humbly i ask you: if you're going to spend the time to pop a couple of emojis into the comments of a fic, might you instead take another 30 seconds and tell the author what made you feel that way instead?
the emojis are nice but knowing what made you want to leave them... that would be so much nicer
ao3 asking if i want to see mature content. do i want to see birds in the sky. do i want to feel the wind in my hair and the grass under my feet
the number 87 kinda looks like a plague doctor
Youβve just changed the fucking game

AO3 should have an Annotation Mode where you can click to view all of the author's commentary and thoughts about certain parts of the work. A little comment that says "I spent five hours researching vintage radio mechanics for this and didn't even end up using it" or "this is an ancient Hebrew literary technique!" would make my day
idk I don't think y'all want this from me
my daily affirmation as an author
when the kudos email is like four screens long and it's all one username over and over and over
marry me
I got another spam comment today on AO3, and I want to share it as a PSA. But before I do, I want you to understand that you SHOULD NOT DO what this comment is asking. Ok? Ok.
See that bit at the bottom? Don't do that. Insert ParamedicGuy.gif going "Don't."
Other malicious spam comments I've gotten seemed designed to make an author question their writing, or outright encourage them to delete their stories from AO3. This one is different, in that it tries to get you to destroy the work on your own computer.
If you ran that command, it basically locates your Documents folder, then deletes everything in it, including all subfolders. It also does it without any prompt, so you have no chance to second guess your actions.
This is just fucking trolling.
Coincidentally, we just did training on a cyberattack similar to this, called a ClickFix attack. You can read about how that works here.
As a general rule, if ANYONE or ANY WEBSITE tells you unsolicited* to do anything in Powershell, CMD RUN, command prompt, shell command, or something similar, DON'T.
*There are legit reasons for running commands in PowerShell or the command prompt, but in those cases you are likely seeking out a solution to a problem you are already experiencing. Don't just run random commands on your computer as recommended by some unlogged-in guest on a fan fiction site.
Always think and consider before taking action, and get a second opinion from a trusted source. When I got this comment I was pretty sure what the command would do, and it took me about three seconds of googling to confirm it.
Be safe out there!
as an IT guy I can confirm that this command WILL delete all your shit. DO NOT DO IT.
Here's a bit of a further breakdown for the ones curious about what the hell this command does.
What you're basically telling your PC if you ran this is "go into this folder (Documents) and then Recursively (for all sub-folders) Remove (delete) all files therein Forcefully (without any user input and also if a file was locked)."
The little "Exclude *.archiveofourown" they tack in there is just honestly absolutely diabolical if you don't know what you're looking at.
As an inexperienced user, you'll think "oh of course, exclude ao3, that's what I want!"
*.archiveofourown is a file ending, including any file title.
There are not archiveofourown files.
This is telling your PC to ignore files that don't exist.
Honestly, the gall of these trolls is astounding.
DO NOT DO THIS.
And as a further alarm bell, even if a well-meaning anon came to your comments to warn you:
why has ao3 not put out this warning officially?
this command is for Windows users. WHAT ABOUT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO USE MAC OR LINUX?
Hope my humble knowledge was informative to someone. Stay safe, everyone.
Any post that is hostile or panic-inducing like this seem to go for the "username (guest)" naming style. Don't trust them.
Y'all AO3 does not send warnings like this IN INDIVIDUAL COMMENTS WTF they can email you directly.
saw someone say that they don't read fics under 10k and had to laugh because more fool you, that is where all the bangers are. obviously I'm biased but truly nothing hits like a 1.5k fic with a lowercase title from some obscure poet where nothing actually happens and yet you emerge blinking with a completely new outlook on the character. infinitely rereadable. like a perfectly crafted pastry. I'm gobbling them up!
Look I'm as rambly as the next person and some of my stories can get completely out of hand but I am a firm believer that some of the best, tightest fan writing is in the 40-70k range. Long enough for a really solid plot, not so long that it's full of repetition and pacing problems.
That's not to say that every fanfiction that's over some number is full of problems, there are some very long masterpieces out there. But I really do think that this bizarre fixation on length (heh) is making some writers self-consciously pad out fics where the plot naturally resolves in 70k out to 100k with repetitive stuff, sideplots that don't add much, or extra bonus smut scenes. It's their prerogative, and it's fic, so it doesn't much matter the how or why.
But if you refuse to read "shorter" fics you're only doing yourself a disservice. There's good shit in there. Length doesn't automatically mean quality.

Controversial opinion but I do not think Dev Patel would be a good Heathcliff. His aura is too friendly. His vibes are too fresh. He is a great actor but he canβt control the fact he has the sweetest eyes I have ever seen on a human being. It was what made him an excellent Gawain, even when his character was being awful, his natural charisma made him impossible to truly despise. We need a true embittered brooder for Heathcliff.
#I still maintain he would be the Jonathan Harker of all time though
He just looks like he wants to sell some real estate, incredibly naively.
