you have the kick ass attitude too right?”
“It seems to be a family trait,” she grinned, crossing her arms over her chest. “What about you? Can you kick ass?”
He smirked. “I’m slightly hurt that your aunt didn’t tell you about me. I’ve been known to kick a few asses in my time.”
Claire rolled her eyes at him. “My aunt preferred to teach me how rather than just telling me stories.”

“You know, ain’t like I’m still five years old, you know? Ain’t like I’m gonna be sitting every night asking my mom ‘when’s daddy coming home?’ You know? Who needs him?“
“Hey baby, I noticed you noticing me and I just wanted to put you on notice that I noticed you too.”
“Could you drop me off at the beach?”
“Oh my God, ___! What’s that hideous thing growing out of your neck? Ah, never mind. It’s just your head.”
“Man, I love Halloween! It’s the only time of year when a black man can wear a mask at night and not get arrested!”
“You did a porno movie?“
“Girl/boy, you look so good, I would marry your brother/sister just to get in your family.”
“Maybe I sometimes say things that are selfish and self-centered, but that’s who I am, dammit.”
“Ain’t no thang but a chicken wing.”
“I’m as big as a house. All I want to do is lie in bed and eat pie.”
“How come he don’t want me, man?”
“Face it, you’re a taker.”
“You bought your own dinner?”
“Oh, stop it you little Filthy McNasty.”
“Your pop had a bit of a drinking problem, didn’t he?”
“Jean Claude Van Dam I’m fine!“

“How could you be so stupid? You know you shouldn’t be messing with drugs!“
“My son/daughter/child could have died because of you!”
“Did you see the way he/she/they was/were dressed?”
“Oh, my God. I’m a drug addict *and* a virgin!”
“Shut up! Shut up, shut up. Now be quiet!”
“I’m going to the kitchen for a snack when I get back I want you gone.”
“I ain’t no bungee expert or nothin’, but I don’t think he’s supposed to be slamming into the ground like that.”
“Don’t do anything stupid! You haven’t updated your will yet.“
“I can still hear them taunting him. ‘Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids.’ Why couldn’t they just give him some cereal?”
“I guess I can kiss heaven goodbye ‘cause it’s got to be a sin to look this good.”
“Yo baby, I know your feet must be tired ‘cause you been walking through my mind all day!”
“Well, I’m in a bad mood, and somebody is going to suffer.”
“You smell like broccoli.”
Steve noticing something weird about Sam…a nervous tick that he gets whenever he’s in the vicinity of police. Steve doesn’t get it for a while, Sam has a beyond spotless record, hell, even Laura Barton had a wilder youth. But it’s definitelyly a tick. Sam freezes, puts his hands slightly forward and spreads his fingers, tilting his head down. It’s a very natural, casual looking walk, except his face clouds over into a blank mask. It happens so quickly, rolling away like a cloud when they’re fifty yards past that Steve isn’t sure that even Sam knows he’s doing it. It even happens after public missions, when police come to aid cleanup. Sam tends to stick around the fire rescue or paramedics. Once a pair of officers approached him and Sam looked ready to fly right back out for a split second before he caught himself and gave his statement.
Steve is trying to think it through over drinks with Nick when the director just shakes his head, “It’s a form of ptsd”
“There really aren’t a ton of American police in Afghanistan,” Steve says irritated.
“Yea, but there are in Harlem. You ever read a police blotter? They don’t publicize one tenth of the shit that really goes down there. There’s a 300% chance he saw a lot of bad shit going down and it wasn’t always headed by the so called bad guys. Your man had ptsd before he joined up,” Nick finished his whiskey in a single gulp and gestured for another, “We all did”

agentclairecarter:
“I wouldn’t know.” Claire stared at the underside of the small overhanging roof. “I never really had home.” She glanced at the proffered keys. Claire took a moment to weigh the idea. She wanted to leave. To get away from the painful piece of her past currently sitting in her brother’s family home.
But that would be selfish.
