What is there to say about Herbert Fitzgerald? Well, for one thing he'll tell you not to call him Herbert. That's what his mother calls him and unless you're a snobbish, upper-middle class English woman who's far too concerned with how much money he makes in life, then you probably won't quite be able to sound disapproving enough to pull off a decent impression of her anyway. The same goes for being called by his last name, though that's less to do with his mother and more because being addressed solely as ‘Fitzgerald’ churns up ugly reminders of his private school days, consequently sending a full-body shudder through him every time. ‘Fitz’ is fine, though. Literally any one of the long list of nicknames he bears will do, up to and including ‘the weird boat dude’ (he can thank a group of obviously high and incredibly enthusiastic frat boys for that one).  What else is there? Oh! He's lived in Aluma Lake since he was nineteen—a large contributor to that aforementioned motherly disapproval. It was only supposed to be a one off trip during a gap year, but it's such an easy place to fall in love with, isn't it? His love of sailing and scenery combined with the vast distance between himself and a father whose default expression when looking at him can only be described as ‘contemptuous’ is the perfect recipe for a happy life. After all, it's much harder to get pressured into becoming an accountant when there's an entire ocean in the way. Besides, there are boats here. Reading has a sad lack of them. You know what they say... “born to be a mid-century sailor, stuck in a soul-sucking city surrounded by sad concrete and vapid, joyless family members.” That old classic. Aluma Lake is the opposite of everything he grew up with. Quaint, beautiful, and filled with warm people who accept (if not understand) his eccentricities. Here he gets to spend his day giving tours to the town's more curious visitors and babbling about his favourite subjects without being told to shut up (most of the time, anyway) and he gets paid for it! Nothing but upsides to it. His homely shack on Littleshore Island is a darn sight better than the torture he's sure Oxford University would've been and it's blissfully free of any mathematics too.
