concept playlists
flawed protagonist trying to be a hero: youāre the protagonist of the story and there are people around you who expect you to be the hero that they need, except youāre doing a poor job at it. with everything thatās going on in youāre life, the last thing you need right now is to save the world from the impending doom but itās written in the stars that only you can prevent the destruction that the villain in youāre story will create and what matters is youāre trying, in spite of everything, you are trying.
villains who know how to dress:Ā tired of the poor treatment theyāve been receiving theyāre whole life, they decide to take matters in their own hands. this villain shares a parallel to your life. they tell you that only they can understand you and tries to implement their philosophical views on you, all while dressing fashionably.
enchanting; serene: youāre laying in an abandoned cathedral, you hear songs and melodies that sounds transcendental. youāre all alone in one of the most beautiful, enchanting places youāve ever seen, and for the first time in youāre life that feels enough. this is the most peaceful youāve ever been and you suddenly cry just thinking about it.
waltzing in castles: youāve attended an annual ball that takes place in the largest castle known to humankind. youāre wearing your best dress, eating great food, looking at gorgeous arts, and dancing in your best shoes.
dancing in your bedroom: you had a bad day, you turn the music on and dance the night away in your bedroom. youāre shaking off all the bad moments that occurred today and you feel this sense of relief weighing in. it feels good to just dance like youāre having the time of your life.
**for panic attacks: if youāre ever experiencing a panic attack, i created a playlist that i hope might help in some way.
itās the end of the world as we know it:Ā the world is now in dystopian. whilst people in specific areas are doing their best to survive in a world that does not benefit them, there are people in other regions who thrive off of it. the world that we once knew may have ended, but that doesnāt mean capitalism died with it. while there are people living in such luxurious state, youāre here fending for yourself. youāre sick of the injustices and you yearn for a better life than this. a revolution is coming and songs will be sung about it.
there'sĀ magic within us: you wake up to a place youāve never been, and you suddenly possess a power thatās meant for you. youāre suddenly thrown into a reality of mystical creatures and places.
once upon a dream: circumstances has led you to write letters to someone you donāt know who ā until you soon discover itās someone you despise, or someone youāre supposed to despise. through these letters youāve fallen in love with that person and them to you. the problem is they donāt know that it is you whom theyāre corresponding theyāre letters to and it is through your insecurity that prevents you from revealing, creating a conflict that makes them believe itās someone else. someone who isnāt you. whatās next?
i love you. most ardently: you finally know what they mean when they sing songs of falling in love. youāre finally in love and youāre loved back. you want to walk through grasslands just thinking about it.
literature & good music: youāre reading a good book whilst listening to good music and youāre having a dandy time.
exploring paris: youāre in paris. this is the first time youāve ever traveled in your whole life. you roam around historic places from day to night. you continue to observe your surroundings, imagining the lives of people living in paris. everything feels wonderful.
Hereās my take on the banners of the twelve empires! Been working on this one for a while, itās so cool to see them finally all together. Theyāre all based (at least loosely) on the canon banner designs, along with each empiresā resources and my interpretation of their different aesthetics.
In order weāve got:
Rivendell, the Cod Empire, Pixandria
Pearlās Farmlands, the Ocean Empire, Mezalea
The Crystal Cliffs, Mythland, the Grimlands
House Blossom, the Undergrove, the Lost Empire
I recommend zooming in to check out the details - I had a lot of fun deciding on the different materials and shapes that would work best for each kingdom!
Bonus Pearl, because honestly nothing can top this:
Itās been over an hour since you were bit, and you still havenāt turned into a zombie. Youāve also been oddly nonchalant about the whole thing. Your group is starting to suspect you werent human to begin with.
Okay, so I absolutely planned to make this guy a vampire, but then someone reminded me of a better idea.
~~~
Getting bitten by a zombie shouldnāt have been a relief, but I was so tired. All the panic and the scrambling for safety, and the paranoia that someone may have been infected without saying anything, and the aggravating frustration that this is so stupid; this shouldnāt be happening ā it wears on the soul. So when I got my arm too close in pulling someone else to safety, and lost a painful chunk, all I could do was yell about it then get away.
