Rocky knows they'll be experiencing 2g once Grace is living on Erid, and wants Grace to go faster, but Grace is questioning his ability to handle the 2g (the doubts are creeping in if he can handle Erid. Maybe he'll have to live in orbit)
(they would need more fuel, but Weir already vastly undercalculated what they'd need, so what's a little more? Maybe eridians filled their astrophage with more power when they were breeding their fuel. Maybe the astrophage at 40 Eridani evolved to have a higher energy storage capacity than the astrophage at Sol)
The Eridians aren't like, a utopic society of extremely nice people who unilaterally hate Stratt for forcing Grace onto the Hail Mary. They definitely understand Stratt's trolley problem math, they don't think it's right but to them Earth's mass extinction deadline was near instant compared to their own. An Eridian child born the moment astrophage reached Earth's solar system would barely be ready for grade school by the time most life on Earth went extinct, with the exception of whatever hangs out in hydrothermal vents these days. They get that Stratt's actions saved her species just as much as they get that forcing Grace onto the ship was murder.
What they don't get is why Stratt had to put the last hope for humanity in the Eridian Torment Nexus to do that.

Grace did teach Rocky swears, is the thing. When Grace starts crying in the last chapter, Rocky says, and I quote, "I haven't seen that in a long-ass time." Eridians do not have an ass. That is either an Eridian swear Grace randomly assigned an English equivalent for, or it's an English swear Rocky made up an Eridian word for.
I wonder if in this translation the word for "ass" refers to the eating hole (aka the waste removal hole) because if so it'd likely be significantly worse as a swear than "ass" sounds in English in the same way the word Cunt is worse in the US than the UK despite technically being the translation.
Since, you know, it's extremely gross for an eridian. Much more stigmatized than shitting at least so it seems.
Probably! it's possible that grace is just assigning it as "ass" in English and the direct translation would be "mouth," since Eridians basically have a jellyfish situation going on and we call the jellyfish's opening its mouth as well. Basically the same principle as how a lot of anime will insert the word "bastard" in the English version to get people to read it as a swear, when the literal translation is just "you (derogatory)"
If Yao and Ilyukhina lived, i still think they would have eventually started sharing clothes. After some time has passed, Yao is in Grace's fox cardigan, Grace is in Ilyukhina's skirt, and Ilyukhina is wearing Yao's bucket hat. And so on and so forth until laundry becomes practically communal.

- fire and war are strongly associated in many, many different mythologies. after all, fire = passion, aggression, rage, energy; a yang element.
- and we still haven’t gotten a true explanation for his Evol, but here it is! because fire also represents rebirth, the first trailer says rafayel is born a prince, becomes a general to protect his homeland, then dies and is reborn as the martial god to protect his people…
- which sounds a lot like his role as SG AND LSG, no? and his Linkon lifetime? hello? a ruler forced to take up violence and vengeance in the name of his culture?
- the fandom has connected the dots of him being associated with phoenixes for a long time. there’s been several references to him having wings, the obvious themes of rebirth (again) and changing forms, etc etc
the first time seeing his pv and it was an obvious tell that the myth was about his evol, fire, but taking a new concept. but well, im not a raf main so maybe i should step back and just carry on with the boycott.

Grace is having a similar problem to Rocky, Rocky cannot seem to just give Grace his full attention sometimes which is fine mostly but.. well. Grace is a little greedy and a little bored, and one day he’s rummaging around in the storage area, opening boxes he’s never opened before and he finds..

He almost goes to blow on it experimentally but then he pauses.
This is a brilliant scientific opportunity!!
Grace has about a million thoughts at once but it all boils down to this: Can Eridians be trained to react positively to certain sounds?
He knows it’s not exactly the mosttt ethical but. He’s so bored
Grace is immediately plotting, he hides the whistle in his pocket amongst other junk so that Rocky can’t make out what it is but then he realises he can’t just pull it out, it’s not like he can hide it anyway so instead he shows it to Rocky vaguely under the excuse it’s a human instrument yada yada
Rocky isn’t really interested after five ish minutes, and Grace is ecstatic!! He can begin his experiment!!
Rocky is on his side of the bedroom, working on something while Grace talks to him and Grace mentions something he knows will peak Rocky’s interest. The moment Rocky stops what he’s doing and faces Grace, Grace blows on the whistle very lightly and says “thanks, bud!”
Rocky shivers for a moment and Grace is confused, does the sound hurt Rocky?? Before he can ask Rocky says “how Grace make Eridian sound??”
Grace fumbles, and blurts out “human instrument, remember? Don’t worry about it.” Rocky somehow makes a gesture that gives Grace “furrowed eyebrows” feeling, but Rocky drops it and Grace figuratively breathes a sigh of relief.
And so he continues on with his experiment, after awhile it’s not just when Rocky turns his attention to Grace, he’ll do it after Rocky does something favourable at ALL (turning his attention to Grace, helping Grace with something, etc)
Grace choosing his method of reward to be praise because well, Rocky is a sucker for it even if he won’t admit it/take the compliment. And more importantly, whenever Grace praises him he’ll usually react in someway (happy trilling, jazz hands) and that’s EXACTLY what he wants!! The response shows whether or not the experiment worked after all.
Rocky is a bit suspicious of Grace, he has a feeling that maybe Grace has caught onto his own evil doings (see post above) but well. He’s not exactly complaining.
After about a week or two of this, Grace decides to finally end this and test it out!! He’s too excited to wait any longer.
Rocky was just sitting idly when Grace blew the whistle, and as Grace expected Rocky bounces for a moment, trilling like Grace just said something particularly nice before pausing and glaring at Grace.
“Grace tricked Rocky!!” He fumes, and Grace immediately bursts into laughter, dropping the whistle by his side and curling up in his bed from how hard he’s laughing.
“I knew- I knew it would work!!” Grace struggles to say in his fit of laughter
“Grace do this for revenge?? When did Grace figure it out?!” Rocky demands, stomping his foot in question.
I’m always surprised I don’t see more fics where Grace is trying to illustrate concepts of sight to Rocky using models. Of course Rocky can use his screen reader to hear what is on a screen, but there are other routes Grace could do to help Rocky experience the phenomenon better.
On Erid, after Grace is back to semi full health, consider:
-In his biodome, Grace hangs small rocks from the ceiling to let Rocky ‘visualize’ what it’s like to look up at the night sky and see space
-Grace creates different scenes of earth back home, using different textured things to simulate what it would be like to be in those environments and see those colors
- Rocky asks him about the Earth objects they see in the shows and movies they watch, so Grace makes models of earth objects
I think Stray is starting to take over my mind and heart in the same way Cyberpunk 2077 has for years
where even when I'm not engaging with it (watching playthroughs, since I've never actually played Stray), it sneaks its way in with this intense unfulfilled yearning fondness
Obviously, this means I should combine them.
Cat that isn't free from experimentation in the dystopia that is Cyberpunk, gets the mind of a dead rocker implanted in their head. They're going through a city tiered by class, full of androids, tech junk, and violence. They understand the human in their head (and the androids), because it's gradually updating their mind/brain to something more human
(which could be viewed similarly to cyberpsychosis, and transitions to "more artificial, less human/alive" — they're losing their natural state, in a destructive shift towards something that could be considered "greater" than what they were)
