Very cool of Ryan Gosling to be Ex-Mormon. Makes me like Project Hail Mary even more
Very cool of Project Hail Mary to use real Astrophotography images in them end credits
health isn't a virtue.
people still go around acting like they've done something good in order to be able bodied and healthy. that they worked for it, that it's due to their moral fibre or good upbringing or self control. they genuinely, on some level, believe that they are a good person solely based on the strength of their physical abilities. they will resist the fact that it is largely down to chance that they were able to maintain such health. whatever they think they've built from scratch, the building blocks were already handed to them. not because they're more worthy of it, just by luck. and they really think they're worth more based on that sheer luck. i've met disabled people worth a hundred of the healthiest ableds alive.
Ignoring luck is dumb, but claiming that health is entirely based on sheer luck is an extremely corrosive worldview. There are dozens of choices you make every day, every week, every month that contribute to your overall health and functioning. It's good to be healthy and it's good to make healthy choices and you do in fact have a lot of control over whether you are able bodied.
sounds like someone is mad you don't have a lot of control over whether you are able bodied
When my spine got worse I had been vegan for 3-4 years, I was strength training 6 days a week, waking up at 5:30 after sleeping 8 hours, eating a high protein and high fiber diet, and I didn't drink or smoke at all. I still ended up needing another spine surgery, and in the two years it took for it to be approved, I lost all of that muscle and strength.
None of us have any real control.

Having scoliosis is funny because they’re like would you rather have a crooked back or five billion nails bashed into your spine and I’ll be like yeah I’ll do the second option sure
It's insane that these are the only two options for most people.
Schroth PT took a long time to get FDA approval as standard of care for scoliosis patients with curves <45°—possibly (likely) because long spinal fusion surgeries make insurance companies and hospitals a lot of money (and let's be real, they also come with follow-up surgeries for a significant fraction of patients). Schroth is the only scoliosis intervention with substantial evidence that it can reduce your spine curve (no guarantee, but there are cases where it did).
Scoliosis also primarily affects teenage girls, so there's a medical misogyny conversation to be had here too.
I was diagnosed at 60° so there was never another option for me, but if you can avoid surgery with bracing and Schroth, DO IT. I'm getting a follow-up surgery in a week because my first surgery gave me adjacent segment disease.
thinking about how Stratt calls Grace a coward for not wanting to die and go on the mission and how Grace says he could ruin the mission and condemn everyone on Earth just to spite Stratt but as soon as he's given the choice between sacrificing all of Erid so he can live or killing himself to save it he gives up his life in a heartbeat
It's because he finally had someone worth sacrificing himself for!!! That's the whole point of the story! Compassion and empathy and love are abstract ideals we can try to live up to, but unless you genuinely do not value yourself, it is very hard to give up your life for someone else. BUT if you love a specific person, it's a simple (not necessarily easy) decision.
Grace did not have anyone before Rocky. First, he had to rediscover the best parts of himself. He had to remember that he was curious and excited about all the possibilities of what could be. Then, he had to connect with someone who cared enough about him to risk their life for him. Then, he was able to see all of what he COULD BE. He could see that he was capable of risking great pain (and later, even a slow death via starvation) just to ensure the person he cared about would survive.
Life is good because it lets us make connections. It is good because there are friends. It is worth sacrificing because real, tangible, love is the most important thing. It can turn the most cowardly, avoidant, self-serving person into a hero.
can he please have a break
Disney really didn't need to give Dana more reasons to hate them but by god they gave her some anyway

I'm vegan for the animals, but every time I see news articles about climate change, I also remember how if you suggest even eating less animal products people freak out as if you'd suggested eating their own pets. And then I feel kinda...angry and disappointed. Even if you don't care about animals (and you should), the time to start cutting back is now.
to raise money, Wikipedia should do that thing CNN did where they sold shirts with headlines on them. I would kill for a shirt that had the article title and Wikipedia layout for Homosexuality in Medieval Europe
