The time of the market is a short event in the city, it livens up the public space, creating movements, colors, sounds, and exchanges between inhabitants and sailers.
However, when the market leaves the place, spaceĀ stays as a "non-lieu", an empty space hardly usable and friendly for daily public life.
How can the place of the market keep this dynamics of exchanges, links, movements, life, in a permanent way?
An architecture of social link
We chose the city center of Ivry sur Seine, a city located in the south suburb of Paris,Ā at the first time because of its singular architecture, and also because of the philosophy strongly linked to this architecture.
In 1970', city hall of Ivry sur Seine decided to redevelop the city center, in order to propose new quality housing for everyone.
Initially thought by Renaudie to welcome a socio-cultural center, the Place Voltaire is situed in the center of the area, a crossroads between the different buildings and ways. However, this place isnāt currently very busy. There is no equipement for having a rest, and the place Voltaire seems to be a still void in the urban infrastructure.
Place Voltaire has the advantage of to be protected of traffic noise that surround it, thanks to higher building of Voltaire estate. That is a more intimate space, reminding traditional villages places, where intimate and public space meet.
The bar and the restaurant overlooking the place leave guess the possibility to liven up the place with more convivial activities, of relax, of meeting,...
Intentions
- Emphacizing the social and community spirit which is very characteristic of Ivry, by reinforce the dynamic of social links, in creating a real place of exchanges and community initiaves, which refers to links on a larger scale, spatial and temporal.
- Create sustainable and temporary structures able to welcome several types of activities, animating the place among different rythms, like different rythms of a heart beating, in order to make the place Voltaire be permanently alive.
Normal activity :
Sustainable equipements allow people to have a rest, meet each others, have a talk, picnic, have lunch, to create a convivial place, like a traditional village place, where public space and intimate spaces are meeting through to the terrasses looking down on the surrounding of the place.
Market days :
In connection with the market of city center standing up on the place in front of the city hall each tuesday morning, friday morning and wednesday between 4PM and 8PM, the new market of place Voltaire welcomes a part of the preexisting market which were going over on the little street next to the city hall, allowing to keep an easy circulation. The market of place voltaire proposes also organic foods, which is a current request from the inhabitants, and also a way to give a distinctive feature to this market and attract people from adjacent cities.
Days of AMAP :
Around Ivry, four AMAP are currently developing their activity : they are groups of farmers which sell their products by a system of commands of baskets. They would find thanks to the place voltaire a way to become known and create links with the inhabitants, by coming once or twice a week.
Garden days :
Twice a month, a Ā«garden dayĀ» will be organized on the place Voltaire. People could come and barter plants,seeds, from gardens and parks around the place, and share advices about gardening, and organize groups (maybe with schools) for taking care of the shared terrasses and green spaces which are currently neglected.
Events :
More ponctually, the place Voltaire could become the place of an event, like debates, little concerts, exhibitions or activities proposed by the numerous associations of Ivry.
