Adrina was born and raised in The Bronx to parents Nadia and Adrian Alameda. Nadia, an ex-housekeeper from Barranquitas, Puerto Rico is now a part-time home-baker, selling freshly baked goods to people from their townhome, particularly Puerto Rican sweets like Pan de Mallorca and Arroz con Dulce around Christmas (with Coquito, of course). Her father, who was originally from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, was a Marine Biologist in his early years and by the time Adrina reached fifteen, he became a professor for Marine Biology at Lehman College in the Bronx.
At 10, Adrina met Lucas, a tall and lanky kid for as long as she could remember and it seemed he was really the only one in the whole world that understood her, through puberty, through her teenage years when they attended high school together. Unfortunately at age 17, Lucasâ family decided on making a move back to their native U.K. and that was the last time Adrina would see Lucas.
This hit Adrina really hard, as growing up, she wasnât the most extroverted and making friends was always a difficult task as she was always either too sensitive or too exacting - traits, that when she entered university, she decided on quelling, though the former seemed to have stuck (much to her chagrin).
CANCER + DEATH TW. During Adrinaâs last year in college, her father was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. Unfortunately, he didnât make it to see her graduate, passing just four months prior and it was the most heartbreaking thing she and her mother had ever gone through.
DEPRESSION TW. After graduation and due to her depression, Adrina picked up a job as a cashier at Whole Foods, her dream of entering the culinary industry having completely dropped away after the death of her father. It was at Whole Foods that she met Jake, a lawyer and an all around charmer. He was so charming that six months later, they were exclusive and two years after that, they were married. Adrina was 23.
Little by little, day by day, Adrina found herself falling in love with cooking again. She had once again found her passion for cuisine and as much as she wanted Jake to support the dream she had about owning her own restaurant, it was passive ridiculing that she received instead. And little by little, day by day, Adrina found herself falling more and more out of love with Jake; if she could even call it that, infatuation may have been more like it. He wasnât the most exciting, wasnât the most supportive nor the easiest to get along with - but he was...there.
INFIDELITY TW. It was later that Adrina met Diego and for Adrina, she couldâve sworn it was love at first sight - true love - and the way Diego made Adrina feel was nothing like the way Jake had ever made her feel. They spent the remainder of the festival a little closer than she shouldâve allowed, until it came time that she had to confess her situation - she was married. But unwilling to let what she had found with Diego go, the two had an affair until December of that same year.
DEATH TW. The guilt of the affair ate at Adrina since she and Diego began seeing one another and when she began contemplating leaving Jake, news surfaced that his father had passed. Knowing all too well what it felt like to lose a father, the guilt of adding even more heartbreak onto Jakeâs shoulders ate her up and so, heartbroken and regretfully, she ended the affair with Diego, choosing to stay with Jake instead and be his support. But time would come to prove that though Jake suffered, she couldnât stay with a man that demeaned her and her dreams and so tired of his contempt - particularly after Adrina had relayed the news that an investor wanted to help her own her own restaurant - she filed for divorce in the beginning of July, 2021, a divorce thatâs still in the works at Jake wanting to work things out instead and Adrina, refusing every time.
Adrina now works at her restaurant Mar (Spanish for âseaâ, in reference to her late fatherâs love of the ocean), mostly as the owner, doing paperwork and the like, the restaurant being the place where she spends most of her time. There, the local Starbucks and her motherâs house.
