but majora's mask will tell you that it's okay.
you will help as many people as you can, but not because you have to. it's the prime ethos of the game, in fact. the developers knew that four dungeons left much to be desired, and populated the world of termina with the intricate daily schedules and woes of its residents. many will agree that a playthrough without collecting all the masks is hardly the completed game at all, even though a majority of the masks aren't required to reach the ending credits. this isn't even coming at what constitutes as "complete" from a completionist angle-- these are not heart pieces, weapon upgrades or collectibles. it's the story. they're entirely optional but make up arguably more than half of the game's narrative, and that is by design.
you help them, you reset time, and they'll forget you.
but you'll carry that memory with you, becoming stronger with every soul you've touched. you become the fierce deity, the entity whose mask contains the memories, hopes, and dreams of everyone in termina.
you didn't have to spend time learning their routine, becoming intimately familiar with their lives and problems for even just a chance at easing their sorrows. the game doesn't tell you to do this. a tree doesn't tell you do to this. tatl doesn't tell you to do this. a prophecy doesn't obligate you. it's only a salesman that needs his mask back in 3 days, 3 souls to be healed, and 4 giants to be reunited. most everything else from then on is of your own volition.
you'll do it because you know it's the right thing to do. because the true spirit of heroism is acting on the goodness of your heart, not just playing the role in a goddess' legend.
it's more than the swordsmanship. it's more than the adventure. sometimes it's helping two sisters and their cows on their farm. sometimes it's helping a couple torn apart by a curse say their wedding vows to each other seconds before end of the world.
and all that being said, twilight princess' "the hero of time goes on to wallow in misery of his deeds being forgotten" is the absolute least inspired direction nintendo decided to take on this character. it's baffling that they somehow forgot that they made an entire game that already dissects this notion in much more profound and loving detail. and that they felt the need to bring back this character at all, after they'd already made the most beautiful open ended conclusion for link in the series. i debated keeping this addendum in the tags, but i really don't think i can.

But I remember being floored by the implications of HS's being the Hero of Time cuz of MM's theme and I've been pretty much brainrotting on this since. I always thought that concluding "him regretting not being remembered" was a bit basic an interpretation of his character and spent so much time wondering what must've happened in OoT's Link's life for him to end this way. ...long story short, I think HS lived a complicated and nuanced life. Happy and sad moments, Victories and defeats. Ups and downs, light and dark. The life of an adult. OoT is about growing up, and growing up is gray and nuanced...Something something, TP's color scheme and themes are gray, Hero's Shade is gray clad in gold, cheesy symbolism. Something still trying to do good even if one made questionable choices cuz that's true adulthood. Nothing in adult life is black or white.

I always took the Hero's Shade's unrest to be rooted in his inability to pass his knowledge to future generations. He is a weary, battle-hardened soul who died too soon.
Imagine a world where OOT Link is returned to his childhood. He ventures through Termina and learns how to deal with the fact that no one will remember what he's done. But in the back of his mind, he knows that Ganondorf is still a dark presence that must be dealt with.
All we know for certain is that an execution was attempted (and botched). There is no telling WHEN the situation with Ganondorf and his followers came to a head. But maybe Link refused to take up the Master Sword. He wouldn't doom the world to darkness a second time. And if he never opens that door, never breaks that seal, then Ganondorf can never get his hands on the Triforce.
Instead, what follows is a war between Hyrule's allied races and Ganondorf's forces. And we know from the very first dungeon in OOT that Ganondorf is a dark wizard powerful enough to summon vicious monsters and cast other incredibly evil magics. He cast a death curse upon a literal Guardian Spirit! Imagine what suffering he could bring upon the mortals of the realm!
And maybe Link returns to all this. He knew he should have stayed away--kept the Ocarina of Time safely in another land--but he couldn't justify leaving innocent people to whatever might befall them. Couldn't stand the thought of his friends being at the mercy of such evil intent.
Who knows how long things drag on until Ganondorf is finally apprehended and taken to the Arbiter's Grounds. Who knows how long his dark influence infests the world even after he's banished to Twilight. And Link would make sure to be there every step of the way, standing resolutely between the people of Hyrule and that darkness.
Who can say where he was slain. Who can say which was the beast that finally killed him. But when Ganondorf's evil influence begins to keep back into the realm, his spirit stirs. And distantly, he feels an echo of his soul.
Again, he would rise to stand against the tide of darkness. He would go to this new swordsman and teach him to be the hero destiny calls for.
Finally, he could prepare a new generation to carry on the fight--to truly prevail in the face of evil.

The reason: the heroes, Hylia's annoying errand boys, manage to corner him, still wary after his last stunt and keeping their distanse with bows drawn and arrows ready to shoot.
If they didn't have one braincell shared betwwen them and taking turn using it, Dark Link would be dead already. But he also had another ace up his sleeve. The question was which to choose. The tiny pirate he dunked on casually came to mind. Nah! The heroes would be hesistand to attack him but at the same time everyone could fold him into next week, without to much force.
He still need someone than the heroes would be hesitand to attack but also not so weak. Someone quick and agile but also strong, not like the child than is not purpose to be here.
So the best option was the other shorty with the stupid haircut. Surely, there's no way that decision it gonna backfire in any shape or form.

