I’m currently in Liberia documenting stories around free education for vulnerable girls in Liberia. It’s been a week now and I’ve seen some heavy things that I know will continue to weigh on my mind, but also a lot of beauty. MY BODY IS A PRISON by crazinist artist 

Ghanaian performance artist Va-Bene Elikem Fiatsi AKA crazinist artist in a performance called “My Body Is A Prison” at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).  crazinist is one of the most daring performing artists in Africa who uses his body as the object in almost all of his performances. In an interview i had with him 2 years ago, he told me  “I believe in the power of the body to subvert social codes and cultures that will lead people to rethink and question the existence of everything.”

I wrote this about his work in an interview for @accradotalt  ‘crazinisT like many other performance artists in Africa uses his art to query the dehumanisation and objectification of the human body as socio-political merchandise. His “Return of the Slaves,” “Stench of Silence” and “Borders” performances for example were exhibitions of the recurrence of crimes against humanity that are deliberately ignored and made to appear as a freak show. crazinisT artisT uses dog leashes in some of his performances which he says depicts the extreme form of humiliation and the agonies of the vulnerable.’

TSA: Tell us about the AKAN EP?

AKAN: The AKAN EP is a self-introduction; to get people acquainted with my creative ability and to experience my unique passion for rap. It was a fun project I embarked on oblivious of how it was going to be received. I enjoyed doing it and I am glad it has been a stirring project!

TSA: What inspires you?

AKAN: Greatness!

Greatness inspires and gives others the urge to keep pushing the limits. For me it is quite corny to be part of the bunch that are just doing something like it is supposed to be done. I want to be able to redefine the game and set the bar some notches up.

TSA: Throw us back to your hip-life influences? What do you miss?

AKAN: I used to pay close attention to Okomfo Kwadee and Obrafour. Back then it was pure artistry. They had nothing to prove or lose. They brought a message with a delivery that was animated and raw. This is what I think is missing from hip-life now.

TSA: Is rap music an important tool for you?

AKAN: I love music and I found my voice through rap, which comes naturally to me. It has only become necessary that I engage others through an art form that I am good at.

TSA: What foot wear would you wear everyday?

AKAN: I love the Nike Air Max shoes! The colors they put together are mind blowing.
