Monday 11th April.

I returned in today ready to work settled after what happened the previous week. I asked Russell if there were any tasks that I could do. There was nothing he could think of at the moment as he had only returned from being absent all last week. However, he would inform me if there were any tasks I could do.

For the rest of the day. I had no tasks set. There was nothing for me to do other that update my report, journals and personal portfolio.

Monday 4th April. 

Upon returning back to placement at BigWetFish after the Easter week, I was informed that Russell and Ben were not in and would also not be in the other days I was in, this meant that the advert wouldn’t be filmed this week. Among that, the weather had not been the best for the past couple of weeks, meaning that the drone couldn’t be used to film the advert. With that news, I had nothing productive to do other that work on my own portfolio of work.

However, I had also learnt about some major changes to the Kobault Studio Website and their branding. The logos I had created were not being used and a new one had taken its place. The animated intro had been replacement by a different created by another fellow student. Confused by this, I started to question the change.

I then found out by the other student about the changes. The reason why the logos I created didn't get used was because of the new layout of the website. It turned out the whole office liked how the text looked and this all happened when I was absent the week prior. The animated intro was replaced because I learnt that Russell was disappointed with the one I created.

I apologise for letting him down for not making something more unique. But in the end, the task given to me that day was to:

Wednesday 23rd March.

I was giving the chance to provide my animation and video skills to create a ‘simple’ animated intro for Kobault Studio. It would be possible that this animated intro might be played before the video promoting the North Coast and their attractions.

For the animated intro, Russell wanted it simple, just for the name ‘Kobault Studio’ to fade in from the side, stay on screen for 2 seconds and then fade out. I mentioned if he wanted a solid background that would display the colour scheme for Kobault. He approved of the idea and I then got to work.

Below is a screenshot process of how I created the animated intro in Adobe After Effects:

Starting a new After Effects project requires starting a new composition. I adjusted the settings so that the composition was at 1080p HD at 25fps.

I then changed the font type so that it was the decided font type used for the business, ‘Foxes in Love.’

For the fade in effect at the beginning, I decided to use the ‘Wipe in to Center’ Effect. This effect allows the text to fade in from both left and right and would end in the middle.

Adjusting the timing of when the text fades in on the timeline. I would then copy the same keyframes and reverse the effect so that it would fade out from the center.

 As it looked too basic, I wanted to give it more of a dynamic look.

I created a new composition with the same settings as the first one, naming the composition ‘Final.’ I would then add the first composition onto the new one.

Once that was done, I then went to Layer>New>Camera.

I adjusted the camera settings so that it was a two-node camera. This was so I could create a ‘3D fly-in’ effect to the Kobault Studio text composition.

After linking the camera to the text composition layer, I adjusted the transform settings in the camera to create the effect.

Monday 21st March.

The task set for me today was to research information for installing a two-axis brushless gimbal dji phantom 2 vision on Russell’s drone so that we could start filming the advert sometime in the upcoming weeks.

I retrieved information from the website below:

The section below is the 20-step instructions I obtained for Russell for the camera installation:

 1. Connect the P2V to the assistant software via micro USB cable (provided by DJI with your P2V).

2. Under the "Advanced" heading, in the "Gimbal" tab, enter "0" into the "Pitch: Gain" box, then press enter.

3. In the "Servo Travel Limit" section, enter "-450" into the "Pitch: Center" box, then press enter.

4. Disconnect the P2V from the computer, and turn off power.

5. Detach the lower vibration damping plate (with camera connected) from the 4 vibration damping balls.

6. Disconnect the pitch control cable coming from the underside of the P2V.

7. Pull away the small rubber insert on one of the "ears" of the FC200 camera.

8. Unscrew and remove the single Phillips screw.

9. Remove the small hard plastic servo transmission block from the inside of the “ear”.

10. Carefully remove the camera.

11. Install the camera in the Rotorpixel FC200 camera mount.

12. Insert the small white spacer into one of the "ears" of the camera.

13. Install and tighten the black thumbscrew into the ear, through the spacer.

14. Connect the pitch control cable from the underside of the P2V to the single free cable coming from the gimbal control board.

15. Connect the lower section of each white damping ball to the metal vibration isolation plate.

16. Insert the black rubber nuts into the top hole of each vibration damping ball (use an allen key provided, as an insertion tool, if necessary)

17. Insert white thumbscrews, and screw in 6-8 revolutions, ensuring that the metal damping plate is seated against the white thumbscrew. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.