“No.” She finally said. “Your family is here and you deserve to see them. It’s not a big deal. I’m sorry for the knife in the floor too, I was just acting on a stupid instinct.” Claire played with her fingers, dragging her thumbnail under the curve of her middle’s. “I’m guessing you have some questions too.” Claire wasn’t an idiot and she knew her brother well. He was no doubt curious about what the hell just went down in his family’s foyer.
~Sean POV~
“Ugh,” Sean grunted as he rolled over and sat up. Man did Carter pack a fucking punch these days. Glancing up at the surrounding Toretto family, he sighed.
“I’m in trouble, aren’t I?” He asked.
‘I never really had a home.’ Brian let the words linger in the air a little longer. It was like Claire and Brian were two pods from the same tree. Because whatever she was going through or had to deal with and conquer, Brian could practically say the same about himself. He knew how to relate. And it was probably the reason why they worked so well with each other. “Then maybe we should change that. No. We need to change that.” He emphasized as he chose his words carefully. “What do you wanna define as ‘home’?”
The last thing he wanted to do was create anymore tension. There was already enough of that. “Not a big deal? Depends on who you’re asking. The offer still stands.” He continued to hold out the keys. But his mind wondered. Even when he didn’t want it too. It still did. Which meant curiosity was sinking in. But he also didn’t want to force her to talk about anything right now either. She was already dealing with enough problems. It didn’t help she had to add one more thing to those problems. “Instinct or not, it gives everyone the very idea that you don’t take shit from no one. That’s commendable among us. Because you shouldn’t. This is your life. You live it as you choose to live it.”
He drew out a breath as his eyes wondered off into the distance again. “But…considering what actually did happen in there? Yes.” He paused as he returned his gaze to her. There was a bit of sternness in his voice. “I have questions. What the hell was that about?”
-*-
Meanwhile, beyond the front door in the foyer, there was an awkward silence among the occupants. If there wasn’t a stiff and intimidating stance on the older Toretto beforehand, there was one now. But Dom was also a man of little words, chose them rather wisely and always expected his actions to speak more for him. It was hard to know what he was thinking.
“Trouble? More like had your balls handed to you on a silver platter with an extra side of ass whooping.” Roman was the first to break the silence. And he was doing his level best not to laugh out loud, but his tone said otherwise. He stifled his chuckling considering the grim look on Dom’s face. “You lucky your hand is still intact.“ Roman quickly added before disappearing back into the living room.
At a time like this, it was definitely best to keep comments to themselves. Tej and Jimmy followed after Roman knowing it was one conversation they didn’t need to be directly involved with. Even if curiosity sunk in from all parties who witnessed what had just gone down. Letty moved slowly towards Dom, hoping to maintain some level of calm. It was hard to tell when the bald man could burst into a violent outburst or verbal backlash. Or even if he would at all.
“Pick your words wisely, Boswell. You wanna tell me what that’s all about?” Dom advised as he crossed his arms over his chest. He was expecting to get those answers quickly, too.
“We need to change that.”
Claire swallowed hard at her brother’s words, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. “I don’t want to feel like I’m lying,” she finally settled on, the words forcing their way through the thickness in her throat. “Even in New York, with my mom, I feel like I’m lying, playing a character that she wants to see. When I’m home, I don’t want to feel like that.”
She glanced at the keys and shook her head again. Once again, Claire was following her family creed when she didn’t need to. Duty above all else wasn’t something that needed to be applied to things like this. If she hadn’t had that pressed so firmly into her, she would have taken the keys. Bur it was and she didn’t.
“We met before, he was in my class in eighth grade.” Claire swallowed again. “It was the last day of school, so the school held a dance. My mom even took time off to take me shopping for a dress. It was blue.” Why she felt the need to add that detail, Claire didn’t know, but she did. “He was popular I guess. He had friends. And I... I was this chubby black girl with frizzy hair and braces and no friends. I had a stupid crush on him and he didn’t even know I existed. But at the dance, I found some courage and I asked him if he wanted to dance.” Claire sniffle and wiped her nose as she told him everything. “He laughed in my face and dumped punch on my dress. He called me a few names, of the racial variety, and I ran out in tears. Called my mom and asked her to come get me. I never saw him again until now.”