Everyone saw, of course. Not that I would have hidden it from them because Iām not that kind of jackass, but it was embarrassing. Rookie mistakes get you killed. Or zombified, which is basically the same thing.
I didnāt object when the group locked me in a side room while they decided what to do long-term. I didnāt really know this gaggle of survivors that well, after all, and they easily could have just shoved me outside to join the shambling hordes. Nice of them not to. Those hordes will rip you apart if youāre not rotten enough.
So I just settled in as best I could on the folding chair among the boxes of junk, bandaged my arm with Kleenex and tape, then waited. The bandage was really just so it would stop dripping on my pants. I might as well be comfortable in my last minutes.
Those last minutes sure were boring. It had to be close to an hour by now.
I called through the door, āHey, anybody got a magazine or something? Thereās nothing to do in here.ā
Iād hoped they would shove something under the door, but instead they just burst into furtive conversation. I sighed. Maybe there was something to read in the boxes. Pretty sure it was just office supplies, though.
I was turning the nearest box in search of labels when a voice sounded at the door.
āAre you still okay?ā asked whatshisface the tall guy. Jared.
āYeah, so far,ā I said. āNot gonna lunge at you if you open the door.ā
āHow are you still okay?ā he asked.
āUh, what?ā was my witty response.
Keep reading
Honestly the biggest disappointment I had researching ABC was that medieval authors did not, in fact, see the creatures they were describing and were trying their best to describe them with their limited knowledge while going āwhat the fuck⦠what the fuckā¦ā
Instead all those creatures you know came about from transcription and translation errors from copying Greco-Roman sources (who themselves got them from travelersā tales from Persia and India - rhino -> unicorn, tiger -> manticore, python -> dragon, and so on).
So unicorns are real
behold⦠a unicorn
I always thought animals in medieval manuscripts looked like the result of having to draw say. A Tree Kangaroo, but your only source for what it looked like was your friend who heard it from a fellow who knows a man who swears he saw one once, whilst very drunk and lost, and I am SO PLEASEDĀ to find out this is, in fact, the case.
Questing Beast
- Neck of a snake
- body of a leopard
- haunches of a lion
- feet off a hart (deer)
So is it
Orā¦.
donāt forget that some of the legendary creatures they were describing were from other peopleās mythos which were passed down in the oral tradition for gods know how long. You know what existed in Eurasia right around the time we were domesticating wolves into dogs?
these beasties. For a long time, science had them down as going extinct 200 thousand years ago, but then we found some bones from 36 thousand years ago. Which, yāknow, is quite a difference. Since you can bet that any skeleton we find is not literally the last one of its kind to live, many creatures have date ranges unknowably far outside the evidence.
In South Asia there were cultures that described a man-beast/troll forrest giantĀ whoās knuckles dragged the ground, and everybody from the west was sure it was superstitious mumbo jumbo, but you know what used to live there?
And did you know that some of the earliest white colonizers of the Americas heard accounts that there were natives still alive who had seen and hunted and eaten a great hairy beast, shaggy like the buffalo but much bigger, with a long thin nose like a snake and two giant fangs⦠so, like, mammoths, you know? but they were totally discounted because europeans of the time were like, elephants live in Africa and arenāt hairy, you canāt fool us, pranksters!
Anyway, the point is between the early writing game of telephone description thing talked about by OP, and the discounting of native cultural accuracy, Iām pretty sure most legendary creatures are in fact real animals one way or anotherĀ
It canāt explain every single legendary creature, but yes, this is super important. Because History relies on written sources, it tends to sweep oral tradition under the rug, even if thereās a lot of interesting informations in it.
And itās not just living animals that were badly described, or which descriptions got exaggerated over the course of centuries or through translation errors. Sometimes, people finding fossil bones of extinct animals might have also influenced some myths!
By now this is pretty well-known but it has been theorised that the Greek myth of the cyclops was started when people found Deinotherium skulls. Now you might say, uh, how is it possible to think a cousin of the elephant is a huge human dude with one eye?
Well-
- the big nasal opening kinda looks like an eye if you have no idea what kind of animal had this kind of skull (you can read more about this theory in this old National Geographic article if you like).
