Staff Pick of the Week
I’m indulging my SFF fandom for this week’s staff pick and presenting some covers from our collection of Fantastic, a digest-sized fantasy and science fiction magazine published by Ziff-Davis that ran from 1952 until 1980. Ziff-Davis was originally headquartered in Chicago, later New York, and primarily published hobbyist magazines like Popular Aviation and Popular Electronics. In 1938 the publishing firm acquired the popular science fiction pulp Amazing Stories from creator Hugo Gernsback (after whom the Hugo Award is named). Initially intended as a fantasy companion to Amazing Stories, declining sales forced Fantastic to also shift their focus to science fiction.
Our earliest copy, from April of 1955, shows no remnants of the magazines fantasy origins and emphasized the switch with a cover title reading Fantastic Science Fiction. For the first half of the sixties, the magazine rebranded as Fantastic Stories of Imagination. After 1965, the magazine appeared inconsistently as Fantastic Stories, Fantastic Science Fiction & Fantasy, and briefly for 11 issues in the late seventies, as Fantastic Stories Sword & Sorcery and Fantasy (what a mouthful!). Fantastic never reached the popularity or circulation of Amazing Stories, and in 1980 Fantastic was shuttered and its operations merged with Amazing Stories.

Despite publishing many fine stories, the paper shortages of the Second World War and the magazine’s low profit margins eventually led to the cancelation of UNKNOWN following the issue dated October 1943.
