the noise fades,

the distractions disappear,

and suddenly every thought you have been avoiding

perhaps loving someone for too long

turns you into a spectator

of your own heartbreak.

and still—

you remain beside them,

quietly, faithfully,

surviving on fragments of their attention

as though devotion alone

“oh my clematis” still echoes softly through the stage

even as everything begins to come apart.

the smile remains for a moment longer,

their eyes still find each other beneath the lights

as though the world has not already chosen

what it intends to destroy.

perhaps holiness was invented

for moments like these—

when the world becomes too strange

to endure without believing

someone, somewhere,

still has power over it.

for faith becomes far easier

when one is frightened enough.

and perhaps devotion is simply

trying desperately to believe

the world is still governed

perhaps it was never a question of whether you were truly him.

the dead do not return unchanged,

and grief will take mercy wherever it is offered.

so we walked beneath that dying light

as though nothing sacred had already been broken between us.

as though companionship, even borrowed and monstrous,

was still better

it may well be that you are not him.

I have known it, in quieter hours.

and yet—

you remain,

and that has proven kinder

nothing feels different.

you wake up, you move, you follow the same steps—

just a small sense

that you’ve done this before

you think you’d know

if something was wrong.

not all at once —

but in the way it sits with you a second too long,

like a feeling that doesn’t leave

The world is still cold to the touch,

still wrapped in yesterday’s weather,

and yet these flowers bloom

as if they know

Some returns are not mercies.

Some light is only

Even the water carries memory it cannot release.

It moves in circles, but some pieces are gone forever.

A fountain remembers every drop it ever held,

every drop recalls a summer that never came back.

Even sparkling water can ache.

The color of a thought you almost forgot.

Unwilling to be named.