Hereās a less well-known one; the griffin is a mythological hybrid with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The earliest traces of this myth come from ancient Iranian and ancient Egyptian art, from more than 3000 BC. In Iranian mythology, itās called Ų“ŪŲ±ŲÆŲ§Łā (shirdal, ālion eagleā). Now, itās been the subject of some debate and itās not confirmed, but thereās a theory that people might have seen some Protoceratops and Psittacosaurus fossils in Asia and might have interpreted it as āa lion with an eagleās headā:
Check the āoriginā part of the wikipedia page for āgriffinā if you want to find more sources for this theory and for the arguments against it! Again, itās just a theory, but I think itās super cool.
This is a pretty well accepted theory for why dragons (or animals we group as like dragons, eg wyverns and drakes) are seen in mythos almost worldwide - because people found dinosaur bones, looked at them, and wentĀ āoh fuck whatās that? some bigā¦. lizardy thing?ā and then created dragons.
Also many deagon legends are simply exaggerations of well-known living reptiles like snakes and crocodilians.a
It also explains why dragons can look so different in the myths of the various regions.
In asia, Dragons tend to look very long and snake like:
One of the most common dinosaurs that used to like in the asia region, so would have been the most common fossils found by people:
The Mamenchisaurus, this thing is just all neck and tail! You find just half a fossilised skeleton of this monster, you can easily end up thinking of a long snake-like beast.
South America also has legends snake-like dragons among some of its peoples:
What fossils from pre-historic south America could be found?
The Titanoboa, which can easily grow to be 40 feet long.
In North America there is the Piasa Bird
Which wikipedia tells me comes from ā the large Mississippian culture city of Cahokia,ā itās describes as
What fossils could have been found in that region:
Pterosaur, and Triceratops. Features of both sets of skeletons could have been merged into one legendary creature.
Then we get our European style dragon:
One of the most common fossils that could have been found was a CetiosaurusĀ
which, despite being a herbivore, looked to have a mouth of sharp looking teeth, consistant with a dragons.
Dragons amongst the peoples of Africa are even more varied, but most revolve around some kind of giant snake-like creature. As a quick example, weāll take Dan Ayido Hwedo commonly found in West African mythology.
Fossils in that area could have been included the Aegyptosaurus:
A quick google search tells me that most Sauropods: well known for being long necked and long tailed, are found in Africa.
If you found only a half complete skeleton of this thing; which is likely, because itās rare to find a complete dinosaur skeleton, you could easily think of a giant snake monster.
IIRC, another possible explanation for long snake-like dragons/sea serpents in Africa couldāve been Basilosaurus, a whale from the PaleogeneĀ whose skeleton looked like this:Ā
A lot of the most complete specimens have been found in Egypt.Ā
Adult SFF edition
High/Epic Fantasy
The Lies of Locke Lamora: heist fantasy following a band of misfits! It has morally gray characters, fun banter but heartwrenching moments and a pretty complex plot. Itās a classic to sayĀ āif you liked Six of Crows and want to try adult SFF try thisā and itās probably true.Ā
Kushielās Dart: a political fantasy tome loosely inspired by Europe in the Renaissance. Pretty heavy on romance and erotica (with BDSM elements) as it follows a courtesan navigating the political scene. It has an amazing female villain.
A Darker Shade of Magic: probably the easiest way to approach adult fantasy. It has multiple Londons and a pretty unique magic system and concept, plus a crossdressing thief, knives and great banter.Ā
The Poppy War: grimdark fantasy (TW: abuse, self harm, rape, drug abuse), inspired by Chinese history. Itās adult, but follows younger MCs and the unique blend of different historical periods/inspirations makes it extremely interesting. The characters are extremely fucked up in the best possible way, plus the use of shamanism is awesome.
The Sword of Kaigen: if you liked The Poppy War you could like this one. The Sword of Kaigen is an Asian-inspired militaristic fantasy, with elemental magic, a badass housewife dealing with her past and hiding a sword in her kitchenās floor. It has interesting and nuanced family dynamics and a great reflection on propaganda and the use of narratives.
The Priory of the Orange Tree: high fantasy, featuring dragons, a F/F romance and pretty complex world building. The author reuses typical fantasy tropes and roles in a fresh way. Very readable in spite of its length.
Empire of Sand: inspired by Mughal India, this one focuses on culture and religion and has great slow burn romance (TW: abuse, slavery). Itās pretty slow paced, but the payoff is great. Also a good āYA crossoverā.
