hey, wait a minuteâ
âcap?â a quick look was all it took for him to realize that the man clearly remembered nothing of him. no flash of recognition, nothing. zip. nada.
âsteve rogers, right?â he said, turning to face him more fully. âlet me guess, canât remember a thing before your arrival on this island?â
shit, that stung a little. he and cap had had their ups and down throughout the ages (and it sure as hell had felt like ages), but theyâd been a solid team by the end. at least, by tonyâs end. seeing the lack of recognition felt like a punch to the gut. âitâs tony,â he said quietly, maybe a little desperately.
Guess today was a day for unusual questions. An awkward laugh escaped him before he spoke again. âNot a thing, which Iâm perfectly fine with. I donât need to have a memory of the day I was born. Iâm sure if my mom were here, sheâd say the same thing.â She had a habit of joking that he was a stubborn one from the very beginning so he had a pretty good idea of what that day was like already. Stepping inside the building for a moment to shake the manâs hand in greeting, he added, âWell, itâs good to meet you, Tony. If I happen upon the person this belongs to, Iâll make sure to let âem know itâs ready.â
