Martha grew up running around her father's matchbox business in the east end of London. When she was freshly 18 she was married off to Bernard Finch, a farmer out towards Henford-on-Bagley. After a difficult birth she ended up having a single daughter and no sons, leaving Elizabeth's future husband as the sole heir. Martha and Bernard were married for 32 years before Bernard's demise after a bout of tuberculosis, leaving Martha a widow and Elizabeth without her father.

Arthur came from a family of cattle farmers who have lived in Henford-on-Bagley for six generations. He was thrown into farm work early in life but his passion always stayed with writing, he dreams of writing a book one day about his days as a farmer; but the farm still calls to him.

Elizabeth came from a family of matchbox makers who had been in the business for 80 years. Growing up poor, Elizabeth learned how to mend clothing, cook with hardly any ingredients, and how to get the best deal on food at the market. She was married off to a local farmer with hopes that he can revive the family's farm.

Elizabeth started her morning by brushing her hair. It was an unusually sunny day for February. As the brush stroked through her hair, her thoughts drifted, by the end of the day she would be Mrs. Elizabeth Finch. she didn't know how to feel about this agreement. Her mother had arranged it as the farm needed a new ranch hand and her mother wished for grandchildren, but she didn't know if those were her wishes too.