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms: first book in a companion novel trilogy, following a young woman who finds herself at the center of a vicious political struggle, as sheās suddenly become the heir to the throne.Ā
Black Sun: first book in a new series by Rebecca Roanhorse, inspired by pre-Columbian societies and cultures. It mainly focuses on religious and political conflicts. TW for abuse, mild body horror and suicide (not very graphic). Nice inclusion of lgbt rep across the whole cast + one of the main characters is blind. Great world building!
Historical Fantasy
The Night Circus: perfect transition from YA to Adult for a reader, The Night Circus is a gorgeous historical fantasy romance. The authorās writing is amazing, the descriptions and the subtlety of the main charactersā relationship are to die for.
The City of Brass: political/historical fantasy tome featuring Middle Eastern mythology. It follows younger MCs (honestly another series that could be a good way to approach adult SFF) and has great character growth throughout the series. The first book has some more trope-y elements, but the payoff is worth it.Ā
The Golem and The Djinni:Ā historical fantasy (if you loved The Night Circus you could like this one), following two mythical creatures as they navigate New York in 1899. Slow burn romance, rich descriptions, fascinating combination of Jewish and Syrian folklore.
Gods of Jade and Shadow:Ā aĀ fantasy bildungsroman set in Mexico during the Jazz age. Another great way to approach adult SFF as it follows a young girl on a life changing adventure. It features Mayan mythology and a god slowly becoming human.
The Ghost Bride: set in Malaya in 1893, it follows the daughter of a ruined man as she receives the proposal to become a ghost bride. Lovely setting, rich in culture and extremely atmospheric.
The Bear and The Nightingale:Ā a coming of age story inspired by Russian folklore. Another great way to start reading adult SFF: itās very atmospheric and fairy tale-like. Also frost demons are better than men.
Queen of the Conquered: first book in a fantasy duology(?) set in an alternate version of the Caribbean at the time of Scandinavian colonisation. It followsĀ Sigourney, a biracial woman (her mother was a slave, freed by her father) and the only islander who is allowed to own and use kraft and therefore has a position of privilege, which she constantly abuses, while telling herself sheās doing it for the islandersā benefit. The book is hard to read, because the MC is no hero and her POV can be quite challenging to get through, but if youāre up for it Iād totally recommend this. (TW: slavery, abuse, death).
The Binding: very minimal fantasy elements, set in a world vaguely reminiscent of 19th century England. Iād say this book is about humans and self discovery. Itās about cowardice and the lies we tell ourselves and those we wish we could tell ourselves. M/M relationship. (TW: abuse, sexual assault, pretty graphic suicide scene).
The Lions of Al-Rassan:Ā this one has minimal fantasy elements, much like other Kay books, as it reads more like an alternate history. Using Moorish Spain as a template, it deals with the conflict between Jews, Muslims and Christians. Much like Under Heaven and most of his historical fantasy it shows common people being swept up in dramatic events.Ā
Urban Fantasy
The Divine Cities trilogy: starting with City of Stairs, it follows a female diplomat and spymaster(!!). The whole trilogy features an interesting discussion about godhood, religion, fanatism, politics, without ever being boring or preachy. It has complex and rich world building and a pretty compelling mystery.
Foundryside: heist fantasy following a thief as sheās hired to steal a powerful artifact that may change magical technology as she knows it. Also, slow burn F/F romance.
Jade City:Ā aĀ wuxia inspired, gangster urban fantasy. Great family dynamics, very interesting political and economical subplots.Ā
One for My Enemy: sort of a modern Romeo and Juliet, but set in New York, starring two magical gangster families. The female characters are to die for.Ā Ā
Trail of Lightning: inspired by Native mythology and the idea of subsequent worlds. It has a kickass MC and a good mix of original elements and typical UF tropes. You could like this if you liked the Kate Daniels series.
American Gods:Ā a classic of the genre, pretty much brilliant in how it reuses old mythology in a modern setting.
Retellings
Spinning Silver:Ā a very loose retelling of Rumpelstiltskin, with a gorgeous atmosphere. It mainly follows female characters from different social and economical backgrounds and reuses the original tale to challenge the antisemitic ideas around the role of the moneylander.