She huffed the tiniest of dry laughs. “That same night I was recruited into SHIELD. And I have no regrets about that.”
~*~
“I noticed,” Sean muttered, rolling his sore shoulder. Not only could Claire punch his lights out with clear ease if she wanted, she almost popped his shoulder out of it’s socket while wearing heels and a skirt. If he hadn’t been impressed before, he was now.
“I was a stupid fourteen year old,” Sean summed it up. “I was trying to fit in at a school I was going to be leaving and I humiliated a girl for no reason and I’ve regretted it ever since. I called her a few slurs, I dumped punch on her dress, and I laughed in her face when she asked me to dance.” Sean swallowed hard and bowed his head, not exactly quailing under the Toretto patriarch's firm look but not standing up to it either. “I was stupid and racist and a total jackass to a girl who had been nothing but sweet to me anytime we talked. I’ve regretted it since the second it happened and I want to apologize but she ran off and I moved two days later.”
Sean flexed his hand and pulled the knife from the floor. “If you want me to leave, I’ll leave, just let me call Han and get a ride back to Tokyo first.”
agentclairecarter:
“I know.” Her response was muffled by the fact that she had buried her face in his shirt. “But don’t forget, you’re stuck with me too. This-” their partnership “-ain’t ending until you retire or I become Director of SHIELD.” Claire had goals and the main one was to be Director of SHIELD by the time she was 35. She pulled back and swiped a stray curl from her face. “You wanna go for a drive?” She asked, knowing his answer already. “We’re already halfway to Montauk. We could go there.” The base they were at was on the road to the small town and it had been awhile since Claire had been there. Not since she was ten actually.
“So…what if I decide to retire next week?” It was a joke of course. He wasnt going to. Because whether it was a selfish addiction or not to be pulled into the adrenaline rush of being a SHIELD agent, he concluded none of this would have came to be without making it clear why he signed on in the first place. Family. To protect what meant the most to him. And now Claire was part of that circle, unintentional or not. “Are you sure you want that kind of responsibility? Wishful thinking and all, good luck trying to get Fury to retire himself. Sounds like he’ll be around until his final breath.” He also teased at the notion of her wanting to become the director of SHIELD. Of course being out in New York meant taking in the sights. Of the entire state if need be. There was a lot to see and explore, much like California. “Is this one of those daytime trips being a tourist?” He cocked an eyebrow as he laughed.
“Then I’ll kick your ass until you un-retire!” Claire threatened, not so jokingly. “We’ve got at least a good ten years left until you need to get out. I’m not letting you leave after barely a year!” Her brother was stuck with her for awhile and she wasn’t gonna let him walk out of her life so easily. “I know I can do it. I didn’t make that wish lightly.” Claire knew full well how stressful being the director could be, but she was determined to keep Fury’s work preserved. He was the first African-American director, Claire would be the second as well as the first female of color to hold the position. It was a matter of determination to keep the position in the hands of those that many would dismiss as being unable or unqualified to do it. SHIELD was at the height of it’s power under Fury and would advance further under hers. She would make sure of it. “Yeah,” she grinned. “Just us having some time at the beach like normal brothers and sisters do. Please?”
therealoconner: “I’m not apologizing for what I said to that asshole… He was saying terrible things about you. I meant it when I said I would protect you.”
@agentclairecarter : continued from here
“Thanks bro.” Claire mumbled, trying to give her older brother a smile. “I appreciate it.” She leaned up and kissed his cheek. “Love you. Lots. Think we can go get some ice cream now?”
Not that she needed the protection, but Brian also couldn’t let those comments and remarks slide so easily either: about her skin color, her gender and even her cultural roots. Brian knew how to fight back. Don’t ever taunt him. It was a respect thing. And too many people these days no longer gave it. But it wasn’t like the other guy even had a clue he was going up against a former cop either. The verbal altercation quickly turned into a physical one. And even if the other guy had more muscle strength than Brian (a few blows to the jaw and an attempted chokehold left Brian winded), it didn’t take long before the rude and ignorant man was pinned to the ground begging for mercy. “I don’t care who the hell you think you are. You don’t disrespect a woman! Ever. Especially one who could actually instill more levels of pain than I am right now.” Plus the guy had the nerve to pull a knife on Brian too. So he had to defend himself and disarm his aggressor quickly and efficiently.
