Super cool website alert
lingvo.info is a cool, free website all about European languages & linguistics in general.
There are four main sections to the website:
Lingvopedia for basic information about the 28 languages in Europe they focus on, like alphabet, history, phonetics, basic grammar, fun tongue twisters and sayings, etc.
Babylon for info on linguistic in general (as a prototumblinguist with barely any formal studies on linguistics, Iâm eating this up)
Lingvopolis, which is like a searchable tumblr masterpost for language learning resources on the web
Geolingvo, which is a game you can play with some tumblr nerds all about langs and geography
There is also a section to download language lesson plans for teaching a couple languages!
I saw one of the people who develops this website at the Polyglot Gethering, and their team is working hard on it! Itâs super, super cool, and I wish we could have a clone site for all the languages.
Itâs also multilingual, so you can change the site language from English to 21 other languages.
So I took a look, hoping this could give me information about and to learn a language Iâve been wanting to learn for a while and just⌠you guys know Welsh is a language right? Like, Wales, the country attached to England, has itâs own language. Scotland too! (And if you can put that Ireland have their own language then you have no excuse for not putting Welsh and Scottish).
Big disappointment.
They do have resources for Welsh listed in Lingvopolis!Â
I went to a talk by one of the developers of this website. They are based in Slovakia and get limited funding to develop this website in addition to many others like lernu.net for Esperanto, deutsch.info for German and slovak.eu for Slovak. Their team is multilingual, but of course not proficient in all languages, so they have to rely on volunteers from other countries to develop quality content for each language. Thatâs why they canât quite get all the languages they would want to have on the site! If you know any Welsh speaker that would be interested in working with them long-term, Iâm sure theyâd be interested in hearing from that person. Though, this isnât their main job, so the different sites they run are at different spots on the priority list. Theyâre also developing a site for Russian!
The best thing about all these sites are - theyâre free!
18 Wonderful literary devices to make wonderful essays
Allegory: When a great, often abstract concept is conveyed through a more corporal idea. I.e. Story with a deeper meaning (E.g. Orwellâs Animal Farm/Communism)
Allusion: Author refers to place, event or work by a way of passing reference.
Amplification: Writer embellishes sentence by adding more information to increase its worth and understandability
Analogy: Relationship based on similarities between two concepts.
Anthropomorphism: Giving human quality to an animal
Archetype: Reference to a specific concept or person or object that is immediately identifiable.

How to make the best lecture notes of all time
Sometimes you leave a lecture with the impression that very few of the important points raised in class have ended up in your notes. Weâve all been there. Follow this nifty guide and make awesome notes every classâŚ
PREPARE FOR CLASS
Dull and predictable as this piece of advice is, if you prepare for a class, youâll get more out of it. Before the lecture, do the required readings and quickly scan the notes you made in the last class. This will provide a context for the new material youâll be learning and means you can focus your note-taking energies on subject areas you are not already familiar with. Why would you want to make lecture notes about material thatâs in the textbook?
ORGANISING YOUR NOTES
Date all your notes, give each lecture a topic title, and use subtitles where necessary. Avoid writing your notes on scraps of paper: write all your notes in the one notebook, or save all typed notes to the one folder on your laptop. This will help you to find what youâre looking for in a hurry.
WHAT TO USE
In lectures some people prefer to type their notes, others write them out by hand. Find a system that works for you and keep it consistent.
For me, the process of physically writing out my notes helps me to be more selective about which pieces of information I record, and helps me to better focus on the information presented. Plus the temptation of Facebook when Iâm working on a laptop is just too great. Iâve also found that using a Dictaphone or other recording device isnât the best idea, as it makes you lazy in lectures and means youâre more likely to tune out.
If you do write your notes out by hand, consider using coloured pens (not blue or black) as it can help you to retain more information first go. Using a different colour pen for key points makes them stand out in your mind.
WHAT TO WRITE DOWN
Be selective. You donât need to write down everything the lecturer says, and your notes shouldnât be a transcript of the class. Donât write a sentence if a few words will suffice.
