grandma passed away today. 98 years old, surrounded by family, painless, and at peace. these last few years have been rough on her and as hard as it is to see her go, i’m relieved that her suffering is over.
i remember her telling me years ago that she had been so fulfilled seeing not only her grandchildren grow up, but also seeing her great-grandchildren grow and mature. she told me then that she was ready whenever god called her.
she lived through the great depression, world war two, through raising her sister when her parents couldn’t do the job, caring for a husband with ptsd, and outliving three of her ten children. through it all her heart never hardened one bit. despite all of the hardship and suffering she witnessed and experienced, her love and her care for others only deepened.
i’m blessed to have been able to spend her last night at home with her, and to share her last cup of coffee with her. to see her in the hospital and for her to have woken up long enough to say goodbye. she waited for all of her surviving children to make it to her bedside before letting go. she died as she lived, serving others. i love you grandma 💚
