2002 Gdańsk Polytechnic stabbing
On June 19, 2002, a violent attack took place at Gdańsk University of Technology in Gdańsk. The perpetrator, 22-year-old student Kamil Putrzyński, carried out the assault as an act of revenge after being accused of cheating during one of his exams by Professor Czesław Stefański. According to reports, the accusation was true, and Putrzyński became increasingly angry and resentful toward the professor in the weeks that followed.
On the morning of the attack, Putrzyński entered the university building armed with an axe. Witnesses later described the situation as chaotic and terrifying, as students and staff suddenly realized what was happening. He confronted Professor Stefański and brutally attacked him, striking him multiple times in the head, neck, arm, and hand. The injuries were extremely severe, and the professor permanently lost one of his fingers during the assault.

Hearing the commotion, the professor’s assistant, Krzysztof Królik, rushed in to help and attempted to stop the attacker. During the struggle, Królik was struck twice in the head with the axe. He suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he died later the same day. His attempt to protect the professor was later remembered by many as an act of courage and self-sacrifice.
The attack finally ended when university employees and nearby staff members managed to overpower Putrzyński using computer cables and physical force until police arrived. The shocking nature of the crime deeply affected Poland and raised concerns about security and violence at educational institutions.
After a lengthy investigation and trial, Putrzyński was convicted of murder and attempted murder. On May 19, 2005, the court sentenced him to 25 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after serving 15 years. The case remains one of the most disturbing acts of violence in the history of Polish universities.