Limit your lecture note taking to material that you donât already know (because youâve done your readings before class, this means your notes will probably be quite short). Listen closely and consider whether the information is relevant to the course and the assessments.
In an information-packed lecture, it can be hard to know what information is important. Look out for:
Emphasis â youâll pick this up from the time your lecturer devotes to a particular point, the way your lecturer says something, or the body language they use when saying it.
Repetition â it they say something several times, itâs probably because they want you to learn it.
Definitions
Things written on the whiteboard/ blackboard
Debates â Does your lecturer go into the reasoning behind the majority and minority judgments? The case is probably an important authority.
CREATE YOUR OWN ABBREVIATIONS
Using abbreviations will help you to take notes more efficiently. Use abbreviations that mean something to you and keep it consistent. Here are some of my frequently used abbreviations:
HCA Â Â Â Â High Court of Australia
SC Â Â Â Â Â Supreme Court
ct       Court
P Â Â Â Â Â Â Plaintiff
D Â Â Â Â Â Â Defendant
judg       Judgment
apl      Appeal
maj        Majority
min        Minority
SOME HANDY HINTS
Writing the information in your own words, rather than copying the lecturerâs wording will help you to grasp and retain the information.
Use dot points, indents and numbering to make the hierarchical relationship between different points clearer.
Spread your notes out â leaving space makes your notes easier to scan, and itâs helpful if your lecturer has a tendency to jump around.
If the lecturer has moved onto a new point and you havenât gotten something down, just leave a few question marks next to the incomplete thought and fill in the gaps with a friend after class.
CONSIDER COLUMNS
Another option for making your notes more study-friendly, is dividing the pages of your notebook into columns. Here are the two best column strategies:
Divide the page into two columns. The right one should take up about two thirds of the page, and the left column one third. Write your main lecture notes in the right column, and put keywords or topic headings in the left hand column. This makes it easier to find important information when youâre going through your notes later.
Divide the page into two columns of equal width. Write points from your readings in the left column, and related points from your lecture in the right column. If youâve ever struggled with integrating your readings and your lecture notes, this is the strategy for you.
HAVE AN AFTER CLASS ROUTINE
Type your notes up within 24 hours of the lecture. Turn key words and dot points into full sentences, and translate those abbreviations before you forget what they mean. Some studies have shown that if you revise the information within 24 hours of first hearing it, youâll remember about 80% of it. Such a simple routine could make exam time a whole lot easier.

TIPS & TRICKS
Studying in a blue room relaxes your mood and makes you more productive, which is great for finishing up assignments and homework.
Spray an unfamiliar scent, and chew an unfamiliar flavour of gum while youâre having a study session.Â
Before you start your exam, write down the things you think you might need while theyâre still fresh in your head at the top of the page such as formulas and vocabulary words.Â
âTimes New Romanâ is the easiest and fastest font to read.
When writing an essay, add the opposing point of view to make the read look at both sides.Â
When youâre taking notes, pretend youâre writing them for some else, preferably someone you care about, and imagine them not knowing anything when it comes to the class youâre writing notes in.
Using colours when writing your notes helps you remember faster, avoid using only one colour as it might dull out important information.Â
Change your font from 12pt to 14pt when writing essays, it looks the same but increases the number of pages by 1-2.
Cinnamon flavoured gum helps you stay awake, use it for your morning classes.Â
Speaking something out loud helps your remember, so always read your notes aloud when youâre studying.
Reading the first and last paragraphs and only running over the middle has the same outcome as reading all of it.
Chocolate has the ability to improve your math skills.Â
Always have an alternative email, you never know when it might come in handy.
Cold showers over coffee anyway. It keeps you fresh the entire day, and also helps you stay focused and less tired throughout the day.
Reward yourself with 15-20 minutes of free time with every 45 minutes of studying.Â
If youâre pulling an all nighter, sleeping the 20 minutes before the sun comes up helps your body relax and youâll be less tired.Â
Replace the colour tube of your red pen with the blue one. No one steals a red pen, and no one wants it.
