it feels like warframe died at the end of witw and has been resurrected by some fell necromancer so that it looks and sounds like it used to but is actually only a shambling corpse wearing my beloved game's skin to trick me into letting down my guard. however i am cocking my gun and shooting it point blank in the face while it moans "but there's a baby, what about the baby, dont you love babies?" blam blam blam blam blam blam blam

tl;dr digital extremes writer katherine kingsley has an unrepentant history of AI use
did that get your attention? sorry for the clickbait-y title. i'm not ashamed to say i want eyes on this because i want kingsley removed from her position as principle [sic] writer at digital extremes. just so all my cards are on the table.
but more broadly i sincerely believe her ethos and writing direction are bad for the game and bad for the company on the whole. she doesn't care about the story, the worldbuilding, the tropes, the genre conventions. she has proudly proclaimed "i don't even write sci-fi!" in an official public DE-affiliated appearance, as though it's so easy anyone could do it, just look at her! and not an established genre with expectations and conventions the audience (reasonably) expects and the author is (reasonably) expected to follow.
sigh.
sorry, i know you kept reading for the juicy gossip. here is the link to her personal website's "illustration" page: [link] it contains the heading "all illustrations done by me". it also contains generative AI art.
here is the link to an archived version of the site, if the live version mysteriously changes in the next few days: [link]
i realize this is not an accusation to be made lightly, and i didn't initially do so publicly. back in may 2025, i sent an email to the DE head of PR informing them of my suspicions. i received no acknowledgment or response. the genAI art has remained proudly on display on kingsley's site. i figured DE didn't care and decided to let it go.
but given DE's recent anti-AI statement i feel i have a responsibility to draw attention to the problem publicly. this was not my preferred mode to address the issue but it's what is left to me after official private channels failed.
i have some closups of the gen AI art, with explanations of the evidence supporting my accusations, which i know are very serious. i only make this post because i think the community has the right to know.
see here some common gen AI art errors/tells:
garbled or incoherent shapes where a human would put something recognizable:
lack of symmetry in clothing/armor design in a way that is not clearly deliberate:
blurring and mushing shapes together in a vague, indistinguished way:
i do not think all of the art on that page is genAI. much of it is clearly by her own hand, or painted over photos. i am not here to criticize anybody's amateurish or unpolished artistic skill.
i am making this post because:
1) DE has very firmly stated they will not use AI in the production of their games.
2) i see evidence that one of their lead writers has used genAI in the past and tried to pass it off as her own work. and
3) i am worried that she may do so again in the future without informing her employers or her fans.
please do not use this as an excuse to publicly harass kingsley. that is not productive, and not what i want. i simply think that video game fans should have all available information when they are making decisions about what studios—and what behavior—they want to support.
Also updated to say "all illustrations SHOWN HERE done by me" lmfaooooo
And yet, between the mismatched arms and the sleeve as a jumble of triangles and the six fingers, I just sort of have some doubt that a bot was never involved here.
i felt my examples were sufficient, so i didn't include an inspection of the illustration at the footer of the page, but after the disappearance of the other pieces i want to show this one in its entirety to further illustrate my point.
this building is a strange mishmash of architectural features, with abstract asymmetrical stained glass windows, a clock with three or maybe four hands on it and no readable numbers, what might be the leadlines of a glass roof over the street on the left, sort of the vague idea of what might be another doorway next to the main one...
seriously, what is this? can you tell? because i can't.
again, i am not seeking to mock "bad" art. artists are people, people make mistakes, i recognize this. but these blurry, vague, formless shapes are merely the general idea of art, and that's all generative AI is really capable of: something that looks fine and even interesting at first glance, but starts to fall apart if you attempt to scrutinize it at anything deeper than a surface level.

