It's been a few months since you last left his estate. It feels more like a fever dream now yet the pain was still there. Love was something everyone wants but seems impossibly out of reach, especially now. Even as you walked along the bustling streets of New York you still felt that sting in your heart.

You arrive at your penthouse (money had been good lately). Just as you close the door you hear that familiar ping. Looking down at your watch you see a notification. "Private number: new target, sending info now, urgent". Great. You dream of the relaxing evening you could have had if it wasn't for your job. The only reason you had this much money now was because you had taken it upon yourself to be hired by people outside the government, in other terms, the rich and famous. You sigh and put down you're bag to go change.

The two weeks after Oeznik practically told you to fuck off, you threw yourself into work. How else to survive? Bucky and Sam were confused by how differently you were acting and tried to support you the best they could. They didn't know the real truth of what happened. They were now living together, very much in love it seemed. It did make you wonder how it would be to have someone like that for you. To live together. To be happy. To be loved.

It didn't serve you to be sad or maybe even depressed. You reminded yourself that again and again.

The info came through. 10 jones street, Joe Miller, Male. Usually you got more than that. Not even a description or a photograph. Lovely, this is going to be sooo easy then. Grabbing a gun and a silencer you head back out again. You approach your newly bought black motorcycle and put on a helmet. As you do you notice a dark figure behind you. Checking your knives are strapped securely to your body, you start to drive away.

The figure gets into an equally dark are and starts to follow you. He's slow and any regular person would mistake it for a late night worker. They definitely are not. After a few blocks you were sure. Every time you thought you lost them they appeared again. Fuck. It's been a while since something like this happened. Worse they knew where you lived.

So they've done their research. It's not easy to find you. Suddenly your phone rings. It's Sam. Could he pick a worse timing. You're forced to ignore it as you speed along the road. After a while of being followed you stop. This was getting more and more annoying.

After a couple of seconds you see their car in the distance. You slink into the shadows, concealed by the dead of night in a small alley. However, the car drives past ignoring the motorcycle clearly set aside at the side of the road. What?

So much was certain, you were getting paranoid. Your job is dangerous. Any relative of your victims could want to kill you. You release an audible breath. You're safe.

That was the last thing you thought before hearing silent footsteps and feeling something hit your head, hard.

Fuck. Your head was pounding and it was dark. You felt as though being suffocated. And then total blackness again.

You wake, this time it was lighter. "She's awake, why haven't you blindfolded her?"

They sounded mad. You were in deep shit now. The usual Thursday then.

You feel when calloused fingers place a cloth over your eyes. Roughly. Men with big egos liked to scare you, but if you played your cards right, the tables could quickly turn. Those hands fit that description. "I wasn't planning on fucking with anyone today but you clearly have set the tone" you point at the blindfold.

There was a moments silence. "Someone shut her up". You continue to tease "now I like this, please carry on sir" someone in the back coughs quietly. One of the men rips off the blindfold. This was followed by a rough hand slapping the side of your face "Be fucking quiet, you're the one in danger right now, we don't mind hitting girls"

He was asking for it. "You know just what I like then" you smirk. His face was beginning to turn red. As you were taking in his face you could see a brown haired middle aged man standing before you. He looked strong. Two other similar looking men stood behind him. "Miller the boss said not to hurt her". One of them said. The large man in front of you stomped angrily towards you. "We'll say she injured herself when we brought her in, the boss won't know." He pulls a knife. One of your knives!

"We'll see how you like this"

He was leaning in closer and but before he could rest the knife on your cheek, you step on his feet, hard. He lets out a small cry. It was enough time to burn the ropes from around your wrists. The Miller guy was already pointing the knife towards you again but you quickly punch him in the balls, catching him by surprise. He stumbles back gripping his bulge. You catch the knife and cut the ropes around your feet.

The men behind Miller were frozen in place but quickly realised what you were doing. They race towards you but you're fast. Too fast for them. As one was nearly on top of you, you swing at him, knocking him out. Before the second man realises his companion was knocked out you fling the knife towards his chest. He too stumbles and falls.

