It was funny how her own forbidden thoughts had become their reality, teenage dreams and adult denial coming around full circle; over the years they had watched each other fall in love, then picked the pieces up when their hearts were broken, a soft spot always remaining for the other. Finally it was their turn, luck and circumstance falling into line and now, there wasnât a vision of her future that didnât feature Adam and his daughter. Every morning she felt the weight of his arm draped around her, chest pressed against her back, a position that Sierra had never enjoyed⌠It was always too hot or too intimate, but with Adam? That had changed almost instantly. The feel of him close to her had become a drug, something she no longer hoped for but craved day in, day out. She wasnât afraid to admit how much she needed him in this way, sheltered and safe between his arms. Dragging a hand through the top of his messy hair, Sierra laughed and thought about for a moment⌠On one hand Mia had been getting better with sleeping, but the problem had never been her. It was Sierra, her own restless nature struggling to calm enough to granted a sleep deep enough to feel refreshed the next morning. âOK, sheâs getting betterââ The brunette agreed, tracing the edge of his jaw one of her fingers. âBut still not enoughâŚâ A smirk pinched the edge of her mouth, not one ounce of validity in her complaints, âAnd you talk in your sleep.â Sierra paused and looked away in interest, thinking many years in advance. âDo you think weâll be complaining about her sleeping too much one day?â Experience had suggested that would be the case, especially if she followed in her fatherâs teenage footsteps.
Talking about their parents filled Sierra up with a warmth that made her feel at home, but for every happy memory she could feel their pain too⌠Not only her own demons, but Adamâs as well, even though the conversation made her smile. His mom was an incredible woman, âAnd she thought I knew all the gossip? We were pretty boring teenagersââ Sierra scoffed, thinking back to the hours they spent wondering around the forest pretending like nobody else existed. âI mean, I was anyway. At least people liked you, everyone thought I was some woodland creature you felt sorry for.â The comment elicited a laugh, echoes from hallway gossip no longer reminding her of the pain they caused her. It was funny now, more amusing than she ever thought possible. âIâll have to start giving you some cop training, thatâll make you more alertâŚâ She mused with a half-smile, thumb brushing along the bridge of his cheekbone. âMm, I donât knowâŚ.â And with that, he had melted her body into him even more, another tangled mess of kisses and laughter. Only now did she appreciate his athleticism properly, large biceps and a stomach made of steel, the ease at which he lifted her unlike anyone before. Girls had always fawned over him, jealous and confused by their friendship as teenagers, but Sierra only understood in a private setting. One unique to her own mind as he went off on dates, leaving her with a fake smile that always turned into a glare⌠A decade later, she was the one who was able to claim him as her very own. âOh my god, shut up about the damn waffle ironââ The brunette laughed, eyes rolling to the back of her head. âYou can have it, but you have to find it. Thatâs the deal.â She groaned with a smile, unwilling to help him on the quest to finding anything else that required opening more boxes. âIâm starting to think youâre more in love with the iron, than you are meâŚâ Not that she would be offended, food was an important part of daily life. Adam kissed her again and she laid back, enjoying the peace for as long as his daughter would grant them, âWhat do you mean?â Sierra mumbled against his collarbone, eyes opening to search for meaning in hisâŚ
Thatâs when she remembered, his disappearances and need to get away after something bad happened; his dadâs death, the breakup with Toni, any excuse to run and return when he felt ready, turning his back on everyone in Lanford, her included. It was a pain that she had been reminded of countless times, years passing since his last escape, but in the back of her head she wondered⌠Would he do it again? For a moment she felt her eyes glaze over as everything beneath her skin cried out in pain, the thought of waking up to someone else just gone a little too close for comfort. The brunette swallowed hard and felt her face fall into something serious, eyes begging with him not to do that to her. âPlease donât run away againâŚâ She whispered gently, hand still caressing the side of his face. âNot without me.â If he wanted to run she would go with them, wherever he wanted⌠But the thought of him leaving her now? It had the power to completely ruin everything she had worked through. âDonât do it againââ Her voice strained itself for a few seconds, hand dropping to rest on the side of his neck. âI wonât let you mess this upâŚâ Because she was stubborn and selfish, blunt and scalding, traits that didnât sit well with having things ruined. Pressing a kiss to his forehead, Sierra leaned down and put hers against his as he spoke, arms returning to wrap around the bottom of his neck, âYou think I would have let you treat me like crap?â The woman smirked, a small laugh escaping her throat. âOh boy, I would have kicked you to the curbâŚâÂ
But it wasnât just he who had changed, so had Sierra. A string of years spent with other men, two opposites that softened the walls around her and gave Sierra the chance to fall in love. Opening herself up was hard, but being alone was even harder â With Adam, she didnât need to release her inner most secrets. He knew them all, long before anyone else, experiencing them with her. âSomeone has to believe in youâŚâ And that someone would be her, because he needed it. A reminder that he was a good person, the best father and an incredible boyfriend. She was lucky, she didnât deserve someone like him. Itâs why she didnât struggle beneath his weight, back pressed into the cushions as he trapped her on the couch, a smile plastered across her mouth as he leaned in for yet another kiss. âOn one condition?â Sierra pulled herself away briefly, an index finger pressed against his mouth. âWe do this moreââ
Keeping track of Miaâs sleep schedule and patterns, wasnât really something he did anymore. In the beginning, he tried to do everything by the book, even when it didnât work, and when a baby clearly canât be fitted into an average, no two the same, and now all of it was down to impulse, to gut feelings, and as far as he gathered, Mia was in a steady phase, sleeping through the night despite still waking up early. âNot nearly enough,â he agreed, a chuckle escaping his lips. He opened his mouth to try and catch her finger when she traced his jawline, a playful growl leaving him in the attempt, though with little success. He laughed instead, pulling her closer to make up for any space possibly created between them in the last twenty seconds. âI talk in my sleep, huh? Do I at least say interesting stuff?â He asked. He knew he mumbled a few things here and there in his sleep, but as far as he knew, it was harmless stuff, barely decipherable. âRight now I canât imagine ever thinking sheâll sleep too much. I mean, if she ends up sleeping until noon when sheâs a teenager, weâll technically have most of the house to ourselves until noon too, you know? I like the sound of that,â he smirked, a boyish grin tugging at his lips when he glanced down at Sierra by his side. There was no doubt that he loved and adored Mia, but he sure as hell didnât mind more alone time with Sierra either.