Brian ran a hand over his jaw and frowned. Even if his jaw wasn’t made of glass, he was sure a bruise would form soon. His mind wondered back to the fight he had moments ago. He let the guy go. And run off in an embarrassing heap. That’s all he could do. Don’t make too much of a scene of everything already. He didn’t need to explain more than he needed to. He looked over at Claire and pushed open a soft smile. “Yeah. Let’s go get some ice cream.” Considering that was their mission in the first place before the fight even happened. “And if anyone asks, this never happened.”
Claire had passively watched her brother attack the other agent, a warm feeling in her thin chest. Her trainer had never done that before, nor had any of her previous (and extremely brief) partners. “Course not. What are we talking about?” She asked, a faux blankness in her voice.
The knife she kept in her pocket (a gift from someone she had yet to confess even to Brian) suddenly felt heavy.
“Use it right.”
Probably not what he meant. Claire swallowed hard and followed her brother out to the garage. “So there’s three joints that’re actually good and reasonably priced in half a mile. Or we could try some shitty, over priced tourist ice cream. Your choice. Either way, I’m getting cookies and cream.”
therealoconner: “Holy shit–did you do that?!”@
@agentclairecarter : continued from here
“Uh… Maybe? In my defense, he did attack me first and he was totally asking for it.”
Not that Brian could expect otherwise from her. If anyone were to push her over they were in a world of hurt. Simple as that. Which wasn’t a bad thing. Even he knew when to back-off and no longer test her patience (most of the time). But Brian has also come to learn and appreciate the strong-willed and independent females in his life. They were much better company than the damsels-in-distress types that littered his teen years. “Um, I’m sure he did. So what did he do exactly to end up in that position?” His curiosity sunk in.
Claire pressed her lips together before leaning up and whispering what the other agent had said to her in his ear. “So before he could say anything else, I, well, yeah.” She rocked back on her heels and gestured at the twitching and bleeding agent. Her knuckles were red and scraped, a bit of blood (likely her own) decorated her brown flesh. “So he didn’t like, hit me or anything, I just didn’t want him to think he could get away with saying stuff like that to me. My sexuality isn’t a fetish and neither is my race and I’m not letting anyone get away with thinking that.” Claire crossed her arms and nodded firmly. “So, wanna go get ice cream?”

@agentclairecarter : continued from here
“Don’t you fucking dare try and say shit,” Claire warned him. “You’ve done this too.” She sucked in another breath of the smoke, hands shaking slightly. “Besides, this is only my first pack.”
Brian pressed his lips together. He didn’t say anything right away. It would be wrong for him to tell her otherwise. To be a hypocrite. Ya know, those typical words of warning: smoking’s bad for you. He’s done it too. Had a bad habit of smoking a lot as a teen and rookie cop. He kicked the habit years ago. But in reality, under very high levels of stress and anxiety, Brian was known to pick up a cigarette or two to calm down. (He does vape too, yes. But not as much as others do) A frown formed on his lips before he drew a breath out. “If I did, wouldn’t it make me a hypocrite? You’re old enough to make your own choices and decisions, Claire.“ He said simply. ”…and first as in ever? Or for today?“ He paused realizing this is the first time he ever saw a cigarette in her hand. Unless he was that naive not to notice in the past. “And don’t tell me you took it up ‘cuz of peer pressure. Or you think it’s cool. I just hope this doesn’t turn into an addictive habit is all.”
“Ever.” Claire swallowed hard as she shifted her weight. “A boy at school offered me one during lunch. I gave him six bucks and took the whole pack after threatening to tell the principal if he didn’t give me the pack.” She took another inhale. It taste disgusting but the nicotine in it hit her system in just the right way that she could relax a little. Her hands were shaking so bad that she finally dropped the cigarette and stomped on it. “I feel like I’m falling apart,” she whispered, knowing that her brother would hear it. “How do I make it stop?”
agentclairecarter:
Claire rolled her eyes at him and punched his shoulder. “Bro, you can barely stand a winter in New York,” she reminded him. “You definitely ain’t gonna last long in Alaska.” Claire would readily admit her status as an utter summer child, but she had lived in New York City her whole life, giving her a full four seasons. Brian had grown up in California however, he hadn’t had four full seasons until recently. She’d reserve the tickets for a cruise next time she had wifi.
