Watch Jameson Wilkins’s Nifty Niche Contest Winner Gamejam! on Livestream.com.
ITS LIVE FOLKS! Get on in here and listen to my awkward voice say goofy things while I make a game about a Goblin with management issues! Stream should be going on most of today, July 28th 2013, so don’t hesitate to stop by, and please reblog as well!
And hey, who knows, I might be asking for suggestions from the audience!
I’ve been drawin’ some spaceships for that color matching/endless runner/shmup thingy I’ve been working on. I’ve been inspired by the awesome guys at Vlambeer and theire game Ridiculous Fishing to actually finish this title. I like how it’s coming along and I want to polish it to a fine sheen, because with any luck it’s the first game I want to actually charge for!
ALSO DONT FORGET! The Nifty Niche “Star in your own game or a pixel portrait" contest is ending THIS SATURDAY! Reblog that post while you still can folks!
- ROSE THORN -
This shirt print is going to have a wrap around design that twirls her hair and thorns luxuriously around your neck. The thorns and rose will be printed in shiny metallic foil.
Prints available here
Follow on Facebook for updates on when the shirt will be available.

SO HERE’S THE DEAL.
I’d like some more more followers, cuz I got a lot of stuff coming on down the line, but I get that I don’t just deserve your attention, I need to give you back something in return (that isn’t awesome free games like A Nation of Wind). So that’s what this contest is all about.
LETS TALK ABOUT PRIZES.
First place is…you guessed it, a simple arcade game starring YOU. Or someone of your choosing (significant other, family member, avatar, OC, etc.) I’m not entirely %100 certain what the game will be beyond an arcade title, but I’m hoping you (the winner) can help me out with that!
Second and third place each get a pixel portrait! This is something I’ve done in the past for charity work, you can see some examples in the images above. Basic idea is you (or person of your choosing) mashed together with a video game character type of your choice. Like a caricature, but with pixel art!
“But Nifty Niche!”, you say “How can I partake in this amazing contest?”
I’m glad you asked! There are only 2 requirements. The first is that you need to reblog the very post you are reading right now! Then start following the Nifty Niche Blog! It’s that simple!
The deadline for this contest is July 13th! I’ll be reminding you folks as we near it, but enter early so you don’t forget! Remember, just reblog this post and follow the Nifty Niche tumblr and you could star in your very own video game!
For those of you that still haven’t started following my Game Dev blog, here’s some added incentive!
One last gifset for today! These aren’t from Candy Cauldron, but from the new shooter/puzzle game I’ve been working on in my free time.Â
Four more Candy Cauldron gifs! This time we have three enemies and a potion, with legs!
The idea was that potions would pop out of Candice’s cauldron and run over to her pet slime, then splash themselves on it, I really liked the idea of the potions being characters themselves, reminded me a lot of the brooms in the Sorcerers Apprentice (The Mickey short, not the Nic Cage flick.)
Another gifset from my Nifty Niche Blog! Check it out if you like indie games!
It’s been awhile eh? Even though Candy Cauldron has been scrapped, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love the art I did for it. Candice was a lot of fun to animate!
Follow Nifty Niche for more indie-game devving goodness!

-Background-
In the summer of 2010, I took a break from the post-graduation desperate job-hunt to do some “just for me” pixel art. I had no idea that the then bright blue airship and handful of isometric environmental tiles I spent an afternoon drawing would ultimately become my first...
I’ll take a moment to explain what the edutainment title I am being commissioned to develop is about, since I haven’t yet done that!
In the 1800’s, Havana Cuba’s fisheries were basically depleted. However, the Florida Bay’s fisheries were densely populated, which resulted in a migrant fishermen population that would travel from Havana to the bay area and back again between Hurricane seasons. These fishermen were called Ranchos.
The journey usually took less than 48 hours, and upon arrival they would set up small communities that would house and feed the fishermen as well as their families. They primarily fished using seine nets, which are essentially long nets spread between two poles and weighted at the bottom. Fish would get caught in these nets and the fishermen would go out and collect them. They would then dry them, and salt them in some cases. They lived on these fish as well as local fruits and vegetables they would grow, and upon returning to Havana they would sell the dried/salted fish.
These ranchos actually existed well into the late 1800’s, but many were lost when the US gained control of Florida from Spain, and refused to honor the land claims these ranchos held over the area.
The screenshots I have been posting are of the settlement portion of the game, though there is a sailing aspect to the game that will play similar to the Oregon Trail.Â
Not enough enemies on screen yet I think.
For those of you who haven’t seen any of the work I’ve been doing on the side for this particular project, allow me to introduce you to Candy Cauldron! You play a witch with candy magic, turning your foes into various cooking ingredients you then use to brew potions to power up your pet slime. It’s still VERRRRRY early on in its development cycle, but that’s because the edutainment game takes precedence!
Still, my tentative schedule for work on this devblog is to dedicate weekdays to the Edutainment game, and weekends to Candy Cauldron and other projects. Candy Cauldron is a bit of a big deal for me because I plan on actually selling it, or releasing it for free but funding it with kickstarter. Not really sure yet. We’ll see!
I’ve also got another much smaller project that I will be speaking with a studio gallery about next week. Should be interesting, and I’ll keep you all informed on it!
Just a reminder by reblogging from the new blog folks! Nifty Niche will now cover all my indie development projects, not just ANoW!
Welcome to the official development blog of Nifty Niche Games!
What’s Nifty Niche you ask? It’s an independent gaming studio that currently represents all the work being done by yours truly, Jameson Wilkins, developer of “A Nation of Wind”. Here you will be able to keep up with all facets of development for the various projects that I work on, be it freelance, educational, or whatever!
Hey guys, I just set up the devblog for my new development label! Follow if you want to see more awesome games like Adventure Time Attack of the Fightosphere!
