A Stifling Fear || Todd & Gabriel
He walked alone. But then again, he always walked alone at night, making his way through the street with his hood pulled over his head. To readily attract unwanted attention to yourself was plain stupidity. Even he was smarter than that, and he held no claims in regard to his own intelligence, because intelligent people kept their wand somewhere they had easy access to it. A sudden urge had flashed through his brain before he left his dingy flat, telling him to leave it at home, and for some subconscious reason even unknown to him, he had obliged it. Gabriel knew he was fully capable of protecting himself if the need arose    he had werewolf abilities and auror training to thank for that     but it was safer all the same to avoid making a scene. Besides, he quite enjoyed slinking around, catching glimpses of other people while they glimpsed nothing of him back in return; it was a good trade.
It was one of the few times heâd been given the day off. Gabriel had messaged his father a couple of days in advance, asking him if heâd wanted him to come visit, but his father had sent back a hasty reply, saying that he didnât need anyone to take care of him and that Gabriel was better off staying where he was, so heâd spent the day brewing more Wolfsbane potion. After having done it so many times, one would think that he had it perfected down to an art, but if he let his attention stray for even half of an hour, some component would fail horribly and turn the potion into a failure. Heâd read a bit of old literature, updated his supply of Wolfsbane    it was always better to have more at hand just in case something went wrong, and had then gone out on his own. All in all, it had been a good waste of a day.
Taking a left at the next intersection of the narrow, winding street, he noticed someone stumbling past into another smaller alleyway. Gabriel didnât think too much of it at first. After all, it was likely that someone had simply had too much to drink and was now suffering the consequences they well deserved. But instead of the muttering, singing, or the groaning incoherence that usually followed drunken stumbling, all he heard was sharp intakes of breath, alert, as if whoever it was was having trouble breathing. Frowning, he shook it off before he heard the heavy thump from behind him, and he hesitated before reluctantly turning around to find out what had happened. Ironically, Todd Campbell, the one who had given him the ingredients to brew his Wolfsbane, lay passed out in the alleyway. Taking a whiff as he walked up to him, Gabriel noticed Todd didnât smell of spirits at all    not that he had expected him to, anyway. He leaned forward, shaking Toddâs shoulders, but still, no response. Scanning his body a couple of times for his wand     strangely, he ended up finding that it was placed behind Toddâs ear    he withdrew it and conjured a non-verbal stream of water, splashing Todd in the face.
Todd felt the cold water hit his face and jolt him back into reality, and he sat up straight, looking around him wildly - ready for something with sharp fangs to jump out at him from out of nowhere, to sink their teeth into his neck and - no. There wasn't anyone around but the familiar face of a customer who looked perplexed, albeit slightly apathetic, to be looking over him with Todd's own wand in his hand. Breathing heavily, Todd ran a clammy hand over his face and shook his head as he tried to calm his breathing down. He could still feel what he imagined had been the cool, marble fingers of a vampire closing around his shoulder, but he must have imagined it, because there was no one around but Gabriel. Still trying to regain his normal breathing pace, and soaked in water from his head down to halfway through his shirt, it took him a minute or so of forced relaxation to utter anything out of his mouth. He wanted to feel bad, that the other person was standing over him with no idea what was going on, but he had to control his own thoughts enough to get out of his state of anxiety before he thought of anything else.
"I - er, how'd you find me?" He asked once he'd regained his composure. Todd was completely disoriented coming back from his fainting spell, as he was sure was what happened. His hands were still shaking slightly, and small tremors rocked his body. He pushed himself back into the wall of the alley and motioned for Gabriel to give him his wand back - some of his shakes were partly due to the cold, and he wanted to warm himself. Todd wasn't really looking at the other wizard, he was more so focusing on his hands and how they were still shaking. His eyesight was off, blurry, and his eyes kept moving in and out of focus. "... Thank you, er, I don't usually... do things like that. I don't really know what... what happened." Todd thought back to the customer he'd served, the jar that smashed. He shuddered again, not from the cold, and he tried to focus more intently on keeping his eyes steady on his shaking hands.Â
He realized how odd the entire situation must have been to an outsider, because there was no plausible reason for him to have acted the way he did without explaining the story in detail. It wasn't something he wanted to relive, but he felt as if the person who had helped him (though by dousing him in water) deserved some sort of explanation. What was the explanation, though? Todd wasn't entirely sure why seeing a vampire had set him in such a swing, it had certainly never happened to him before and he'd thought he had gotten over the situation. He spoke well enough with Estelle and other vampires, but they hadn't been showing any distinct characteristics, like fangs. He ran a hand through his hair as he thought, still slightly wet and curling as it dried. "Er, what are you doing here, anyways?" Todd asked, trying to divert the conversation away from himself.
If youâre using âfunâ as a very loose term then sure. You really want to lift it?
... Maybe not. I don't know; I'm not well versed with these things.
Could we not just levitate it
We could but doesn't manual labour seem more fun?
Iâm not really sure how thatâll help, but we can give it a try.
Worth a try? It's a little heavy to lift up by myself, can you help?