18. Plug in the standard white cable coming from the P2V into the mating receptacle on the gimbal control board.

19. Plug in the thin white cable coming from the gimbal control board, into the back of the FC200 camera, ensuring that it is inserted all the way, and in an orientation that sends the cable upward and slightly to the left (from the camera's perspective).

20. Keep the gimbal motionless for at least 5 seconds after turning on the P2V.

Monday 14th March.

This week, Me and Russell revisited the Kobault Logo concepts I created. When creating these logos, I used these font types:

-          Toledo Regular

-          Brandish Regular

-          Tempus Sans ITC

Note: The ones marked with * were the ones that Russell liked and thought they fitted with the layout.

Russell then suggested creating one more section of Kobault Studio logos using a decided font type by Himself, Dylan and Phil. This font type was entitled ‘Foxes in Love’ and was available to download from DaFont.com.

Once this was complete, I was then assigned with the following tasks (Each task shows a screenshot showing the overall result:

 The image below shows the final drafts of the Kobault Studio Business card I created using different layouts.

I decided to add a pattern to the bottom right hand side of the business, to help fill some of the white space.

This was a possible pattern colour that could be used for the business card: # 62353a.

I experimented using different shades of blue colour that would look good for the pattern on the right had side of the business card.

Light blue: #889bd8

Dark Blue: # 111224

For testing reasons, I exported a version of the business card in grayscale. This was to show if the business card’s details would display properly in black and white.

Tuesday 8th March.

During the early production stage for a client product, I was given the task to research stock images for the early prototype website layout. This website would provide information on the North Coast and the attractions that can be seen.

I have spent most holidays up at Coleraine and have conveniently been taking scenic photos from the local town, Castlerock, which has connection to the Mussenden Temple.

Monday 7th March

Today was a slow day as Russel and Stephen were not present. I had no new tasks to complete as the map for the interactive map hadn't been submitted on the company’s communications.

Wednesday 2nd March.

When arriving this morning, Stephen came to me and talked about the major project that Phil, Dylan and Myself had to create that would serve as both a client project and our assignment project for this module.

As Stephen is aware of my animation, video editing and graphic skills, he brought up two job roles for me to complete for the major project. The first job role would be to create a vector map image for an interactive map on a client website. The next role for me to do would go out a film a promotional video with other employees of BigWetFish, using a drone camera. Once footage would be recorded, I would be the one to edit the final video for the client’s website. I gladly accepted the role of these tasks.

Afterwards, I came into my office to see Russell about my next task. Relating to our client, Kobault Studio, I was to write a short document about WordPress; such as what it was and how it would be beneficial for Kobault Studio to use. Creating text content for this short project would also be beneficial on my behalf as it would help develop my content creating techniques.

The following information is what I had created for what WordPress is and how it would be great for our client to use:

‘WordPress is a free open-source CMS (Content Management System) that allows users to create websites for their own needs. E.g. Businesses, Blog Page or Work Showcases. As it is a service installed on a web server, which can be used either as part of an internet hosting system or can be used as a network host through their website.

Reviewing their website gives the users a brief insight of what features can be used to create a website. The website gives the user the opinion to create their own unique domain name. Even if the user has an existing domain name, WordPress gives them the opinion to map the existing one to the new one.

They give users an excellent choice of design options for the user to choose from. This can be from a multiple-page website that have hyperlinks that takes the user to the related page or a scrolling parallax web page with jQuery coding. The options of themes are given to the users as well; from what colour scheme they want the page to have to adding an image in the background of the website header. After doing some research I came across this website that showcased examples of other people’s websites/blogs that were created using the WordPress system:

Tuesday 1st March.

Today, I resumed on creating different logo designs for our client, Kobault Studios. Once I felt I had created a good selection of different examples, I sent them to Russell through our business communications on HipChat.

There were no new tasks assigned to me today as Russell and Stephen were not present for most of the day. Stephen informed me the day prior (Monday 29th February) that Russell, himself and a few other staff members were attending a Careers Fair called ‘C.A.B.L.E’ (Carrickfergus Area Business Links with Education.) to talk about who BigWetFish are and what they do.

To keep myself busy once I finished the Kobault Logo task, I decided to work on my own portfolio information. I started to write down a rough bio for my animation business. I also updated my sketchbook of any outstanding sketches that needed to be fixed-up. With my artwork, I usually post it on DeviantART:

Monday 29th February

Today was the day I first started my work placement at BigWetFish.

I was greeted by Russell and we discussed about current projects that were in production within the company. When I was asked about my Digital Graphic skills, I presented Russell with my Sketch book, which I draw various bits of Art from Cartoon/Video Game characters to general logo ideas. I had also came prepared by bringing my graphics tablet with me.

