Me in 2006: Iβm still bitter about that
Me in 2016: Iβm still salty about that
Me in 2026, probably: Iβm still umami about that
Well, are you?. Weβre waiting.
Thereβs a lot to be umami about these days.

In Ehren des Speak Your Language Days prΓ€sentiere ich das beste Wort der deutschen Sprache:
Doch, although seemingly inconspicuous, is one of the most complicated words the German language has to offer. It is mindboggling how many functions and how many different meanings this little four-letter one-syllable sucker can take on.
Doch as an adverb
In this function, doch can mean anyway, nevertheless, regardless, nonetheless, although, still, yet, though, but, after all.
Sie ist dann doch gekommen. (She came after all.)
Das war spΓ€t,Β dochΒ nicht zu spΓ€t, hoffe ich. (That was late, but not too late, I hope.)
Freundlich, doch bestimmt, verweigerte er der Gruppe den Eintritt. β (Politely but firmly, he denied the group entry.)
Doch as a response particle
In this function, doch expresses a contradiction when answering yes/no questions that contain a negation, affirming the fact negated in the question. This is the amazing function of doch most commonly referred to when mentioning it in a blog post, being the third German response particle besides yes and no.
βDu willst ihn aber nicht heiraten?β β βDoch.β ("But you don't want to marry him?" β "Yes, I do.")
βHast du sie nicht angerufen?β β βDoch!β ("Didn't you call her?" β "Yes!")
"Das hast du wohl nicht gedacht, dass das funktioniert, oder?β β βDoch!β ("You probably didn't think that would work, did you?" β "Oh, yes, I did!")
βEs ist nicht zu spΓ€t, oder?β β βDoch!β ("Itβs not too late, is it?" β "Yes, it is!")
βIst keiner zu Hause?β β βDoch!β ("Is no one home?" β "Yes, there is!")
Doch as a modal particle
Here it becomes even more complicated because in this function, doch can have three distinct meanings thatβdepending on the contextβpartially contradict each other.
1. Doch as an emphasizing or intensifying particle
Firstly, doch may emphasize and intensifyβfor example, a fact, a question, or a request.
Ich wΓΌrde ja gerne kommen, aber ich habe doch eine Verabredung. (Iβd love to come, but unfortunately I already have an appointment.)
Nun ist es aberΒ dochΒ ganz schΓΆn spΓ€t geworden. (It has turned out to be quite late after all.)
Du hastΒ dochΒ gefragt, oder? (But you did ask, didn't you? [said in a slightly exasperated tone])
KommΒ dochΒ mal her, mein Freund! Was ist das hier? (Come here a moment, my friend! What is this? [said in a stern voice])
2. Doch as a softening particle
Secondly, doch may soften the tone and make it friendlierβfor example, turning a command into a wish or a suggestion.
Lieber FrΓΌhling, komm doch bald herbei! (Dear Spring, please come soon!)
BringΒ dochΒ gleich etwas zu trinken mit! (Why not bring something to drink while you're at it? [Side note: the particle gleich is translated as "while you're at it" here, implying that the person talked to has gotten up to fetch something else.])
SchlagΒ dochΒ zu! [ironisch] (Go ahead, take a swing! [ironic])
MachΒ dochΒ was du willst! (Do what you want! [I'm tired of arguing with you.])
3. Doch as a reminder of a known fact
Thirdly, doch can express that what is being stated is known or indisputable. In this sense, it is used almost exclusively in written languageβand only very rarely in colloquial speechβspecifically and obligatorily in causal clauses with verb-first word order.
Er hat sie sehnsΓΌchtig angesehen, liebte er sieΒ doch. (He gazed at her longingly, for he loved her.)
Danach zog sie aufs Land, wollte sieΒ dochΒ dem LΓ€rm der Stadt entkommen. (After that, she moved to the countryside, wanting to escape the noise of the city. [Doch is not translated here; in this piece of literature, it should have been made sufficiently clear beforehand that she loathed city life.])
Ich wΓΌrde ja gerne kommen, aber ich habe doch eine Verabredung. (Iβd love to come, but don't you remember that I already have an appointment.)

i agree with this but i'd probably rephrase the "as a pudgy 47yo woman" because holy hell is that fatphobic. fat people can run marathons, and often do. it could have been literally anything else, "as a person who's never run a mile in their life", for example
I think she was making fun of the AI bros who claim that disabled people use/need AI in order to keep up with the better, able bodied people. Because as we all know, pudgy people can't run marathons and disabled people can't write or draw, those are gatekept by the athletic and artistic people of the world. I am being sarcastic if it isn't clear.

the average runway model should be fat because the point of fashion runways is to show off the clothing, and fat people wear larger sizes, which makes it easier for the audience to see and appreciate the designs. follow me for more blindingly obvious facts of life
How dare you leave this devastating burn in the tags
I just spent an hour making flag alts of the fat liberation flag because I adore it so much. I think I MAY have cooked with the progress flag. like. really hard. hard enough that im posting it full send.
tell me this doesnβt fuck and youβd be wrong.
I actually think all fairies are fat, in their natural habitat. The Irish used iron horseshoes to protect their milk and butter stashes from fairies bc they love cream so much. Cream and berries and honey and ale, all day every day. If you see a skinny fairy she is underfed, give her some sugar water like you would a tired bumblebee π°
Amen π I feel obligated to repost one of my fat fairy designs here bc that other post you rb'ed that prompted this pissed me off SO MUCH