Always say yes to extra credit, no matter what your grade is. It can make a huge different seeing as it has the ability to change one percent which can change an entire grade letter.Â
ALWAYS DATE YOUR NOTES // ASSIGNMENTS.Â
Writing something down is an equivalent of saying something 7 times.Â
No matter how much time you have left, do it earlier. Youâll be glad you did.
Be friends with your teachers, you never know what can happen during the school year.
Have a study group, youâll have friends to explain things to you and vide versa, also you can share notes and finish up homework without feeling like time is passing by slow.
And now an inspiring quote said by my biology teacher to one of my friends who wouldnât stop looking at the clock, âThe time will pass, but you might not pass this class.â

The "Secret" To Doing Well in School:
Start on day one and donât stop until youâre done.
As much as you will want to go hang out with your friends the second you get out of class on the first day, resist it. Head to the library, your room, or wherever else it is you get work done and just do it. On the first day you will have such little work to do that it will seem too insignificant to start right away. However, this helps set up the rest of the semester for you. If you can get in the habit of this before the work load gets daunting then procrastination will no longer be an issue. Sit down after your classes and finish all your work (or make a plan on how to finish it) before you relax. Simple as that. Do that and cramming will no longer be your life. If you think thatâs too overwhelming, try challenging yourself to do that for 30 days. After the 30 days it will become a habit!
But maybe youâre of the opinion that procrastination is fine and that you do pretty well regardless. Thatâs fine. But think of how much easier studying would be if you didnât procrastinate. By the end of week one you would have all of week oneâs material down pat. You would have the opportunity to quickly review in the coming weeks instead of still struggling to learn it all. Then come the weekend before the test you will simply be reinforcing what you already know instead of struggling to have complete knowledge of what youâll be tested on.
Boom. That A is easily within reach.
The culture behind procrastination unfortunately only ends up feeding the habit. The idea that procrastination is just a thing that everyone does and jokes around about is the worst part. Well, itâs time to take it seriously! There actually is no secret to doing well in school! You already know what you need to do. So start doing it!
Iâd like to add that although the goal here is to minimize procrastination, procrastination is something everyone deals with to some extent. Instead of trying to fruitlessly eliminate it, minimize it as much as possible and learn coping strategies to handle occasional procrastination. Procrastination, in moderation, can be healthy. But for a lot of people procrastination is not in moderation. Consider that.
I love this library.
Good luck to everyone studying for finals/exams! âď¸
I like to have white or ambient noise playing while I study, so I thought Iâd share a list of my favourite websites in case anyone else was interested.
Rainymood - Allows you to play rain, with suggestions of ambient music to play at the same time. Has an iOS and Android app, my personal favourite.
Calm - A visually beautiful website. Provides moving backgrounds and an option for guided calm which allows you to immerse yourself in the music and to relax. Has a free app for iPhone. Another one of my favourites.
Showertime - The experience of taking a shower without the water. Allows you to control features such as length of shower, size of room, water pressure, etc.
Coffitivity - The background noise of a coffee shop. Allows you to choose between different locations such as lunchtime lounge, morning murmur etc. Has an app for iOS and Android as well as a desktop app for OS X.
Soundrown - A website with a sleek minimalist design, allows you to choose between rain, coffee shop, ocean, fire, bird noises, or a combination of the five.
Relaxing Snow - Visually beautiful falling snow, the website gives you the opinion to play music with the scenery, or to choose your own.
Raining.Fm - This website gives you the ability to adjust the rain to exactly how youâd like it, with options to tweak thunder, rain and storm noises. Has an app for iOS and Android, as well as a timer and snooze option.
Rain For Me - Simple rain effects with the option to download the audio files for offline listening.
Snowy Mood - Inspired by Rainy Mood, this website really makes you feel like itâs winter. Perfect for playing while snuggled up in a warm bed.
Rainy Cafe - Combines the sounds of a bustling cafe setting with the sounds of drizzling rain. Allows you to select the volume of each setting, or turn one off completely.

