Some people have been asking me how I create the animations I post. I usually start the images under the camera, using variations of an animation technique known as liquid light painting. Later, I take the images I capture and I bring them into After Effects. From there is a sort of collaging process where I mix motions, change scale, colors and speed. I made this animation as part of my thesis project, Circles of Care, an interactive visual music piece. While I was trying to find a visual language for my thesis, I tried a lot of approaches using fully digital tools. None of them felt right. Before coming to Grad School the only animation tool I had was an under-the-camera setup, where I would do all my animations in a flawd, out of control, but very meditative state. After a few months of unsuccessful tests and near the point of exhaustion, right before going into winter break, I decided to go back to the Oxberry at school, just to relax and try to find again that playful joy that brought me into animation. So, the last 5 weeks I've spent a lot of time on airplanes, and sometimes just out of boringness, sometimes out of wonder I take photos. This one(or these ones) are the photos I took looking though the window. From L.A. to Portland, to Frankfurt, to Zagreb and the way back through Minneapolis and to Bogotá and Barranquilla too and everything in between.