The Queens of Innis Lear: fantasy retelling of King Lear, very atmospheric and gorgeously written. Slow paced, but very satisfying build up, lots of backstabbing and miscommunication. (heads up though, one of the MCs is coded as aroace and I found the rep pretty bad on that. The book does feature casual bisexual rep though, which was great)
Lady Hotspur: genderbent retelling of Henry IV, set in the same world as The Queens of Innis Lear. Lesbian and bisexual rep. Heavy on political subplots, features ambitious women growing into their roles.
Deathless: sort of a retelling ofĀ Koschei the Deathless set in the first half of the 20th century. Brilliant reuse of Russian folklore to weave together politics and history. It does have pretty brutal descriptions of war, morally gray characters, unhealthy relationships and overall a lot of mindfuckery.
Space Opera
A Memory Called Empire: space opera inspired by the Mexica and middle period Byzantium. It focuses on topics like colonialism and the power of narratives and language. It has one of the best descriptions of what itās like to live in between spaces Iāve ever read. Also very interesting political intrigue and has a slow burn F/F romance (and a poly relationship recalled through flashbacks).
Ninefox Gambit:Ā a Korean-inspired space opera with a magic system based on math. Itās honestly quite convoluted and difficult to follow, but it also features some of the best political intrigue Iāve ever read. Plenty of lying, backstabbing and mind games. It also features lesbian and bisexual rep and an aroace side character (TW: mass shooting, sexual assault).
The Light Brigade: militaristic space operaĀ set in a not-so-defined future in which corporations rule Earth and space in general. The book follows a newly enlisted soldier as they go through gruelling training and experience the side effects of being broken down into atoms to travel at the speed of light. Itās a heavy book, featuring raw descriptions of war, and quite difficult to follow (non-linear timelinesā¦) but itās also an amazing critique of capitalism and political propaganda (TW: death, mass shooting).
Gideon the Ninth: pretty much lesbian necromancers in space. Very loose world building, but a fun mystery full of banter. Can be quite confusing in the beginning, but a relatively easy and fun way to approach science fiction.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet: character driven space opera featuring a found family journeying through space. A fun read, that also deals with topics such as sexuality and race. Quite easy to go through, as the world building and plot arenāt particularly complex themselves. Also features a F/F romance.Ā
Science Fiction-Fantasy that I canāt fit anywhere else
Vicious: college roommates put themselves through near-death experiences to obtain super powers, only everything goes wrong. Follows a great band of misfits (and pretty much everyone is morally gray).
Middlegame: a brilliant and complex tapestry of alternate timelines, following telepathically connected twins trying to escape the alchemist that wants to use them to obtain godhood (TW: attempted suicide).
Piranesi: the long awaited return of Susanna Clarke, Piranesi is an odd, mysterious book set in a house with infinite rooms and endless corridors, apparently inhabited by only two people.Ā
Bonus Novella recs: novellas are amazing and donāt sleep on them!
The Empress of Salt and Fortune:Ā an Asian-inspired fantasy novella, it gives a voice to people usually silenced by history. It follows a cleric (non binary rep) as they chronicle the story of the late empress, retold through objects that she used in her life. It focuses on bonds between women and the power that lies in being unnoticed.Ā Ā
The Black Godās Drums:Ā an urban fantasy novella, based on Orisha mythology and set in an alternate, sort of steampunk, New Orleans.Ā
The Haunting of Tram Car 015: alternate steampunk Cairo populated by supernatural entities. It has a compelling mystery, starring a great lead.
This Is How You Lose the Time War: epistolary set during a time-travel war, F/F romance and gorgeous prose.Ā
The Citadel of Weeping Pearls: a novella set in the Xuya universe (a series of novellas/short stories set in a timeline where Asia became dominant, and where the space age has empires of Vietnamese and Chinese inspiration), but can be read as a standalone. Itās a space opera featuring a disappeared citadel and the complex relationship between the empress and her daughter as war threatens her empire.
To Be Taught, If Fortunate:Ā an incredibly heartwarming and yet meaningful novella about research and the meaning of it. Itās the tale of 4 astronauts on a crowdfunded mission to explore space, to observe and report without conquering. Itās written in lovely prose and is very casual in its lgbt rep.