Impressed by my drawings, Russell assigned me the role of content creator for our client projects. Not only would this include creating graphics for client websites such as logos, but it would include written content too. I was overall pleased with my job role as I have a higher interest and better understanding to graphic design over web coding and hosting.

During the week prior, Russell, along with Dylan and Phil, created rough concepts for a new logo for one of BigWetFish’s clients, Kobault Studios. These examples showed different layouts for the logo pattern and different font types that the team thought would suit.

My task was to create different logo layouts for Kobault and use a mix of various font types to see what one would suit. For this task, I used Adobe Illustrator to create the logo examples. The following screenshots below show what logo layouts I made and what example font types I selected that would see fit the logo design.

Wednesday 24th February.

Before the half term break began, I was informed by my tutors, Mark Kelso and Robert Wilsdon that they managed to secure me work placement at BigWetFish, a web hosting business located in Killroot Business Park, Carrickfergus.

A week prior to my initial start, I came in to meet my employer, Stephen Kinkaid to discuss about my role in the business for my professional practice module. I was informed by Stephen that he was aware of my animation work through word of my good friends, Dylan Rafferty and Phil Smallwood (Both whom were already on their placement timetable.) He said he really liked my work and found it very impressive. After meeting the rest of the team in the main office, I was taken next door to meet my supervisor, Russel Crawford. Phil and Dylan were working on a project with him to get a website up for a client before tomorrow.

Russel sat down with me and discussed what it is they do in their office and what possible roles I could have. Russell, Phil and Dylan would be doing the coding part of the projects and I would be handling the content. E.g. Logo’s, About information and Banners.

 In this section, I will look at 3 examples of 3D work in the industry and how the designers/animators might have created them.

I have chosen this as my first choice because of the design of the Ship’s exterior and the backgrounds. For creating the Arwing, I would say the designers may have used various box and cylinder shapes to create the main layout. Then, by using modifiers such as edit polys and Unwrap UVW’s to add the texture to create the final shape of the Arwing Ship.  For the background and the laser effects, it is possible the designers achieved this by using a particle system. My knowledge of using particle systems is currently limited to creating fire and basic ‘Sphere-like’ lasers. However creating a background such as the flaming asteroid is something I would be interested in learning to create in future projects.

The image above is a screenshot of a part of the fiction city Los Santos from the game ‘Grand Theft Auto V.’ I have chosen this as another example of good industry work just for the whole layout itself that can be viewed in the image. Rocksteady prove themselves capable of creating a 3D environment with realistic textures. The models that really catch my eye are of the train and bus.  For the train, it is possible that it could be a series of objects linked together and each part has it’s own animation. E.g. The train’s wheel.

This video I chosen as my other example is footage from the game, ‘The Last of Us.’ Overall the game shows great examples of using 3D models and animation.  The cities you visit in the game shows good detail in how run-down the buildings have gotten during the outbreak in the story. It is possible that after creating the basic layout of the buildings using shapes, the designers add extra detail into the models, such as broken windows and falling debris.

In this part, I will demonstrate how I have put my understanding of the 3D Modelling and Animation module to create my assignment.

For my assignment, I had the theme of a spaceship dog fight to base my animation on. I had two sci-fi references I could use for creating the animation, the first one being the following clip from Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones

My second reference was from one of my favorite Nintendo game series, StarFox. For the reference I used a series of Lets Play videos I did based of the best selling game of the series, StarFox 64. (Otherwise known in Europe as Lylat Wars)

However, due to the game’s view of the main ship, the Arwing, I had to do some research on the design of the spacecraft to create a better look to the ship and the enemy ship.

For the enemy ship, I tried to base it off as much of this ship design

To create the Arwing, I examined the ref images as to determine which design I should go with. This is reason both Image 1 and image 2′s Arwing designs are from different games in the series (Image 1′s design is of StarFox 64′s Arwing while Image 2′s represents StarFox Assault’s design.) I decided to create a mix between the two.

The following series of images are screenshots of some of the process of creating the main spacecraft, the Arwing.

Note: The nose was created by using a box shape and using an edit poly modifier.

As there was a gap between the cockpit and the nose, this allowed me to fill it by using a cylinder shape. This would also serve the purpose of the spacecraft’s G-Difuser system.

Each part of the animation, the Arwing, Enemy Ship and Asteroids, were animated in separate projects to reduce file size. Each ship was animated to simulate the movement of a spaceship. A camera was set up in the scene to capture a unique angle.

