Evaluation:
-
Final sanding (outside) and the surface treatment is missing. There is place for correcting the drawer front as it is now a bit too tight. All in all it needs to be done faster.
+
The leg and rail machine joints are precise and strong. Drawer joints are fine and the construction is correct and tight. Finger joints for the box are tight.
Self reflection:
It went a bit slow in the beginning when counting with stock for all the smaller elements. However I have not used any extra pieces of solid ash it is because I had payed extra attention when I worked with machines and used marking for getting the pieces sides and cuts right. I have probably double checked things even when it did not make sense by this I might have wasted some time. Could have been usefull to have one extra piece for the drawer front and for the finger joints. I got one of the pieces a bit loose.
I would like to implement a Gant chart next time before I start the actual woodworkshop process to keep myself a bit tighter to a predicted schedule.
I wanted to practice setting up the spindle moulder and the mortiser alone. After I have got an introduction I had the chance to work with these machines individually when I did the setting on my own from scratch. That was a good way to settle all the new informations.
Besides I focused on using my hand plane for fine tuning the elements and adjusting them together. It paid back with the practice.
There is always place for growing smarter and faster, but all in all I am happy with the result and also the process as I believe that I learn a lot during this course.
The top storage box is cut into two by table saw. That was quite a challenge so the instructor kept an eye on me while cutting. The two sides of the box are joined with narrow brass hinges. Installing hinges with chisel and mallet.

getting there with some small mistakes...
Fitting drawer front to the opening. Glueing the front rails simultaneously with runners by placing the drawer front sized pieces in the drawer opening. Important to pay attention for all the perpendicular angles. They must fit in order to create a smooth drawer slide experience.
Box joint machine work ( spindle moulder) for the top storage box of the furniture. Sanding every inner sides of the elements.
Dry fit, cross dimension check, glueing.
Preparing dovetail and half blind dovetail joints for the drawer. Sanding inner sides, dry fit cross dimension check, glueing.
Remember to count with a small gap for the back element. Make the drawer back 2-5 mm smaller then mark and adjust the dovetails.
Workshop panorama.
Glueing side rails and legs first. Adjusting rails to the legs length by hand planer.
Glueing sides with front and back rails.
Tapering legs with a jig on the table saw. Sanding inner sides of the elements before assembling.
Preparing the drawer construction connections with power tools.
Domino holes for rail under the drawer. Lamello holes for runners.
