Your guy got mentioned, but at what cost?
(Actually, my guy got mentioned twice :) But I’ll focus on the first instance.)
Erwin’s mention came at the cost of Armin’s self esteem, I’m afraid. If “Erwin” is the standard that Armin has been holding himself to all these years, it’s incredibly tragic. His survival in the serum bowl was never merit based. Levi made that clear. Hange made that clear. It’s true that more would be expected of him as someone with the power of a titan, but the only person who made Armin’s survival something that hinged on his abilities as a person was Eren.
Eren sincerely believe in Armin’s abilities and that helped Armin face what he needed to do. With Eren’s rejection of him in 112 along with Armin’s complete misreading of the situation since then, it’s no wonder he’s shaken.
I feel bad for him. I think he’ll get his act together soon but this chapter was a tough read for everyone who loves this guy.