"Where is he? Where is he?" ask Wild, worry in his face, looking frantically around him.
"I don't know"answer Twilight his protege, hand reaching for his Twili Crystal.
"Heroes, calm yourself and focus!" demanded Time. Despite his voice being calm, his face couldn't hide how distaught he was.
The Master Sword flashed in blue in the hands of Sky and by how pale his expression was becoming as Fi continue to flash in alarm, it wasn't a good sign. "He's inside Four!" he said, in the end, letting his words reach his brothers. "And Fi can't do anything to reach him or helm him".
No hero liked the sound of that. They had no idea what the Shadow was planning to do but it definety wasn't good.

"Please, you don't want to do this" he said. The grin on Dark wineded even further. "Your plead for mercy is fallen into deaf ears", he said.
The hero looked at him, confuse. "That was not a plead for mercy! That was a warning!"

"Umm, excuse me, what do you think you are doing?"
Dark turned to look at the source of the voice, only to see them same hero clad in violet, sitting on the couch, eyeing him suspiously with a cup of tea in his hand. Dark looked at the red one then at the violet one, then at the red one and back again, confuse. That was not purpose to happen.

Dark was dumbfounded, to say the least. Both shorties kept staring at him, before the violet one said: "Red, cared to inform Blue we have a visitor?"

"PLEASE, JUST KILLED ME ALREADY", Dark screamed, hoping for the sweet release of death, but at the same time wanting to live and just get away from them. He jsut couldn't stand them anymore. These people didn't act like normal hylians.
The Colors turned their attention to him, with evil grins on their identical faces. Dark regretted saying what he said. "Well.. it seem like the desicion is taken from our hands", said Green. Red raised his Fire rod, Blue pulled out a fucking hammer of all weapons and Vio unscreath his sword.
"Then you are about to lose".
"The one who manage to deal the most damage to Dark, gets all the Ruppes!" challenge Blue. Vio huffed.
"Guys, this not a competion!"
"Didn't Vio junk a bomb at us to get our Rupees?" asked Green. "Didn't you also throw your boomerang to prevent Tingle from getting the Rupee that was worth one thousands?" Blue fired back. Oh my god, there are at it again. There's no salvation. Dark had long accepted his fate, at this point.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" asked Legend.
"You were the one who suggest it" reminded him Hyrule. "Fair point".
The chain had no idea what to do with their passed out member. Non of them wanting to hurt Four, but the same couln't be said for the shadow. So their best idea (it was Legend's idea) was to remove all his weapon and magic items and tie him to a tree. It's been like three hours of them patiently waiting for Four to wake to decide their next move.
The sun sets in the horizon and the shadows started to grow for a moment, but no one payed any mind to it. Until Four started to stirred and lifting his head from his chest. Everyone present immeditially got ready. "Hey, guys", he said with a yawn, like he had just wake up for a nap and was about to asked what was for breakfast.
"Are you okay?" asked Wind, eye him suspiciously, trying to find something different on him. "Just a bit sore, is all", he simply aswered.
"Sky...", said Warriors. Sky nodded. He pulled out the Master Sword and pointed his blade on four. Four tensed, looking alarmed, but calm nonetheless. The sword flashed blue and Sky nodded in understading. "He's clean".
Everyone sigh a collective sigh of relief that they didn't know they were holding. But they quickly turned into another question that had on their mind and pestered their second younger member: "What happened to the shadow?"
"I took care of it," said Four. Well, that didn't sound assuring or answering anything. "Why i am tied up?"

"You will see us again, Sailor".
Those were the last words the captain had told him before he returned to his era. At first, he was confused. There's not a threat anymore, there's not gonna be another adventure with his brothers.
But that single line had filled him with hope. A hope he held into to this day.
A few months had passed, and Link went into another adventure into a Hyrule, which it was familiar to him but different altogether.
It took everyone single cell in his body to figth the urge to run ahead and hug the people he later would called brothers.
But Link just stared at the people in front of him. Warriors was bent down to his knees, so he was at Link's eyes level. He was the same as ever, with the only difference being the green cap he wore on his head. A young child was peeking behind the captain with a familiar yellow fox mask on the side of his head.
Those were not the Warriors and Time he knew. They were just an earlier version of them. A version that they didn't know him.
The thougth made Link's heart skip a beat. He realized that maybe this is how Time and Warriors felt when they saw him.
Both of them always talk about their experiences in the War of Ages and then look at him like they expected him to comment on it, only to be met with a confused stare.
Maybe they thought he was playing a prank on them, and they waited until Wind would get frustrated and drop the act and say something like: "I can't believe you didn't fell for that! I thought i had you! That's not fair!"
Only for it to never happen. And then they realized a little bit too late that their little brother they once knew wasn't him.
He was not the sailor they met at the war. The one who ended up bonding, eating, laughing, fighting, caring with.
He was the same person, just a later version of him. And now the roles were reversed.
Link understood the Captain's and the Old man's sadness at his departure. They were never going to see him again. But he was gonna, and for them, it was gonna be their first meeting.
Fate is a cruel thing.
The sailor forces away the feelings of sadness and confusion who threatened to swallow him whole.
But remnants of his true feelings still linger on his face. He couldn't force his eyes to hide how he truly felt. His ears stayed low, even as he looked into their eyes and introduced himself to them.
Both of the people, who he make memories, happy and sad ones, noticed his mood but didn't comment it.
Despite his mind and logic telling him that these people were not the ones he once knew. Link knew that just like him in their quest, they gonna become both the Captain and the Old man he once knew.
Maybe Link wasn't related to them by the Hero's Spirit, and he was still too young to be a hero of Legend, but he was still a Hero of Courage.
This Hyrule needed help. And he was still going to help his brother defend the land he held so dear.
Maybe they don't know him yet, but he is here now, and he is going to make sure he is the sailor that both Warriors and Time would remember.
