Wiping down my dash at the end of an evening, I see your read-more, over-hear your rant in the tags, so I pour you a drink.

So the Spoon Theory is a fundamental metaphor used often in the chronic pain/chronic illness communities to explain to non-spoonies why life is harder for them. It’s super useful and we use that all the time. But it has a corollary.  You know the phrase, “Stick a fork in me, I’m done,” right? Well, Fork Theory is that one has a Fork Limit, that is, you can probably cope okay with one fork stuck in you, maybe two or three, but at some point you will lose your shit if one more fork happens.  A fork could range from being hungry or having to pee to getting a new bill or a new diagnosis of illness. There are lots of different sizes of forks, and volume vs. quantity means that the fork limit is not absolute. I might be able to deal with 20 tiny little escargot fork annoyances, such as a hangnail or slightly suboptimal pants, but not even one “you poked my trigger on purpose because you think it’s fun to see me melt down” pitchfork.

Approach a business and ask for an unpaid internship. Wait until they have you doing free work that benefits the company or that a paid employee should be doing and then report them to the labor board.

 If you’re a manager, don’t leave whether or not a cashier/server gives their number to a guest up to them. Nobody wants to give their number to that creepy person in line who won’t leave them alone. Tell the cashier/server that it is not appropriate to give out their personal info on shift and, if a guest has a problem with that, to come and get you immediately. It keeps young workers from being put into awkward and sometimes dangerous situations. Pro Tip: tell them this BEFORE the situation arises so that they’re prepared ahead of time.

If you’re a manager and you notice a guest who is making a server uncomfortable with repeated visits and personal questions, limit their interaction by stepping in to complete their order or having another person on staff (who is comfortable doing so) take over. If this is a common occurrence, it is YOUR JOB as a manager to have a word with that guest. The server’s comfort comes first over repeated business from guests who are incapable of normal transactions.

Do not pretend to be “cool” with people you are in a position of authority over. Having friends at work is fine and normal, but as a manager, your job only stands if you follow the company rules. Don’t put yourself or them in a position where they confide in you and you are forced to react in a professional capacity. My motto when I was a manager was this– “Is your job done? Then I don’t want to know.” 

There are a lot of things a manager doesn’t have to know. They don’t have to know how you get to work. They don’t have to know what you’re doing later today (in case they need you to stay longer). They don’t need to know what you’re doing on your days off (in case they need to guilt you into coming in.) They don’t need to know who you hang out with or who you’re having personal problems with at work (unless it affects you professionally). They don’t need to know because your personal life isn’t ammo they can use against you at work.

If you avoid conflict, you’re not suited to be a manager. Sorry if that’s disappointing to hear, but you’re not. Food/bev sees a lot of faces in an average day and most of those faces are friendly. Some are not. It is not a server or busser or host’s responsibility to diffuse a tense situation with Karen. It is yours. A server is there to take an order and help guests with a NORMAL experience at your establishment. It is your job to take care of the abnormal cases and solve them to the best of your ability.