Okay, I think we might be in over our heads here. Thereâs no way weâre actually going to get this to work.
I think if we put it upside down it'll work better?
[her eyes widen and she frowns] Okay, well, thanks for telling me that, Iâm just going to take the eyes now.
You actually want them? Well, okay, here. [He hands them over.]
Iâm sorry, this must seem like a bit much for some eel eyes, but â [narrows her eyes] â dâyou know what the owl looked like?Â
Snowy and white?
[opens up the envelope and stares at the letter for a little] Why is this empty? [now way too engrossed, she starts talking to herself] Automatic erasing charm? But no, thatâs complex magic, it would be hard for somebody to perform that unless they had the simpler spell. [her tapped her wand on it twice, watching the tip of the wand go black, and her eyebrows rise] âŚNo. Not possible. [now directing her attention to the person in front of her] Is it possible to return this to the sender?
I don't think so, their owl already flew out of the shop when the message was delivered.

Yes, please, thatâd be helpful.
[He fishes it out of his pocket and passes it over.] I don't know what's going on but there was money in the envelope so you don't need to pay or anything.
Wait, no, what, why? I didnât order the pickled eel eyes?
Did the person who actually ordered them give a name?
They said their name was Adrianna and that it had to be sent on express mail. It was a letter, though - I can show you it?
I didnât order any order?
Well, someone did for this location? Where can I put these pickled eel eyes?
âŚWhat order?
The one you ordered?
I have no idea why youâre here, but try not to get lost, hm? I canât imagine what kind of apparation mistake you could have made to land at my doorstep.
... I'm here with your order?

the kind
"Who, Todd Campbell? Oh, he's that guy from a while back. I think he was twelve when he was reaped, no one volunteered for him, and he went on to be the kindest tribute the Capital had seen yet. It was something about his character, but he was nice and likeable, and even though that usually doesn't get you sponsors, it got that guy sponsors. In training he didn't do half bad, he scored a six, but it was just a six. If it wasn't for his interview, where he swore not to kill any of the other tributes, claiming they were his 'friends' he would have been done for."
"In the arena, he stayed by himself, nearly freezing one night due to a temperature switch in their desert arena from hot to cold when the night came. He stumbled into an old campfire and reset the kindling, if he hadn't he would have died that night. Not much else is known about his games, they were uneventful. The other tributes killed each other off, the last one before Todd died from his injuries from the last battle. The guy sort of went down as the innocent kid who couldn't hurt a fly. He's only still a mentor because no one else in his district has won since, so he has to take the job. If he didn't have to he'd probably stay back in his district and relax during the games."
Stage Fright || Bailey & Todd
It was that moment that she decided she liked Todd. They had all grown up, knowing how he won and his story but this was the first time she could see that it was genuine and not just a ploy to win. âThen Iâm going to stick with calling them friends.â She said with a nod. The careers werenât the people she wanted to be like. âIt seems like Iâm dehumanising them by calling them anything else. They are people with families and friends. I donât want to see them as anything less than that.â She didnât want to talk about winning or if she had a chance. Being from District Twelve already meant that she didnât have a chance but she didnât want Todd to think she was giving up so soon. She wasnât giving up, she just wasnât oblivious.Â
Bailey swallowed down her distaste for Toddâs answer. It was about creating sympathy and not just answering a simple question. Bailey decided to try again, she stopped playing with her hair and straightened her back. âItâs just me and my papa back home.â She kept the pausing, changing her father to the personal title that she called him. âMy mother died when I was young and heâs all Iâve got. Iâm all heâs got. Iâm going to win so I can get home to him. I donât want to leave him by himself.â Bailey couldnât bring herself to say the worlds "Iâm going to win." Not when she thought it was a lie. Lying had never been her strong suit but she could be vague.Â
He was glad Bailey understood, he thought she would. There had to be humanity in the tributes, it was that or things would turn into an all out bloodshed. That wasn't something Todd would be able to watch. "I'm glad, but remember, you can't ever forget that they're what's between you and winning. No matter how bad it sounds, you're going to be put into a position where you can either kill or be killed, and you can't hesitate in choosing to kill." Todd liked Bailey, and he wanted to see her go far. If she scored well and did a good enough job with her interview, he could get her enough sponsors to help if she needed it, and he would do all he could to make sure she had the support she needed, Bailey and Dean both.
"Good, Bailey. You sound a lot better, and I'm sorry you have to do this. I don't like being someone I'm not as much as you must, but I can't do anything for you if you don't do this." He paused, then said, "I meant to ask you earlier, but are you and Dean going to work together in the arena? I spoke to him today already, but I need to make sure so that I can sell you as a team to sponsors or individually." Todd didn't like the idea of selling them as much as most of the mentors, but it was a necessary evil in order to ensure his ability to help them. They would get what they needed.