"A few times over the years since that nightmare Void dive, Albrecht had let things slip. Never very much--never a full story. Just that he cared little for mirrors these days." -moonboots
the fact that Roathe the Villain is still a success state for his character is craaazy tbh but not unexpected from writers who decided to write him to begin with but 💀💀💀 the fact that lyon and marie APPROVE, that lyon says you brought him "a manner of surety. purpose." no matter whether you make roathe decide to redeem himself or not at all like straight up

The Aster that would be rescued from the Zariman was initially an eccentric precocious child. He held fantastical and profound ideas about the nature of things. He considered the ambitious thinkers of the Entrati family to be his role models, after all. By all indications, Aster had a bright future ahead of him, a future that was quickly dashed against the rocks by the Zariman Disaster.
Just as many of his fellow Zariman survivors (all children), Aster received an arcane boon from the void, granting him eldritch abilities. The children were all eventually rescued, only to remain in a sort of limbo whilst the Orokin decided what was to be done with these void devils. It was discovered that the children (now called Tenno) could be used to control bio=mechanical drones known as Warframes
With this revelation, the Tenno became honor-bound warriors in service to Orokin. Over time, they developed their own culture, art, and schools of thought and science. Through all of this, Aster continued his studies. The Orokin Empire had been embroiled in an interstellar war with the Sentient beings from the Tau system. These Sentients were ultimately creations of the Orokin, and Aster became fascinated with them. He absorbed as much information as he could about them,. In battle, he observed their behavior, and after witnessing one Sentient individual mourn the loss of a comrade, Aster came to realize that these beings he had been so curious about were perhaps not so different from humanity. At the time, this was considered blasphemous thought, so the boy did not speak on it.
To Aster's great relief, a truce had been declared in the Orokin-Sentient War. The Orokin and Tenno were welcomed to the distant binary star system of Tau, the home of the Sentients. There, the fledgling Tauron Academy was established in good faith within the good faith of cultural and scientific exchange. Aster was one of the Tenno to be involved in the academy. There, he took part in Caliban Prime Project, where he fulfilled the role of lab assistant and field tester. He would pilot the Caliban Prime frames into live battle to ensure they were functioning as expected.
Aster's time at the academy lead to him developing close friendships with the Sentients, former sworn enemies. He'd emerse himself in their culture, learned their beliefs and took part in their rites. He found a new mentor in the sagacious Archimedean Itzam, who encouraged Aster in his endeavors at the academy and in life. All of this made it so much more painful for Aster when the truce suddenly collapsed, and the Sentients were condemned to be bloom-starved.
With the war back on, the Tenno and Orokin forces fled the Tau system. Each of the Tenno were sequestered on Earth's moon, Lua, wherein they were placed into somatic stasis, a procedure that was to be known as the Second Dream. This action taken by Archimedean Margulis, the caretaker of the Tenno, lead to her sentencing to execution.
Following the execution of Margulis, her lover, Executor Ballas, defected to the Sentients. in exchange, Ballas gave away the secret location of the Tenno. A massive Sentient incursion lead by the Sentient Hunhow and his son Erra was launched upon Lua. During the action, Aster's current Warframe was destroyed, and the trauma of this event threw the boy into a deeper level of unconsciousness within his somatic stasis, one that he would not wake from until long after the Orokin Empire fell.
Following the costly victory of the Orokin Empire in what would become known as The Old War, the Tenno turned on their masters, slaughtering almost all of them and bringing their rule to an end. The Tenno then entered a aeon-spanning dormancy known as the Long Sleep. Untold millennia later, they would be re-awoken by the Lotus, who had cared for them after the loss of Margulis. They found themselves within Warframe bodies once more with no understanding of their true bodies now hidden in the Void.
Without a Warframe to return to, Aster's subconscious wandered Lua within the Void, like a ghost in search of substance of being. It was only with the shock of Lua falling out of the Void that Aster's being detected a familiar presence... a sensation he had buried the meaning of. A transference signature. His mind was drawn to it, leading him to a discarded Caliban Warframe, a crude mockery of the Caliban Prime frames he had once worked with in Tau. It had been created by Erra, and abandoned once the assault on Lua had failed. Without its controller, Aster was able to achieve transference with Caliban and pilot it.
It wasn't long after that Aster was awoken from the Second Dream alongside the other Tenno. With his new Warframe, he sought to make his way through an Origin System he no longer recognized, guided by The Lotus. He traveled the system, wherever he was needed, but in his own time, he continued to look into the Sentients. What had happened to them after the War? The Orokin were gone... Was there any need for more fighting between bios and machine? Some Sentients still remained in the Origin System... could they be healed? Would that make up for everything that had happened between them? Aster had to know....