A faster way to start learning a language
You can get to the point where you can express yourself in a language by learning basic grammar and just 300 words. (Note: this guide originally included 200 words, but I added some more in order to cover a wider range of situations.)
My test for being able to express myself is: Can I keep a diary in this language? Can I talk about what I did today and my opinions on just about any subject?
Too often, people who have been learning a language for months or even years say âno.â However, in my experience, itâs possible after learning just basic grammar and the 300 most useful words. Memrise predicts that learning the 300 words in Spanish will take 6 hours of work. Adding in the time to learn basic grammar, the total time could be a few weeks to a month. (If you try out this method, Iâd love to hear how long you find it takes.)
The key is that you have to learn the right 300 words. When I was teaching myself languages before, I could never find a good answer to the question: What words should I learn first? If you use Duolingo, theyâll start by teaching you words like âappleâ, which arenât very useful. I spent a lot of time writing and talking in order to determine which 300 words would let you express the most. I think I finally got it. But donât take my word for it â see this demonstration.
I personally tested this method out with Esperanto and French and Iâm now able to keep a diary in both languages, writing about anything that happened in my day and any thought that crosses my mind.
To be clear: 300 words wonât make you fluent, but theyâll allow you to express yourself, and itâs a lot easier to keep improving from there. Feel free to adapt the method based on what works for you. Here are the steps:
If your language uses a non-Latin alphabet, learn the alphabet.
Learn basic grammar
Learn ~300 basic words
Practice writing (This method is introvert friendly! You donât have to talk to strangers if you donât want to. But at this stage you can also practice by speaking, if you prefer.)
Iâve made a Memrise course based on this guide for Spanish! Please fill out this quick survey to let me know if youâre interested in Memrise courses and for what languages.
If you run into any difficulties or if I can help you in any way, please let me know. Also, please send me your feedback! Iâd love to know if this works for you or if it doesnât. I welcome all comments, criticism, and suggestions for improvement. And if you think this guide could help other people, please consider reblogging it. :)
Additional notes:
To be able to express yourself with 300 words, youâll need to be able to rephrase things: e.g. âyou comforted meâ = âyou made me feel betterâ. Even if itâs hard for you to rephrase things this way, the 300 basic words are a great starting vocabulary list.
This is the order in which I usually learn an alphabetic language: basic writing and speaking, reading, listening, advanced writing and speaking. Being able to express yourself doesnât mean that youâll immediately be able to listen to the language and understand it, because native speakers may speak fast and use a wider vocabulary (though hopefully theyâll slow down and simplify for you in a conversation). But itâs a lot easier to keep improving from a point where you have basic writing and speaking skills than from one where you donât.
Hi, I'm starting my new timetable/year in school on Monday and I want to go into it organised and have everything I need to to keep on top of my work/homework/studies even if it is for a month before the summer break and I was wondering if you have any help/tips/recommendations on being organised for classes and studying/stationery essentials??
Hi, first of all, so sorry this reply is too late.. Itâs already Monday in some parts of the world even.. Anyway, to answer your question: our studytips tag is there for good habits to keep to study, while our lifestyle tag is a good source for resources you can keep help you study.
Just the stuff I do to keep my studying in track is
1) keeping a bullet journal. We do have a bullet journal tag but itâs limited, and itâs better if you just google or tumblr search bullet journals⌠Itâs a nifty and simple way of keeping track of the semester, what you need to go over each day
2) constant revising is key!! After class, go over notes for the classss you had for the day. If you donât have enough Time, just reading over them is enough too. Go over questions for subjects like math and physics. Memorize the key words you learned today. Go over concepts. Just make sure you review in whatever way and donât let the info just go over your head. I like to re-do my condensed notes into Evernote so I can just look over them on my tablet on the go. Flash cards are a good alternative
3) form study groups!! Get with bunch of friends to go over the material together.. Quiz each other, trade notes. Itâs ESP much better to do the hard stuff with your friends..
This isnât much, I honestly think our lifestyle tag would be much more of a help to you.. Good luck!! Hope you have a great semester
