one thing i've been saying a lot recently and almost believing is '80% of everything is statistical decision theory'. the problem is that eventually, the joke will wear out and become tiresome. based on uncertain conversational signals from other people, i'd like to work out when that's going to happen and curtail the bit in advance. if only there were some mathematical framework that could help here