His teen years seemed a lifetime ago by now, but thinking about it did prod at some sort of sentimentality inside his chest, memories pouring backâ a time where things had been easier at some point, and then much, much harder the next. Losing his mom at sixteen had been life changing, but having caring friends and family had held him together, and Sierra, even back then, had a lot to do with his survival. âYeah, she definitely thought you knew everythingâ well, everything that had anything to do with me, which, you know, you kind of did.â No secrets had ever lived long among the two of them, not even back then, maybe with the exception of suppressed ones, like him having feelings for her, but he supposed it didnât matter that much now; everything worked out in the end, after all. âCop training? Sounds really hard, donât know if I can do it,â he joked and turned his head, placing a kiss on her fingers, barely focused on the conversationâ- not compared to how focused he was on Sierra instead, gazing down at face, every feature etched into his brain, and yet still as breathtakingly beautiful as if heâd only just seen her now for the first time. He could kiss her like this, like there was no tomorrow, for the rest of time, and not be bothered, not even realize time was ticking, and the outside world was still there. Maybe if he didnât love Mia so much, heâd never move from this couch ever again. âMore in love with the waffle iron?â He said and managed a faux gasp, leaning his head back to look at her with mock horror on his face, but only for a second. âYeah, youâre right, I only have eyes for the waffle iron. If it was here right now, I mean, god, you could get naked right in front of me and I wouldnât even notice,â he teased, hooking a thumb through one of her belt loops to pull her closer to him with a boyish grinâ oh, heâd definitely notice.
Strong arms wrapping around her held her in place against him, his lips brushing against her hairline as he peppered her skin with featherlight kisses in their embrace. It was hard to focus on any kind of conversation with her when she was this close, but he was getting better at it; and this one in particular was important enough to rope and hold at least enough of his attention to make every word genuine when it formed on his tongue, and left a second later. He leaned his head back, blue hues taking in her contrasting ones as they held his gaze, a sea of trapped emotion to drown in in auburn shades and golden undertonesâ he loved those eyes, so expressive and earnest, nothing even remotely insincere about them, and maybe especially now, begging him not to do what heâd done to her too many times already. âHow could I?â He whispered and loosened his hold on her, only to bring a free hand to her face, fingertips brushing back stray locks of umber hair to pin them behind her ear. ââwhen youâre here?â He gave a small shake of his head, his brows furrowed now in the same serious manner her features had found, fingers pushing to the nape of her neck as he cupped her face in his hand. âYou and Mia, youâre everything I need, you know that, right?â He looked at her, eye to eye, willing her to try and look for any signs of dishonesty, knowing sheâd never find even the sliver of it. He loved herâ- heâd always loved her, and just the thought of ever leaving her behind for any reason at all, well, it didnât even exist to him; it was as impossible as bringing the dead back to life was. âNo you wonât let me,â he agreed and closed his eyes when she pressed a kiss to his forehead, his thumb sweeping along her malar as his heart skipped a beat. This was all heâd ever wanted, and with it, everything else fell into placeâ every little thing he might have wanted to run from in the past, it no longer existed to him, swept away with that first kiss, with her âI love youâ, as if life suddenly made sense. âNo,â he said. âHopefully you wouldnât have, but love makes people crazy, right?â At least he knew that, and that was why, in a way, he was glad Sierra didnât have to love him when heâd gone through his dadâs death for instance.
Those memories were particularly dark, but they didnât get their foot in the door this time, his mind preoccupied with Sierra as he trapped her under his weight, thankful for the size of their couch maybe right now more than ever. âCouldnât be happier that that someone is you,â he said against her skin and looked up at her, a boyish grin tugging at his lips, only momentarily faltering when her finger came to it too. âOn one condition?â He repeated against it, arching a brow in curiosity. It couldâve been anything, but the one she chose was pretty damn easy to go along with, a laugh escaping him and a small shake of his head offered. âOh, you mean, making out on the couch like teenagers? I guess, if you really want that, I could go along with it,â he said and kissed her again, fervent, persuasive, in love.
