CARTHAGE, Maine — A Franklin County deputy determined that an East Dixfield man accidentally shot himself in the thigh Sunday when he slipped in the mud while target practicing, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said Tuesday.
Thomas Hamlin, 64, was at his camp when the accident happened, he said.
He still had the .40 caliber handgun in his hand when he slipped in the greasy mud, he said.
He was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington to be treated.
Deputy Christopher Rhinhart investigated and determined it was an accident, Nichols said.
FORT WORTH — A 72-year-old man was fatally shot as Fort Worth police investigated an alarm call early Tuesday morning in a neighborhood near Woodhaven County Club.
According to Fort Worth police, the alarm call came just before 1 a.m. in the 400 block of North Havenwood Lane. But after arriving at the scene, officers became involved in a confrontation with a man armed with a gun who was across the street from where the alarm was going off.
Feeling threatened, at least one officer fired at the man, who was later identified as Jerry Waller, police said. Waller was dead at the scene, in his own garage.
"It's just awful," said former City Council member Becky Haskin, who lives nearby. "It's a sad, sad accident."
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office said the cause of Waller's death was "multiple gunshot wounds."
Haskin said she and her husband heard five shots. "They were just rapid-fire, one after the other, and my husband said, 'That's a police officer,'" Haskin said.
Haskin said there was no sign of a burglary at the home and that the alarm may have triggered accidentally.
"I was told that the police officers were sobbing uncontrollably," she said.
Two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave as the major case unit investigates.
Fort Worth police spokeswoman Tracey Knight called it a "horrible tragedy."
"It was horrible for the homeowner. A family has lost a loved one that can never be replaced," she said. "An officer has gone through an incident that no officer wants to go through."
In handcuffs and with none of his family around, the boy sat alone quietly in the corner of the courtroom, accused of shooting a girl in the chest.
The 15-year-old Crystal Lake Middle School student appeared before Broward Circuit Judge Michael Orlando on Tuesday, facing one count of aggravated battery in the Memorial Dayshooting of Jolessica Williams, also 15, of Fort Lauderdale.

An arrest report does not say how the boy managed to obtain a gun and sheds no light on whether the Pompano Beach shooting was accidental. Still, the boy told investigators he found the gun and admitted to shooting the girl, said sheriff's spokeswoman Dani Moschella.
The boy, charged with one count of aggravated battery, is expected to return to court Monday. The Sun Sentinel is not identifying him because of his age.
According to a sheriff's report, the girl was shot as she stood on the porch of a house in the 1500 block of Northwest Eleventh Circle about 5:30 p.m. Monday. Williams was there with the boy who shot her and two other teenagers, including a 14-year-old relative.
At some point before the shooting, one teen warned the boy about the gun, Moschella said. "He told him, 'Don't you watch the news? That's dangerous,'" she said.
Officials said the boy allegedly told Williams he was going to shoot one of her breasts.
Despite suffering a gunshot to the upper left torso region, Williams is expected to recover.
Pompano Beach paramedics treated her, and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue took her by helicopter to Broward Health Medical Center, where she remained hospitalized Tuesday.
At Tuesday's court hearing, officials said the young shooting suspect was on probation, but didn't say what led to the probation.
Gordon Weekes, Broward County's chief assistant public defender, said it was too early to comment about the boy's case.
He said his young client's family wanted to appear in court in support but couldn't afford to be there.
State records show that in January this year, the boy pleaded no contest to robbery. But adjudication was withheld, meaning no conviction was recorded in that case. Since 2010, the boy also has been charged with of burglary and vehicle theft, the records show. The outcome of those cases weren't available.
Monday's shooting was the second time in less than a week that a middle-schooler was shot by another teenager in South Florida.
On Friday, D'Angelo Marte, 12, was shot on the leg at his school at Redland Middle School in Southwest Miami-Dade. Witnesses told police D'Angelo was shot when a classmate brought a gun to school in his backpack. The backpack fell on the floor and the gun went off.
Marte returned home Monday, while the other boy was expected to make a court appearance this week.

The incident occurred at Redland Middle School, located on 16001 SW 248 St. in Southwest Miami-Dade, Friday afternoon.
"He just couldn't walk and he was laying down on the floor gushing blood," said sixth grade student Pablo Sanchez.
According to police, a student took a gun to school in a backpack. The gun accidentally discharged and hit a student in the leg.
Sanchez saw his friend get shot in the leg in history class. "He had a gun in his bookbag and he just dropped his bookbag and all you hear is a sudden boom!" he said.
The 13-year-old took off his own shirt and wrapped it around his classmate's leg to render aid.
The school was placed on lockdown for a brief period of time. Students were dismissed 30 minutes later than the normal time the school day ends.
The student struck was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital. He is in stable condition.
Parents were concerned and worried. "I just flew the moment he texted me," said a parent. "It's not pretty to know that that's happening here."
The students were taken to an elementary school nearby to be released to their parents.
When asked how Sanchez learned how to use his shirt to apply pressure to his classmate's leg injury he said, "Well, I've seen it in a lot of movies, and so I just did that."
Sanchez was very surprised about the incident. "I just can't actually believe he brought a gun to school," said Sanchez.

Harvey- A Harvey man has been booked with negligent homicide after investigators with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office say he killed a friend during a late-night drinking session.
Phillip McClendon, 28, also was booked with being a felon in possession of gun in connection with the fatal shooting of Robert Casbon, 32, on May 20. Deputies found Casbon dead in front of a home in the 3800 block of Cimwood Drive, said Glen Boyd, a sheriff’s spokesman.
Boyd reported that a witness told detectives that McClendon and another man were drinking with Casbon in Casbon’s garage around midnight. McClendon told investigators that he accidentally shot Casbon while moving the gun from a shelf and putting it into his pants pocket. The men had been engaged in horseplay while drinking and McClendon claimed he was moving the gun for safety, Boyd said.
However, when initially questioned by detectives, McClendon denied being involved in the shooting, and detectives still have not recovered the weapon used. McClendon has prior convictions for narcotics possession and aggravated battery, Boyd said.
Casbon’s body was discovered after his family heard gunshots, and then found him lying on the ground. The other man inside the garage has not been identified by police.
