NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK ELOPEMENT
A dark and moody elopement in the rugged North Cascades National Park, overlooking Diablo Lake
Eliza and Levi
Eloped at North Cascades National Park.
Their ceremony was held on a bluff overlooking Diablo Lake. It is possibly the most stunning scenery in the PNW. There aren't many things better than an intimate elopement among the mountains. We had about 40 minutes of light - dark light, and it was absolutely perfect. Surrounded by their closest family members, Eliza and Levi delivered their devastatingly heartfelt vows to each other to the tune of happy tears and loving support from their witnesses. After the bride and groom made it official and wrapped the ceremony up with a kiss we spent the remainder of the day pulling every last bit of light we could and made moody portraits of the newlyweds.
The beautiful thing about eloping is all the pressure of a wedding is eliminated and you get to focus on what matters most, love. It is stripped down, raw, gritty, messy, and most of all it is true.
Days like these are why we do what we do.

Mount Rainier National Park Wedding
A magical Mount Rainier wedding, with an A-Frame cabin backdrop.
Jessica and Thomas - Mount Rainier National Park
We grew up hiking Mount Rainier as Kids. There is no other place like it in the world. We have a direct view of Mount Rainier from our window, and when the mountain is out, there isn’t anything better than a hot cup of coffee and taking in just how incredible rainier is. I mean we love to travel and get around, but when it comes down to it, there’s no place like home.
We were so excited when Jess Reached out to us about wanting to have her wedding on Rainier. Rainier is a glacier covered active volcano… Does it get anymore magical than that?
We spent the wedding day hanging out with the couple with our cameras ready. Our intention is to always document as life happens, and not only was life happening, Jessica and Thomas we’re bursting with love. They invited their closest friends and family to witness their love, and when you get your best people gathered around in one place, especially a place as beautiful as Rainier, the photos just seem to flow like poetry.

a collection of BW photos
why we love black and white photos the most
Black and white photography has always held a special place in our hearts. We think it’s the most pure version of photography. Stripped down to its essence - light and tone. Right now in the digital age post processing color and tone will go in and out of style, but a black and white is timeless. Our intention is to let the clothing, hairstyles, and surroundings give a sense of an era, not the processing trend of the week. And there is no easier way to accomplish that than with a beautiful BW conversion.
01: Color is easy
Black and white is a challenge. But pursuing strong black and white photos has made us better photographers. Here is a challenge for you. If you shoot raw you can have your images display BW in your camera. When you import them onto your computer to process you’ll see them in color. When you shoot in BW you are seeing shadows, composition, and tone without any distraction of color. This exercise has helped us shoot more dynamically.
02: Your photos will age with grace
Look, we’ve been victims to post production trends. Sometimes we want to go back and reprocess older color photos because they just don’t hold up as we continue to hone our craft. But our BW’s continue to age beautifully.
03: Black and white photos have heart
We love film photography, it’s how we started. BW feels filmic, it just does. There is a sense of nostalgia, heart, and romanticism that goes along with BW photos. It makes us feel something. And we think it makes others feel too. We’ve spent years working on our BW’s because it’s so important to us.
Here is an example of BW working effectively to evoke a sense of timelessness. The video looks like it could have been shoot 50 years ago, but we actually shot it last month. With BW, light is king and when we get down to it as photographers, the better we see the light, the better we are.

the bodaf conference - barcelona
It was January or February of 2012 when I was disembarking my flight from Seattle into Madrid. I didn’t know it then but that trip was about to change my professional career forever. Spain captivated me —the people, the food, and the culture. It all felt so right. I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be in that moment. I was there to speak at Bodaf, a large European wedding photography conference. I met people at this event that are still some of my best friends today, and I was introduced to more photographers that have helped guide me and my career. The experience was truly invaluable to me.
But there is another reason why Spain feels so special to Melanie and I. We had just begun our relationship when I was about to take that trip in 2012 - It was still very new and we were just getting to know one another. We spent that week I was away on FaceTime and it was during this time that our relationship grew into something more serious. So-much-so that Spain felt like the place we needed to marry. We returned to Madrid a year later to elope on a rooftop with our incredible friends we had met though Bodaf. We have since made many trips back to Spain to connect with those friends we made back in 2012; those friends who we now call family.
We are so excited to be returning to speak at this conference that is so special to us. Join us in Barcelona? We can't wait to meet you.
Join us there.

SOU'WESTER LODGE WEDDING
The Sou'Wester Lodge.
Seaview, WA
A beautifully unique trailer park wedding at the Washington Coast.
With Nevin and Mikey and more love than you can handle.
Really there is no way you can put into words exactly what it felt like to be a witness to this love story, and really the photos don't even do it complete justice - but we tried. This is a big post because it was a big day with big love, big family, and big friends - and we were just happy to be a part of it.Â

5 STEPS TO BETTER PHOTOS - FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS
"Because when you’re close you’re going to deliver images that bring your clients right back to those moments in a impactful and intimate way"
01: ACCESS
If you are working with people, access is your biggest obstacle. We know the importance of post production, we are advocates for good post production. Without a good starting point, a good photograph, no amount of post work is going to save you. It’s important to put in effort before your shoot so you have success during your shoot. Part of the work is good access. We always say that photographing a wedding or a couple is an intimate thing and there is no better way to show a connection than to be close. Let your clients know you want to shoot from the inside out, not the outside in, and let them know you need to be invited into their space. Because when you’re close you’re going to deliver images that bring your clients right back to those moments in a impactful and intimate way. We’d guess some of the best photographers in the world are the best because they get the best access, not because they are the best with their cameras.
02: LIGHT IS KING
Photographers love a good location. A good location is dynamic and inspiring. But let us tell you something. Look for the light first and location second. No matter how dynamic a location is, there is absolutely no substitute for good light. The most important elements in a photo are as follows. Light, composition, concept, moment. If you get three out of four of these, you’ve got something. If you get all four, you have something special.
03: KEEP AN OPEN MIND
It is great to go into a shoot with a plan, you should always plan. But here is the thing, often as photographers our plans get blown up for one reason or another. It is so important to stay positive and be adaptable. Because guess what? Sometimes a change of plan will force you into an unexpected situation that turns out to be better than anything you could have planned. The important thing is that we stay ready and we embrace the change. Stay positive because we just might be surprised.
04: PLAY
We’re going to wager a guess here. You got into photography because you like it, right? Then this should be easy. Play! Have fun, experiment. Be yourself. And the most important part of this, photograph what you are drawn to. If you do that, your photos will be better just because you’re enjoying what you’re doing.
05: DON’T HESITATE
There is absolutely zero room for hesitation in photography. The moment you take the viewfinder away from your eye, you’ve lost. Moments are fleeting and if you’re not ready, or you’re unsure, you’re going to miss it. On the other hand, be relentless in your pursuit of good images. Think about it this way. Athletes train everyday. Because if they don’t, somebody is going to outwork them. The same goes for photography, we have to flex our photographic muscles. Shoot photos everyday. We don’t get success by trying a little bit, we have to go all in.
Take these five steps we covered and apply them to your pre-production workflow, you’re going to have more successful shoots. It is all about the work leading up to the photo that makes the shoot successful.
