rock and roll
This I like
All of my friends that had also created a comic strip over the last few months may have our comics put into a collective anthology. We decided to all create a cover page for the collective work.
I chose to create a rough graphic of Superman on some newsprint using copic markers. I printed out an existing illustration and placed some newsprint over top on a light table. I then created a crude version of the illustration with multiple layers of marker. Once complete I cut it out and glued it to another piece of white paper to scan it.
Using Photoshop at this point I rendered some 3D text to mimic the Superman comics title and placed my sketch underneath it.
Wishing I had some more time to really make this great however I got swamped with some other responsibilities.
Hope you enjoy!
Here is the completed comic strip accompanied by a flat coloured splash page. Hope you enjoyed watching me create this as much as I enjoyed making it!
As mentioned in my previous post, I had been working on this splash page for my comic strip. I began with a quick pencil composition, after coming up with something I was satisfied with I then used ink and a crow quill pen to render the line work.
The first image is of my line work scanned, then the second image has a shadow that I rendered on a separate piece of tracing paper and scanned. I reduced the opacity of the shadow to make it look more believable.
The last image is the line work with some additional details that I pencilled in using a drawing tablet and photoshop.

Here they are the finished comic pages. I applied flat digital colouring using Photoshop. Feels like it’s missing something though. I might rough out some ideas for a splash page to help make it more complete.
Hello again, I have a couple follow ups on my short comic. This is the finished inks scanned. Next I will apply flat digital colouring using Photoshop.
Hello again,
Here is some progress on my comic strip with the theme of SLEEP. I have gone out and picked up some official size comic layout pages and began by using a non reproduction blue pencil to set my images in place and mark out my cell layouts. Next step is to try my hand at using india ink with a crow quill pen and brush.
I will be sure to post my inked comic next week.
Howdy folks I'm about to embark on a new journey one of my first attempts at a traditional short comic strip. I am using the term sleep as a theme from the site illustration Friday. I had a few friends of mind scribble out a few of their nightmares as well as I wrote down a few things I thought made up a decent nightmare. I ended up settling on a nightmare induces by NyQuil, the dream itself would be you waking up not knowing where you are in a canoe in the middle of the ocean. Then being attacked by a menacing giant octopus. Only to find yourself in your own bed tangled up in your sheets.
Hopefully it turns out better than my thumbnails look at the moment.
This challenge was based on the combination of the word of the week from illustration Friday and the fact that it was Valentines Day. We decided to make funny valentines cards inspired by the work of Jack Davis who had a knack for the anti-valentine card. As a group we made an attempt at coming up with some good mean jokes, but after coming up a bit short on the brainstorming side of things we individually came up with some jokes later. I then chose a joke and made a little comic for a card using india ink and a brush. Was a great learning experience for me being that india ink is a new medium that i am very unfamiliar with.

Hello again,
After getting a professional colleague of mine to give me some criticism on my previous post I went back to the drawing board to redesign my composition. In this post I included my second set of thumbnails and the resulting final vector poster.
Pay It Forward
A group of colleagues and I were recently given the opportunity to create poster options for the Pay It Forward movement at Mohawk College. If you aren't familiar with the concept of paying it forward, the idea is to do kind things for people on a whim without any need for the other person to reciprocate. The idea is that if you do something nice for someone they may in turn pay that favour forward and do something nice for someone in the future.
We began by taking a few minutes and writing down some genuinely selfless acts that either we have done, we knew someone had done or that we thought would be nice.
Each of us then created a thumbnail of a poster using the list as inspiration.
As a group we then agreed on one thumbnail that stood out to us. For some additional input we had a non bias friend take a look at the thumbnail and give us their input and suggestions. After this we discussed what style of poster we would like to use for inspiration and we had chose minimalist posters.
The previous images are a small handful of what I saw while doing a quick internet search.
I then began doodling trying to get comfortable with drawing hands holding coins and parking meters.
After sketching I decided to try and work out some possible compositions for the poster. I chose to move forward with the eighth thumbnail on the sheet.
I put together this pencil composition including the Mohawk College logo as well as the "Pay it Forward" logo. I also include quick notes for myself for possible colours when I go to bring this into Adobe Illustrator and attempt to vectorize it next week.
Nefarious
Myself and a few peers created some quick little sketch comic strips by each doodling in the first frame then passing the comics along until they were completed. An exercise to try and get some creative juices flowing.
I chose a character that popped out at me and used it to challenge myself to use and become more familiar with sketching digitally using a tablet.
We had based our original doodle comics on the most recent word of the week from Illustration Friday. I decided to combine the word nefarious and the chosen character to create a little faux skateboard brand for fun.
I then reimagined the chosen character Dr. Nefarious still exploring the functions and brushes within Photoshop.
Then began noodling around with creative type. Looking to create a simple landscape skateboard deck graphic.
This is about as far as I had gotten. I intend to take this a little farther by adding colour and placing the graphic on an image of a blank deck for reference sake.
Design Exercise with Friends
A handful of creative partners and I took part in a conceptual design exercise. We began by quickly sketching items from a grocery store flyer.
We then passed our sketchbooks to the person beside us and challenged ourselves to take one of the items that the previous person had drawn and create a few web page thumbnails. The only stipulation being that the word "Invention" be included somewhere.
Again passing the books to the next person we took the best thumbnail on the page and recreated it again as a website this time attempting to do something outlandish with our design.
At this point we all took a good look at all of the collective thumbnails that were created and each chose one that stood out to us personally. I chose the above image because I enjoyed the placement of the large lemon and how it was cropped.
Using the chosen thumbnail as inspiration we then challenged ourselves to create a more detailed pencil comp of a website. This time while still including the word "Invention" the website also had to be Steampunk themed.
