I've been wanting to learn how to draw for a while but I don't even know where I should start. I thought maybe asking for advice from artists I like would be a good first step, so here I am :)
Do you have any tips or recommendations? I know absolutely nothing about art so any kind of guidance I can get is very much appreciated.
Thank you for your time! And never stop creating for yourself!💙
Hiii I'm more than happy to give you tips! (Also, I am a TRADITIONAL ARTIST, most of these were tips written while thinking about drawing on paper, not on digital.)
Principal rule you need to know before everything. You DO NOT need expensive materials at first, a pencil and black pen can do the job just fine!
So, first thing you absolutely need to learn is controlling the pressure of your pencil strokes! Usually while sketching it's ideal to have light lines so they're easier to erase if needed.
Best way to practice is testing all kinds of pressure until you find one that's comfortable for your hand AND doesn't leave a mark on the paper, once you can do that we get to the next essential step!
Practicing fluid motion. That is, resuming a lot, drawing shapes and lines until they're smooth; start with simple straight lines, plain shapes and spirals first then move on to 3D shapes, it might take a while to catch on the perspective of 3D objects but it's alright, don't get frustrated over something you can improve.
That step will help you with making cleaner lines while sketching, as well as making more polished shapes, which is very useful because in everything you draw you'll have to implement shapes!
Next step is creating a mental library of references; you can start by looking at a picture from the internet and trying to copy the object/person in it, while you polish your technique your brain automatically remembers how to do that object (that's why drawing stuff you never drew before feels a bit harder).
Using Pinterest is a good idea to start, folders with stuff you'd want to use as reference later are very useful, I have at least four in different categories! Remember that drawing with references and tracing is not the same thing, don't trace, that'll give you no progress at all.
At first you'll compare yourself a lot, won't like how things turn out and will try to drop it, BUT the thing with art is that the more you redo what you didn't like, the more you improve! Sure you don't have to make a thousand tries in the same day, that'll only make it worse, but always try to redo stuff you didn't quite like the result until you actually like it.
That also applies to finding your style, you should absolutely try following rules from styles you like, eventually you'll end up blending it with your own knowledge about drawing and your style will come out naturally (although it takes A LONG WHILE for some people).
Best thing you do while trying to get into art is seeking reference, ignoring the heavy self criticism and pushing pass the urge to give up! YOU CAN DO IT I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!
I'm happy to help again anytime, good luck!
