L didnât understand the situation that A was in, not fully, so he couldnât really compare it to his own. He was the original, he had never really competed against the other children at the orphanage for some all powerful position, a title. But what he did know was that, being who he was, often left him lonely and unhappy.
Being such a superb detective was great, L couldnât thinking of doing anything else, but because of it he didnât have many friends. Noâ not even friendsâ just people to talk to, period. He felt alienated because of his looks, mannerisms and mind, which were all products of his lifestyle.
Just imagining a child having this kind of lifestyle made him nauseous.Â
He wouldnât wish these feelingsâ these thoughts, on anyone.Â
So obviously the answer surprised him. In fact he was so surprised that he couldnât conceal the shock on his face. Maybe it was the honesty in his voice. He could instantly tell that he wasnât lying, though there was something in his voice. Hesitation, maybe?
"I-â He began in response, scrambling for the words, "thatâs good, Iâm glad to hear it. Though, as Iâm sure you noticed, I am surprised. You must be tougher than me.â L gave a small smile to the boy. He hoped that it could convey how proud he was. It wasnât easy to grow up in an orphanage, especially one thatâ like A had pointed outâ was more that a school.Â
Regarding the question he licked the remaining smears of chocolate off his questions, allowing him time to think. âWellâŚ.first of all I eat. A lot. Sugar, sugar, sugar. Cake, cookies, truffles, everything. It can be easy to forget about eating when your busy, but it helps.â He promised with a chuckle to himself. He really loved sweets.Â
"But more seriously, I just go over everything I know.â He found comfort in the facts, things he knew for sure. "When I canât go forward, I go back, review everything, several times, until Iâm sick. Then I keep doing it. Because almost always there is something I missed. Some little, minor detail that helps out. Or It just helps give me some inspiration."Â
L hoped that he could be of help. He wanted to live up to the expectations that were placed on him. He wanted to give some wise insight, some kind of advice. It was much easier to ask questions than answer them.
"Okay, so youâre happy. But..is detective work really what you want to do? You donât feel forced into it, at all?â
