Brigitte Bardot has certainly been controversial because of some of her statements, but she also comes from a different era one that is difficult to fully understand from today’s perspective. Society has changed extremely fast. Some people were, and still are, in denial about these changes and resist them. They tend to be less tolerant of anything that does not resemble what they consider “traditional” France.
I consider myself open-minded... But being truly open-minded also means having enough distance to recognize that other people’s limitations can stem from their generation, their upbringing, their cultural background, and their own fears or comfort zones. That does not make those views right or acceptable but it does make it overly simplistic and just as limited to judge without taking these factors into account. Criticizing without nuance will always be the easiest choice.
I don’t personally agree with everything she has said, but her statements did not change the course of the world anyway.
She should be allowed to be acknowledged for what she actually accomplished during her life.