Men always underestimate women. That is their downfall.

A voice sounds from behind you. You fling yourself around ready to fight. No one was there. It was then you notice the small walkie-talkie sat on a simple wooden table. "..eard some banging from upstairs. Is everything okay?" You stare at it. If you don't say anything they will come. Before you could make a decision it speaks again "shit the boss is nearly here, the girl better be there"

You sprint out of the room, no way you were about to die today. You land in a small dingy hallway. You see stairs leading both up and down. If you go down you were sure to be spotted and since this boss would be here you couldn't risk another fight. So the only way is up. The stairs lead to the flat roof. You realise this must be some random abandoned building in the city. It was very cold outside and stars sparkled in the sky. The crescent moon sat high above, watching.

Luckily you could jump to the neighbouring buildings, thanks to the architectural geniuses of New York. However, before you do you hear a car. You approach the edge and lie down, stomach flush to the ground. You watch as a vintage car pulls up to the side of the block. A man steps out of the drivers seat and opens the passenger door.

Before you get to see the person about to step out you hear a rustle from behind. You whirled your head around. No ones there. You look back down just about seeing a man enter.

Chapter 7

“Y/n what did you do” Bucky said as he and Sam came running over. “He was dangerous, I had no other choice” you lie. Before the two could reply, two members of the Dora arrived, examining Zemos body. “He’s dead”. You say to them. “He’s gone”

“You promised him alive White wolf” the woman speaks turning to Bucky. “However, we have no use of the dead” “Do with him what you wish” the other states. “I will discuss with you later” her eyes never left bucky. You nod as they walk away. “I think you have some explaining to do” Sam turns to you. “I do, ill tell you everything but first I should take him away from here.” you point to Zemos body. “I know who to call”

Buckys phone rings “We need to head back, its urgent, you’re fine here y/n?” “You sound like ive never got rid of a body Bucky” you laugh slightly. “Make sure to talk to us later okay” Sam says before turning to walk towards the airship they came on. After you were positive Sam and Bucky had left you rush over to Zemo. You heart was pounding in silent panic. While checking his wound you reencounter what he happened just moments before.

“I’m sorry” you move the gun pointing at his head, to pointing at his shoulder and pull the trigger. You could see the betrayal in his eyes as he fell backwards to the ground. Quickly you run to him. “It’s going to be okay, its going to be okay” you reassure yourself more than him. At this point his shoulder was bleeding pretty badly. Tears were now streaming down your face but you had to keep calm.

You rummage through your pockets and quickly pull out a vial. This liquid was designed to imitate death itself, it would slow his heart and breathing rate enough to make it seem convincing. As a special agent they supplied you with specialised equipment, including this one. Carefully, you inject it into his neck. It pained you to see him like this, and it made it worst to see him just staring at you, in complete shock. He must think you tried to murder him. He must hate you.

Seconds later he was unconscious and luckily the bleeding seemed to slow too until it stopped completely. The threat of him bleeding out in front of you was now gone. Usually, the serum was useful for neutralising bad guys but it served a different purpose here. Unfortunately, you didn’t have time to take a closer look at his shoulder because you could already hear the footsteps of two men coming towards you.

Returning back to the present you realised Zemo hadn’t moved. You quickly check his pulse. Feeling a distant heart beat you breath a sigh of relief. “Hello is this Oeznik?” You had taken Zemos phone and called his butler. “Your boss is in trouble and I need your help” He agrees to come pick both of you up after you explained what had happened. While you wait you look at the bullet wound. It can’t be too deep as you could see a small piece of metal lodged in his flesh.

You pull off the shirt you were wearing and wrap it around his shoulder. You vaguely remember the first aid training you received when you first started working for the government and knew that any serious wounds needed pressure applied to them. Zemo was growing paler by the minute. Luckily, Oeznik arrived with a pair of medics. You were wary of them. What if they handed him over to the police? All of this pain would have been for nothing.