Each scene was exported as a PNG sequence at 30 FPS. The scenes were then composed in After Effects to create a new scene. As seen in the screenshot below:

The subject on this week’s lecture was on ‘KINETIC TYPOGRAPHY & THE USE OF TEXT’

By viewing examples of the subject, Kinetic Typography is a method of created and animated clip using text. This can be done by making the text appear on create through different ways, such as rotating from being one piece of text or having 2-3 lines of text laid out to form a particular shape.

This clip below is a example Kinetic Typography video that I have chosen for the way the animator has the text appear in some part. E.g. when one of the character’s talks about a cone, the animator made it out so that the shape of a cone was formed when 3 pieces of text was displayed on screen.

As a class exercise, I was to select a 10-15 second sequence of audio from an existing advert or film. Once the audio was imported into After Effects, the text had to be typed out to match when it is spoken and to also use a variety of kinetic text with various methods, from different movements, positions or rotations.

This clip is the video I used as my example to create the project from. The audio clip I used from this video was the ‘Stop, Look, Listen’ sound.

This week’s lecture was on Diagetic & Non-Diagetic sounds.

Using the horror genre is a great example to examine the use of sound. Sound in videos can create a powerful effect to the theme of the video. SO it is very important to have the audio match the video playback

Diagetic sound is a sound whose source is visible on screen or implied as to be present by the action of the film. This can range from voices of characters to sounds of the objects in the scene.

Non-diagetic sound is a sound whose source is neither visible on the screen or implied to be in the scene. This could be the narration or sound effects which are added to create a dramatic effect and/or mood.

As a team exercise, we created a short horror themed video using the 'Berberian Sound Studio’ to help create a dramatic and moody theme.

Once the animation was made, the last part was the Post-production phase. The screenshot below are example After Effects compositions that are created to combine the animation with the live action footage.

Using Information I learned from Week 4 lecture about ‘Lighting in Cinematography,’ I decided to give more texture into the scenes. The two After Effects plugins that I used frequently were

Hue/Saturation

Colour Curves

Using colour curves allowed me to adjust the individual RGB colours in the scenes. (In other words, I could make the scene have more of a green tint.) The Saturation settings would adjust the colour tone. (e.g. lowering the saturation would decrease the colour value.) (Screenshot 2 below shows an example of the colour correction settings used in the After Effects composition.)

I also added a shadow to the animated character. (See Screenshot 7) This was to give the illusion that he is a cartoon in real life.

In terms of camera angles, I had the camera recording at a decent level that would allow me to animate the character at a similar level to the live footage.

In Screenshot 8, it shows the footage of the character in Flash set up in the stage at a medium close up.

Once it was imported into After Effects, the animated character was adjusted slightly to create a better Medium close up look. (See Screenshot 9)

With the live action footage, most shots and angles were recorded in camera. However, in one scene were the character reacts to the oncoming car, I used a camera in After Effects (See Screenshot 10) and animated it to zoom in on the character’s reaction.

Once all the footage, both live and animated were composed, It was time to add all the video files into a New Premiere Pro Project and edit them all together in one final video. Screenshot 13 shows the final version in a Premiere.

Around the time editing the video, I received a reply from Redhorrocks (See Part 2: Production; Paragraphs 2 and 3 blog) with an attachment of an audio file which she recorded from the script I sent her. I was overall pleased with the final result she sent me.

As a last minute decision, I edited the cars in the video so that the license plates were censored out for health and safety reasons. (See Screenshot 15)

After this, the video was then ready to render. A copy was given to the Primary School first as it was the principal’s project I made for. After a week pasted, the video had been shown to the students during their school assembly. The video below is the final edit of the Road Safety Advert, entitled ‘STOP, LOOK, LISTEN.’

As I am a Stopmotion animator, I would tend to use camera movements as often as I can in my modern animations. The three camera movements I have came around before in my work are:

Shaky Cam

All three of these techniques are what I have learned from the following video tutorial:

For this week’s project (once again in teams) we went off to film a short video that would show a good example of the different camera movements (Tracking, Pans) and later put together in a final video with Foley sounds and music.

As a theme, we decided to go with a Batman themed video that would focus on a Joker-like character and how he would escape from prison. With this being Batman related, we had to look up clips that would not only relate to how we wanted the video to play out, but to show a good example of camera movements/angles too. The first video was a scene from Christopher Nolan’s 2008 movie, ‘The Dark Knight’; were the Joker would escape the exploding hospital and the camera is following him as he walks away.

The second video when used was from the video game, Batman: Arkham Asylum. We would us this scene as the main plot of how the Joker character breaks free from the guard’s clutches. This would also display a good example of camera angles, such as over the shoulder and close up shots.
