are you using the built-in sideimage function or just displaying them as normal images? the sideimage function automatically places them in front of the text box! https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/side_image.html 

as for how to change the gui for the textbox, just go into the gui folder in the game folder and open the textbox.png file in your art program. you can crop it, change the color/opacity, or give it a different shape there! ^_^

here i’m using both sideimages (on the right) and normal images (on the left) in order to change the character’s position when they’re speaking!

hi! it’s not an intrusive question, don’t worry anon! i’ve thought about pursuing an md-phd-- i’d like to do medical research, but as that’s such a competitive and intensive field, i might reconsider that in a few years. regardless, though, i’m very interested in pursuing research! i’ve done some volunteer and internship work with a group that’s studying the effects of poverty on the human microbiome! i found that stuff super interesting and i’d like to pursue it further, i am captivated by the impact of social inequalities on human biology... 

my apologies if i didn’t answer your question exactly, but i don’t know if i’m far enough along with my education to have a clear idea of my future... ^_^;