The Deep: very good novella set in an underwater society built by the descendants of African slave women that were tossed overboard. Itās not an easy read at all, as it deals with trauma, both personal and generational ones.Ā
Bonus short story collections recs
A Cathedral of Myth and Bone: 16 short stories featuring myth, legend and faith, that mainly focus on women reclaiming their agency.Ā
The Paper Menageries and Other Stories: features plenty of different fantasy and science fiction subgenres. The Paper Menagerie in particular is an extremely moving tale.
Conservation of Shadows: science fiction-fantasy short stories that focus on topics like colonisation and the role of art and language.Ā
Graphic Novel
Monstress: series set in an alt 1900s matriarchal Asia, following a teenage girl who survived a war and shares a connection with a monster thatās slowly transforming her. (TW: slavery, death).
āAnd I think⦠thatās exactly what it wants.ā
OHMYGOD
Burn Notice. [S1.E1: Pilot.]
This is legitimately how Iāve broken into a thousand places like just act like youāre meant to be there and if someone actually ends up calling you out on it just be super confused
#I would be an excellent pentester and actually have considered it as a job many a time#when I was a kid (7-14ish) my grandmother was in the hospital a lot and I was a bored kid that no one was really watching#and we spent days and days at the hospital over the course of those years#so Iād wander around and it became a challenge to see where it could get into without gettting caught#and the answer is basically everywhere#like ther is no legit reason for an 11 year old to be in the morgue but I was tall for my age and I would carry a cup of coffee#and look irritated to be there like someone woke me up for this#and no one would question me#people would ask where are you headed and if you just exhaustedly point through a security door 97% of the time they will swipe their card#-and open it for you
I want to add that I donāt make a habit of this now that I am a law abiding adult, but recently I accidentally did this again. Having been used to having my run of hospitals and walking basically anywhere as a child, I was visiting a friend in the hospital just before covid and I was legitimately exhausted and carrying a coffee cup cuz it was like 5:30am or something dumb, and I went to leave and get to the bottom floor and iām likeĀ āthis is not the lobbyā and I walked around for a bit and people kept holding doors for me so I traveled through many corridors, and nothing looked familiar, and then I realized every single door was a key card swipe and everyone had mag-stripe badges with varying security levels and I realized I had gotton onto a staff elevator with the staff, who had swiped their card to go down into a high-security area of the building, and people had just been letting me through all these security doors.
So then I had to out myself and be likeĀ āUm I accidentally broke into you high-security wing, please show me the door, Iām literally just trying to leave this hospitalā and I had to get like searched and stuff.Ā
And what was funny was that while I was blissfully walking around assuming I belonged, No one questioned ANYTHING and in fact, were violating protocols left and right to let me through, but the VERY SECOND I realized I was not where I was supposed to be and let that show on my face, like three people in the hall confronted me.Ā
So the take away is, be confident that you belong, look exhausted and like you donāt want to be there, and carry a cup of coffee. It will open pretty much all doors.
@clutchkuza I feel like you need to hear this lol
No joke, Burn Notice is a great show. If you like Leverage, give Burn Notice a try (its available on Hulu and Prime iirc) and frfr, confidence and an excuse are all you need to get around places
This works I accidentally broke into someoneās whole ass home a month or so ago and uhhh it went fine because Iām short white and VERY CONFUSED
One time while I was in Rome, I was busy admiring the ruins and not paying attention to signage, got lost, and ended up in some kind of archaeological dig or restoration. Not knowing it was off-limits (having missed all signage, as previously stated), I started peeking around all the stone stuff, wandering off the path, and most importantly (to this story), poking around in a hole that had been dug into the ground. I was careful not to touch anything, but still, clearly (to anyone who wasnāt as oblivious as me) this was not a place a tourist was meant to be.
I finally attracted the notice of someone who was meant to be part of this restoration project when I came back up from the hole. He quickly came over to ask me, in Italian, what Iām sure were the very normal questions ofĀ āWho are you?ā, āWhat are you doing here??ā, etc.
Problem: I do not speak Italian.
My brainās solution: Quick, what language do we speak thatās close?!Ā
And that is how I wandered up out of a hole in a Roman ruin without warning and began speaking ancient Latin to an archaeologist.
