Monday, November 25: Satanic Rites, “Hit and Run”
Satanic Rites put out the “Hit and Run/Live to Ride” single on Heavy Metal Records in 1981 at the height of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and the double A-side epitomized its era. “Hit and Run” in particular had the verve and unpretentious enthusiasm that powered concurrently released material by Jaguar, but for some reason couldn’t capture the same attention. It was a fun track, and not at all demonic- Satanic Rites probably chose that name for more for shock value and attention than anything else. This fit the NWOBHM ethos to a tee, and perhaps a bit too much so since the era’s major acts had already taken hold by then. Perhaps that was why the band ended up switching gears a few years later, bringing in Deborah Webster on vocals and moving towards a more mainstream sound on their two studio albums.
