Mary Ann Rathfon “The most popular retort seems to be that Secretariat did set the track record in each of the Triple Crown races and that seems a fair measure when setting criteria for the “greatest horse ever.”
Christopher Duganberry “By now, he has passed the sixteenth pole, with only seventy-five yards to run, and the crowd senses the record too. Turcotte looks at the teletimer blinking excitedly and sees 2:19, 2:20. The record is 2:26 3/5. The colt has a chance to break the record in all three classics….an unprecedented feat…” William Nack, The Making of a Champion, ‘75

The birthplace of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, located in The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County, was named to the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service.
Cozmic One
They turned for home and I was prepared for somebody coming, because I’ve gone through this so many times. I was just hoping, for once—I could tell by the eighth pole that it was going to happen. All I did was just take in the crowd. The crowd was just thundering and I was enjoying the call, and the crowd, and the noise—everything happening. Thirty-seven years—that little horse, he deserves it.

Mubtaahij has never raced on the anti-bleeding medication Lasix, and he will run without it in the Kentucky Derby, becoming the first horse in 10 years to do so.
John Henry and his lifelong groom Jose Mercado sharing a final moment on the plane, before John Henry would be led down the ramp and into the van waiting to take him to the Kentucky Horse Park, where he would remain for the rest of his days.

The elegant Florence Nightingale
Born in 1922, Florence Nightingale was from the first crop of Man o’ War. Her dam was an unraced mare name The Nurse, who boasted a pedigree including not only super stallion Hanover, but also British wonder St Simon, and Correction, the full sister to champion Domino.
Florence herself was a tall, sleek filly with a powerful stride. Despite her good looks and sterling pedigree, she won only five races from her career 34 starts. Still, she was considered one of Man o’ War’s earliest star offspring, especially after her impressive and front-running win in the 1925 Coaching Club American Oaks
At the start of the CCAO, Florence Nightingale jumped to an early lead that she never relinquished. It was noted that “she won, hard held, by four or five lengths”, and her time of 2:17 3/5 was one of the fastest times in the history of the race. Detractors claimed that she had beaten a weak field, which had been without two of the biggest 3-year-old fillies of the year, Maid at Arms and Blue Warbler. Nevertheless, Florence Nightingale ended up sharing championship honors with Maid at Arms, who also happened to be another Man o’ War filly
As a broodmare, the tall mare failed to impress. Of her three registered foals, only one had real impact. Her only daughter, Knight’s Nurse (by Bright Knight), was matched with British champion Bahram in 1944, and the resulting colt was called Bovard. At three, Bovard won the Louisiana Derby before finishing third in the Preakness Stakes