~*~
“Are either of you Roman Pierce or Brian O’Conner?” Claire did her level best to look cool and collected. But she was still small and nervous, the fourteen year old so new to this job. “My name is Clarissa Carter, I’m here to offer you a job.”
~*~
“Thank god,” Claire agreed as she gave her brother a fond smile. “I’d’ve been paired with that asshole Johnson if you hadn’t.” And lord knows that would have been a disaster. “I know,” she sighed. “But it’s worth a shot. And at the very least, we’ll alert them to any cops trying to slide under their radar and join them. Hopefully, that’ll curry a little favor towards SHIELD as a whole.” Claire wasn’t sure how that idea would go but you never know unless you try after all.
“Oh my god!” Claire groaned and thumped her head against the headrest. “Must you be such a brother?”
Brian frowned as he felt a tinge of cold race down his spine. The thought of winter weather in NYC made Brian shiver again. He frowned and looked over at her. “But NYC winters are bitter cold. With little to no sun surrounded by a concrete jungle. At least Alaska gives you a better connection to nature. It’ll give us an excuse to shut off the world for awhile, ya know.“ He was definitely a city boy, but that didn’t mean he didn’t love to explore the outdoors. When it didn’t require working on a mission that is. And call it kryptonite or not, an ocean front will always be his weak spot (next to the cars).
-*-
The two men exchanged a look of confusion. But Roman was the first to say something. “Maybe. That depends on who’s asking. And what kind of job? Does it pay good?” Because leave it to Roman to bring up a monetary value in almost any conversation you had with him. He wanted the high class luxury living so let the guy dream about his fantasies.
However, Brian was a little more logical. And even suspicious about her proposition. But even he had a natural tendency of curiosity that he couldn’t pass up either. She somehow knew them by name already so she must have heard something about them. The question is what exactly did she know about them? And how did she obtain it? “What offer?” Brian asked cautiously.
-*-
Brian made a face and shook his head. “Never liked Johnson. Call it a long shot, but every time I see him, he just gives me bad vibes. Like something ain’t right about him.” Johnson and several other agents gave Brian bad vibes though. Like there was some hidden agenda or something that made those agents untrustworthy in Brian’s book. And testing his loyalty was a road not many people wanted to take.
He pressed his lips together and shrugged before reaching over to push her shoulder again. “Yup. Admit it, you’d be lost without the watchful eye of your brothers. So be thankful you haven’t gotten into even crazier shit without me or Roman around.”
“Bro, they don’t get much sunlight either,” she reminded him. “Land of the Midnight Sun and Sunless Winter. I mean, if you really wanna go drown in snow then ok but I’m gonna laugh.” Claire had briefly stopped in Alaska at one point; it hadn’t been very impressive but it hadn’t been awful. Good food though.
~*~
“SHIELD. Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division,” Claire rattled off in one breath. “We want to hire you for your driving abilities. And yes, the pay is good.”
“Your driving skills are exceptional, both of you are easily some of the best drivers around on the street racing scene. SHIELD wants to hire you for that.” Claire followed the script she had been given for just that question. “You’d both be well paid to assist agents in getting out of bad situations with fast driving. Ten agents have died in the past month due to unskilled drivers. Neither of you have gotten into deadly car accidents, we’re hoping that you will not only drive agents, but also teach others how to drive like you.”
~*~
“Lets be real, no one likes Johnson,” Claire remarked. Claire very much disliked Johnson, mostly on principle due to the fact that he disparaged younger agents so much. She personally wanted to drop kick him out the windows a lot.
She rocked with the shove, making a face at him. “Jerk. I’d be just fine! A little lonely, but still alive. Besides, I managed just fine for six months before you came along.”
