can white trans women be racist? of course. are they disproportionately racist compared to other sub-demographics of white people? not in my experience, no. my point with this post isn't to say that white trans women cannot be racist or should never be called out. instead, i hope it makes people question the motivations of some of these callouts. how genuine is the concern for poc when the one doing the callout is ignoring the voices of trans woc? it's obvious from where i stand that much of the concern about "racist trans women" is really a screen behind which pretty routine transphobia/transmisogyny is being hidden.

There's a concept I've been sitting with for a few months now, because I like the idea of Saints but I'm not nor ever have been Catholic. At the same time, I do feel that there are people who, though they were specifically originally *real people*, end up becoming much More postmortem than they were alive via their story becoming elevated in local/regional/national folklore. Critically, this has to occur almost/entirely postmortem I think - people who go around creating their own legend while they live are a completely different kind of thing, vs. individuals communally apotheosized by their people After poking around at different thoughts/terms for a while, the term I've landed on for this is Ascendants. They've become more than they once were, beyond a realm of peak humanity that terms like "Hero" tend to imply, birthed status that "Demi-god" alone tends to imply, or explicit religious ties that Saints or similar tend to imply. I think one of the most obvious applications of this, to me, would be John Henry. For those not familiar, he's a Black folkloric figure in the US commonly sang about in blues songs, who was a man of herculean strength and skill with a hammer, who challenges a railroad rock drilling machine to a race through a mountain to try and save the jobs of him and his team. He won, only for his heart to give out from the stress of overwork, his victory marking his death.

The real John Henry was most likely a young man born in the 1800s who had been arrested and imprisoned to work as "leased labor" (part of how the US replaced slave labor) on the C&O railway, and likely died of silicosis and was buried in an unmarked grave, similarly to untold hundreds of similar leased labor prisoners who died similarly. I believe that as an Ascendant, he would be representative of both free workers and prisoners. Common variants of his songs, especially work songs, speak about how "this hammer killed John Henry, but it won't kill me" as a worker's commitment to guarding your life more than the labor you'd give whoever you're working for. Proving your strength, value, and skill to your employer isn't worth giving your life for, especially if you're being coerced into that labor for survival. I think some of the traits he would embody or be sought for would be safety (especially in workplaces), strength, community solidarity, and perseverance. He would probably also be a patron of Abolitionists. Another possible Ascendant from US folklore I can think of off the top of my head would be John Brown and Crispus Attucks? But a lot of people from US history/folklore actually wouldn't qualify because either they had a big part in propagating their own legends (See: most early white men like the founding fathers, who functionally have their own religion via Americanism) or weren't real people in the first place (see: Paul Bunyan) If y'all have ideas of other folkloric people who might fit the bill as Ascendants (not just US folklore, I just know US folklore best), you should bring em up in reblogs im curious. Ok, so, bottom surgery recovery is going ~splendidly~ tbh, I’ve been off opioids basically all week, she’s healing well, she even looks pretty which at under the one-month mark is making me feel pretty optimistic. The only problems it’s giving me are that sometimes if I see something really gross it makes my body feel like it’s trying to suck itself inward from my vagina, like a black hole generated by the power of “ew ew ew,” and that healing is really tiring so I’m like…always sleepy. But tbh most of bottom surgery recovery has been peaceful, I’ve had a lot of time to do some self-reflection (which I hate, doing my own therapy as a patient suuuuuucks), BUT, I do have one funny story:

Right as I wake up there’s a nurse there who hustles over and says he’s glad he saw me wake up and tells me he’s giving me some pain meds and then he gives me IV Fentanyl and so I go from like “Ow ow ow ow awake awake awake” to “ooooooh fuck I’m floating on clouds made of rainbows” in like 6 seconds and so I was pretty out of it. The hospital had all the recently-post op patients all in one big-ass room, and they see patients for ALL sorts of surgeries, so I was next to an old guy who got his knee replaced on one side and some young 30-something dude with some kind of mechanism on his leg. So I asked him what happened since I was high as fuck and feeling kind as a result, and he said he broke his leg hiking off-trail when his leg went down a literal rabbit hole and snapped his shinbone. I say something like “damn dude that blowssssss” while giggling because I’m high as FUCK on actual fentanyl and he’s like “Yeah, for real, I’m feeling great right now though! What about you? What are you in here for?”

And I fully was not thinking like a person, I was thinking like a fentanyl-addled tgirl so I just go “Oh, haha, they cut my dick off!”

And he just kinda stops and is like “Hah-WAIT what? Why?” and I was trying to think of an acceptable answer to tell this cis guy because it’s dawning on me through my drug-induced haze that not everybody wants their penis gone and before I can think of a response two nurses just came up and…wheeled him away. Idk where to, and I don’t think he did either, because he kept looking back at me and frantically asking the nurses where they were taking him and I never gave him an adequate response so he probably thought he was gonna get that “Transgender for Everyone” shit before he was probably actually delivered to whoever his ride home was.
