your phone buzzed just after eleven.
you glanced at the screen.
ron 💞: outside
no “hey”, no “my name is”, no explanation. just “outside.”
you smiled before typing back.
you: that’s not how invitations work.
three dots appeared.
ron 💞: wasn’t an invitation
ron💞: hurry up
you shook your head, laughing to yourself as you slipped on a hoodie and quietly headed downstairs.
the second you stepped outside, you heard it. the deep growl of his Porsche echoed down the street before you even saw it. the pink 911 GT3 RS sat at the curb, headlights glowing against the pavement.
ronaldo leaned against the driver’s door, keys twirling around his finger. “there you are.”
“you texted me two minutes ago.”
“it felt longer.”
“you are so dramatic.”
“i’ve been saying that.”
“you’ve been waiting for two minutes.”
“it was the worst two minutes of my life.”
you rolled your eyes before walking over. “so…”
you looked between him and the car. “where are we going?”
he opened the passenger door for you. “get in.”
“ron.”
“trust the process please” he begged.
“there isn’t a process.”
“yes there is.”
“you made it up.”
“i absolutely did.”
laughing, you climbed into the passenger seat. the door shut with a satisfying click, the car rumbled back to life.
within seconds, you were pulling onto the empty road.
L.A looked completely different at night, traffic had disappeared, storefronts were dark.
streetlights reflected across the windshield while music played quietly through the speakers.
for a while, neither of you said much, he always seemed calmer when he drove.
one hand rested on the steering wheel while the other tapped absentmindedly against the center console with the beat of the music.
you watched the passing lights.
“so…” you finally said. “you gonna tell me where we’re going?”
“no.”
“you don’t know, do you?”
he looked over for half a second. “i know exactly where I’m going.”
“really?”
“yep.”
“then where?”
“…forward.”
you laughed. “you are lost.”
“i’m exploring.”
“that’s just a nicer way of saying you’re lost.”
“i’m making memories.”
“you missed the turn.”
“i meant to.”
“you absolutely did not.”
he smiled to himself. “you talk a lot.”
“please, you like it when I talk.”
“i tolerate it.”
“liar.”
“…maybe.”
after another fifteen minutes, the houses disappeared, the salty smell of the ocean drifted in through the cracked window.
you turned toward him. “…the beach?”
he shrugged. “i figured it’d be nice.”
“that’s why you’ve been acting mysterious?”
“i wanted it to sound cooler.”
“it didn’t.”
“i know.”
he pulled into a quiet parking lot overlooking the water, there were only a few other cars scattered nearby, the waves crashed softly against the shore.
you climbed out first, stretching your arms over your head. “it’s pretty.”
“i know.” he walked around to stand beside you.
“you come here a lot?”
“sometimes.”
“by yourself?”
“mhm.”
you looked at him. “i didn’t know that.”
he shrugged. “it’s quiet.”
that made sense.
for someone who spent so much of his life surrounded by cameras, notifications, and people talking over one another, quiet probably felt rare.
“you wanna walk?”
you nodded. “yeah.”
the sand was cool beneath your shoes as the two of you wandered toward the shoreline.
you weren’t really talking, just pointing out random things.
a dog running along the beach, a couple trying, and failing to fly a kite at night, someone fishing off the pier.
eventually, your hands brushed, neither of you reacted.
a few more steps, then again.
without thinking, you slipped your hand into his, he glanced down for the briefest second, a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
he didn’t say anything.
he just adjusted his grip so your fingers fit comfortably between his, like it had always belonged there.
“i’m hungry,” he announced.
you laughed. “we’ve been here ten minutes.”
“i’ve had time to think.”
“you think with your stomach.”
“i think efficiently.”
“you think expensively.”
“that’s also true.”
a few minutes later, he came back from a food truck with two orders of fries and a couple of drinks.
“you bought way too much.”
“you’ll help.”
“i know you.”
he handed you one of the containers before sitting on the curb facing the water, you joined him.
for a while, the only sounds were the waves and the occasional seagull.
he stole one of your fries.
“you have your own.”
“yours are better.”
“they came from the same basket.”
“they’ve ot your seasoning.”
you stared at him. “that might’ve been the worst thing you’ve ever said.”
“i’ve definitely said worse.”
“that’s true.”
you bumped his shoulder.
he bumped yours back.
“you know,” you said quietly, “you never actually told me why you wanted to come here.”
he looked out at the water for a moment before answering.
“i don’t know.”
“you don’t know?”
he shrugged. “i was driving earlier.”
“mhm.”
“and i kinda just wished you were there.”
you smiled to yourself. “so you picked me up.”
“so i picked you up.”
“that simple?”
he looked over at you. “yeah.”
“you didn’t have some big plan?”
“no.”
“you just wanted company?”
he nodded once. “i like hanging out with you.”
it was such a simple sentence, he said it so casually, like it wasn’t anything special, maybe that’s why it meant so much.
you rested your head against his shoulder.
he smiled without looking at you. “you comfy?”
“mhm.”
“good.”
“you know…”
“what?”
“i think this is my favorite date we’ve been on.”
he raised an eyebrow. “this counts as a date?”
“you picked me up, drove me to the beach, bought me food, and we’re watching the ocean together.”
he thought about it for a second “…yeah, I guess it does.”
you laughed. “what?”
“i don’t know.”
he reached over, intertwining your fingers with his again. “i just think everything’s more fun when you’re there.”
the waves rolled onto the shore, the ocean stretching out in front of you as the two of you sat there without a reason to rush back, the fries were cold by now, the drinks had lost their fizz, but neither of you cared enough to move.
the night wasn’t special because of the car, the beach, or the food, it was special because it was simple. just him, you, and a few extra hours he got to spend with you.
