(Bowling Green)—The Wood County Humane Society (WCHS) recently received a grant from the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society (MRFRS) and PetSmart Charities to assist in managing the free-roaming feline population in Wood County. The grant period runs through February 2015 and the grant monies specifically are earmarked for providing free spay/neuter services and rabies vaccines of free-roaming, outdoor cats in the 43402 zip code. The organization’s goal for this pilot program is to spay/neuter 250 free-roaming felines while partnering with Humane Ohio, which is a low-cost, high-quality, accessible spay/neuter clinic in the Greater Toledo Area. The WCHS also hopes that its efforts will provide resources for and promote responsible pet care.

  After the pilot program is completed in February of next year, the WCHS plans to expand the program to include all of Wood County. Expanding the program will depend largely on the organization’s successful fulfillment of the grant conditions for its pilot program, as well as additional fundraising efforts for the cause. The WCHS is accepting donations for their “Spay it Forward” campaign to be able to help assist with future spay/neuter surgeries for free-roaming cats.

  According to Alley Cat Allies, the only national advocacy organization dedicated to the protection and humane treatment of cats, felines can start reproducing at four months of age, and have up to three litters a year. By spaying and neutering just one female and one male cat, area residents will be preventing more than 2,000 unwanted births in just four years. The rewards of spaying and neutering free-roaming cats are worth it, too. Colonies that are involved in Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) diminish in size over time, and their population quickly stabilizes by instantly ending reproduction. TNR relieves cats of the constant stresses of mating and pregnancy, and mating behaviors cease, like roaming, yowling, spraying, and fighting. Cats’ physical health improves, and the cats are vaccinated against rabies. Attempts to permanently remove cats from an area (their home) always fail because of a natural and scientifically-documented phenomenon known as the vacuum effect. In basic terms, whenever cats are removed, new cats move in, or the surviving cats left behind, breed to capacity. This grant will assist the WCHS in its mission to alleviate some of these problems in the 43402 zip code, but only with the support of local residents, as Shelter Manager Erin McKibben reminds. She urges, “Help us to help everyone be a part of the solution!”

Petunia is a tiny ball of grey gorgeousness! She is about 2 years old and was brought to the shelter back in May when her humans moved and could no longer care for her. Petunia can be a bit reserved and shy. She is not one to approach strangers, so she has a difficult time making friends and often is overlooked by visitors to the shelter. But if people approach her, Petunia can be quite charming. She has a lovely personality and enjoys birdwatching, sunbathing, and cuddling on the couch. Moose is an Australian Shepherd mix who likes to be the absolute center of attention. To that end, he would do best in a home without other dogs or cats. He is about 3 ½ years old and he has an abundance of energy. Of course, don’t take that to mean that he is ill-mannered, because Moose can be quite polite and very charming. He is 3 ½ years old and has been looking for his forever home since he was surrendered to the shelter in April. (Bowling Green)—On Thursday, October 30, the Wood County Humane Society (WCHS) will host A Humane Halloween: Howl at the Humane Society. This family-friendly, Halloween-themed event will feature food, fun activities, and animals.

A Humane Halloween will be held at the WCHS Shelter at 801 Van Camp Road, Bowling Green, and will run from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m.

This event coincides with the annual trick-or-treat hosted by downtown Bowling Green businesses. The event is free and all area residents and community members are welcome.

(Bowling Green)—For at least the entire month of October, the Wood County Humane Society (WCHS) once again will be offering a “pick-your-price” adoption event for all felines six months and older. A special $50 adoption special will be offered for kittens as well.

A similar adoption event was held this past summer and was met with great enthusiasm from the public. Shelter Manager Erin McKibben hopes this time around the adoption event will be equally successful.

She said, “There is a great need to help cats in our community, and the faster we can get all animals ready for adoption and into their forever homes, the faster we can help the next group of animals needing our assistance.”

Adoption hours at the shelter, which is located at 801 Van Camp Road, Bowling Green, are Wednesday and Thursday from 12  to 7 p.m. and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. All adoptions include the spay or neuter of the cat, distemper and rabies vaccines, FIV/FeLV test, microchip, and free physical examination at local participating veterinarians. In order to receive the special “pick-your-price” adoption fee, adoptions must be completed same day.

The WCHS, located in Bowling Green, Ohio, is a full-service, no-kill shelter providing care for homeless and abused pets and investigating cruelty complaints in Wood County. In addition, the organization assists Wood County residents with its Safe Haven and food assistance programs, spay/neuter transport, and educational presentations. Abra has been at our shelter since January and we honestly cannot figure out why.  This 6 ½ year-old black beauty has one of the sweetest dispositions that we’ve seen. She loves to cuddle and curl up in laps. She enjoys being petted and will let you scratch her ears for hours on end! She is rambunctious and likes to play with everything from toys to our staffers’ hair. Admittedly, Abra has been through a lot in her short life. She is diabetic and requires a prescription food along with twice daily insulin injections, so she is going to require a very special and loving family that can not only keep up with the cost of her treatment, but also provide the very special care that she needs. Derek and Jeter are brothers who have been together for their entire lives. This pair of handsome Cockapoos was surrendered to the shelter together back in September and has been searching for their forever homes ever since. Brothers Oakie and Duke arrived together at the shelter after their owner passed away. Shelter life has been a huge adjustment for the boys after living in a very quiet home, but both have tried very hard to fit in and adjust to their new lives. Sebastian just recently was returned to the shelter (through no fault of his own) after being adopted and now he’s looking once again for his forever home.