“They can be trusted” is all he said as they examine Zemos body. “Ive called for a helicopter that will take us to his nearest estate where he will be treated.” The old man put on a good ‘everything is fine’ face but you could see right through him. Everything was not fine. The chopper arrived and Zemo was hurried off onto it. “I think its best if you go back to your friends”

Oeznik is a good man and what he said was not meant to be hurtful, but in the best interest of the Baron. “Your right” you look towards where Zemo laid on the stretcher. Your eyes swam with tears again. Oeznik hands you a business card before stepping on to the helicopter. You watch as it takes of into the sky and disappears in the distance.

Knowing that you couldn’t stay in Sokovia you head for the airport once again. This time more lost than you ever were in your life. Although you weren’t physically hurt, pain still rung out through your body. It felt almost like a fever dream, yet everything was very much real. Could you ever meet his eyes again?

These thoughts spun around your head the whole journey from the airport to your apartment provided by the government. You wondered what you were going to do now. It wasn’t like you could just return to your life like normal. You just shot a (pretty much) innocent man. One you cared about deeply, maybe even fallen for.

No.

You can’t allow yourself to think like that. Not when he probably despises you now. Telling Sam or Bucky that he was alive wasn’t an option either. You were on your own.

The sun had almost set when you receive a call. It was from a number you didn’t recognise. “Hello?” “Y/n its Oeznik” you don’t let the man finish. “Is he okay?” “Yes, the medics operated on him successfully but he’s still unconscious” you feel your whole body relax. He was okay. He was safe. “How long until he wakes?” “That’s the thing we need a sample of whatever you injected into him” “It isn’t a long lasting sedative he should wake up soon” you say slightly panicked again. “We need to know if it will cause any side affects, I’ll call for someone to pick you up and bring you here. Pack some bags” and with that he hangs up.

You never thought about side affects. Worry filled you up again as you started pacing around your home. You knew that today you would not sleep. It would be impossible with the noise in your head currently. So to at least attempt to take your mind off things you do as Oeznik says and pack some bags, only taking the essential clothing items and toiletries. You take one or two of your books and one of your childhood cuddly toys too. Who didn’t still sleep with one anyway?

The plush was a small brown bear, its fur had become matted over the years and it didn’t look brand new anymore but you loved it still the same. If anything, now was the time you were going to need a little extra comfort. You hear your door bell ring.

When you open it you find a random guy standing in front of you. “I’m here for (y/n) (y/l/n)” He takes your bags and you follow him to a black car that waited for you on the side of the road. Once again you head to the airport. It seemed to have become a regular thing in your life now. A private jet was ready for you and it takes of for the estate.

After a couple of hours you arrive. If anything confirmed that Zemo was a Baron, it was this. A large building towered in front of you, intricately decorated in an almost gothic style. It was old and vines grew around a corner of the structure but it still looked well maintained. If it weren’t for your current situation, you would have marvelled at this for a lot longer.

Oeznik opens the grand front doors and invites you inside. The interior was just as beautiful as the outside. It fits perfectly with everything else. Most importantly, it felt homey and welcoming. A guy dressed in uniform takes your bags. “Do you have it?” Oeznik holds out his hand. You hand him the small vial. “Where is he?” “Ill take you to him” He moves towards a large staircase which you gladly follow him up.

He walks across a corridor and finally enters a room. You didn’t look around as your eyes fall immediately to Zemo. He was laying in a large bed that sat against the wall. After Oeznik leaves you alone you carefully move towards him as if making a sound would cause him to shatter like glass. You knell on the ground next to him and reach for his hand that laid beside him. Intertwining his fingers with yours you inspect his face.

The baron looked so calm and at peace. It seemed as if he had just gone to bed to take a nap. All you could think about was how you just wanted him to be ok, you wanted to hug, kiss and apologise to him, but all those things were impossible now. You couldn’t help it as a sense of guilt washed over you. He was like this because of you. You almost killed him. Standing up you lean over the bed and gently press your lips to his forehead. Your hand never left his.

“Y/n you should let him rest” Oeznik enters.