This manās face went through 15 different absolutely floored expressions in ten seconds, like you could physically see him going through the thought process ofĀ āHave I encountered a ghost from ancient Rome? No, ghosts arenāt real. But if ghosts not real, how Latin??? Fellow researcher??? Supposed to be here???ā
So this is the story of how I was allowed to walk away without issue at all after blatantly trespassing upon the ruins of ancient Rome, because if you speak Latin, where else would you belong?
Both literally and figuratively:
When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
My story of accidentally breaking in, there was this sculpture garden and I was there with my mum and my great aunt, but not really because we were actually just having tea at the teahouse outside the sculpture garden without any plans to actually go in, it was just a catch up tea kind of thing. But I was a bored teenager, so I went exploring, and after getting jumpscared by a tractor and jumpscaring some bird of prey that left a bloody leg of a rabbit behind on the path, I found myself in a field with a gate and growing up in the English countryside I donāt think itās considered trespassing if you walk into some farmerās field, as long as youāre respectful and walk around the crops and donāt piss the guy off, and anyway I was a bored kid and I didnāt really care, so I hopped the gate into the next field and immediately knew I was not supposed to be there, because something weird was being built there? At the edge of the field there was an opening to a wooded area and I walked over and there was a sign that said something along the line ofĀ āexhibit coming soonā and I knew I was in the sculpture garden. See, I didnāt go back to the gate and leave the way Iād came. Instead I walked back through the sculpture garden, tbh I think I looked more like a lost and confused child rather than having any confidence cause I was terrified of being caught, but I was also like, old enough that no one was gonna offer to help me find my parents. Eventually I got to the entrance and realised if I didnāt act confident I was gonna get caught so I just. Walked out of the sculpture garden, past the ticket booth, and I donāt know why they didnāt question this 5ā²0 fifteen year old walking out alone but idk I just walked back to the tearoom and had some cake
imagine hiring an assassin and they talk to you in a customer service voice
"Hello, how can I help you today? Wonderful, can I get a first and last name? And how would I spell that? Awesome. And would you happen to have an address for this individual? And place of work? Fantastic.
Now, I'm going to give you a number, and I'm going to ask that you send in a photo of your target alongside any additional information you may have- family members, security, combat training, medical conditions, just anything you can think of that might be helpful.
Wonderful, you are all good. All we need now is a piece of government-issued ID, for insurance purposes, and a location for payment pickup. We accept cash, gold, processed uranium, and etransfer.
I'm sorry, we don't take american express.
Good, okay, so it looks like we are all set- when the job is complete, you will be notified VIA discreet codeword that a stranger will whisper to you on a crowded street.
We do not issue receipts, but if you'd like, I can arrange for a specific breed of tropical flower to be sent to your home address. Our associates will be able to validate it should the need arises.
And is that everything you were looking for today? Great! Thank you for coming to us. Have a nice day!"
Alternatively,
"I'm sorry sir, but I'm afraid the Pope is a high-status target that is beyond our area of service.
Yes, I- no, I'm sorry, I'm not able to do that for you.
Okay. Okay. Yes, I understand.
Sir, if you're going to use that sort of language, you should know that our HR department does operate in a hands-on capacity.
Wonderful. You take care."
Oh dear
i think it's fucked up that there are plants that decided they wanted to eat meat
a plant's job is literally to just exist but the venus flytrap chose violence
what if i gently laid an uncooked steak on the soil for it to absorb
my tree biology teacher fed her calcium-deficient tree a whole-ass bbq rib bone - she stuck it in the ground near the base of the tree (after eating the meat off of it), and when she came back to collect it to show the tree biology class it was GONE
the tree had grown a root up through the center of it & out through the sides
also thereās an old story about a man who was buried beneath a tree, and when they went to exhume the body it had been completely absorbed by the treeās roots- you could see the shape of the body in the way the roots grew, splitting up for clearly defined arms and legs. trees will absolutely eat a steak if you bury it & they need the nutrients.
thatās horrifying! thank you
whereās that old video about the venus trap..... you know the one
Trees always eat meat they just usually do it when itās dead with their long spindly straw roots itās just a bit unusual for their leaves to unhinge their jaws and eat meat live
