“I thought we had forever”
Sami Meguetounif x Santiago Ramos
Will he win- OH MY GOD THEY BOTH CRASHED, the one of the announcers yelled.
They are both lying there in the car. They are not getting up!”
Sami lost control of car and drove into Santi. Santiago went into the barriers and Sami’s car hit Santi car.
“Sami are you ok?” The engineer yelled. Sami opened his eyes slowly, feeling groggy. “What the hell happened? His voice was raspy. Then he looked up to where Santi was. When he saw Santi. Sami saw blood pouring down his face and Sami felt panic rising in him. “ Shit! Is Santi ok” as he tried to get out of the car” But then he start feeling dizzy and fell back down. The last thing he saw was Santiago sleeping. He looked peaceful despite everything. “Santi no” he croaked. It was the last thing he said before he fainted.
It’s been months since Sami lost him. Sami sat there holding Santi’s helmet, tears streaming down his face. Sami clutched the helmet like a lifeline. “Why did you have to go?”He wanted to scream until his lungs give out, until the pain feels like it has somewhere to go. But he sit here in silence instead, alone in our apartment. The apartment that once brimmed with life now feels hollow, like an empty shell of what used to be. Sami stares at a mug that had coffee in it. Santi’s favorite coffee. The one that he would drink every morning along with his favorite mug. Now probably disgusting but Sami didn’t have the strength to clean it or move it. He couldn’t get rid of the last things of Santi.
“How could everything go so wrong?” he whispered, his voice breaking as they leave his lips. His eyes burned from crying, but he couldn’t stop. His body ached but his heart felt more painful because it wanted him but he wasn’t here anymore, a dull reminder that maybe this is his punishment. For not being careful “Where are you?”“Why did you leave me?”He finally screamed, his voice shattering the quietness in the room But it’s no use. He’s gone. And now Sami is left here, left to pick up the pieces.
His gaze fell on a picture across the room. The sight pulled him back to a memory that was replayed thousand times in his mind.
“I have to say, you’ve been the hardest racer I’ve had to beat in a long time. And I don’t say that lightly, Meguetounif,” Santi said, his mischievous smile flashing at me—the one he had come to love.Sami smirked back at him, expecting the usual teasing, but there was something different in his eyes. Genuine. Vulnerable. It caught Sami off guard.“You’re not so bad yourself, Ramos,” he replied, unable to hide his smile.
That moment felt like yesterday to him. Now falling asleep at the kitchen table as exhaustion overtook him.
“You cheater!” Santi yelled, tackling Sami as sami tried to escape. Sami fought back, tickling his sides, and Santi doubled over, laughing uncontrollably.“NO, SAMI—STOP! Bahaha!”They were like kids, roughhousing and laughing until he accidentally shoved Sami down to the floor But as Sami fell. Sami took Santi with him as they both fell. Time seemed to stop. Santi landed on top of Sami, the sun spilling through the windows and highlighting his features. To Sami’s eyes. Santi looked like he wasn’t from this world. An ancient deity that Sami would devote his life to. They just stared at each other, frozen in the moment until Santi leaned down and kissed Sami. It was soft, hesitant, as if Santi wasn’t sure if Sami felt the same.
The kiss felt like nothing Sami experienced before. It never felt so right to him. It was like they were meant to be together, it felt like home to him. Like a piece finally completed the puzzle. It lit something inside Sami a fire he didn’t know existed. Sam kissed him back with more intensity, surprising Santi. They stop kissing for a second. Sami felt terrified. Did he push too far. His eyes went a little wide but then relaxed and put his hand to caress Sami cheek and leaned down to kiss Sami again. Santi started kissing Sami with the same passion that Sami gave last time. Both of them fully melted into each other. When they broke apart. Panting for air. Santi laid his head against Sami. Sami laughed softly, looking at Santi, like he was the missing piece hadn’t known he needed. Santi leaned his forehead against Sami “Do you feel it?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.Sami smiled and nodded. “I feel it.” Santi got up at little to look at Sami and giggled. “I feel like we’ll have forever,” Santiago said, his words soft but sure.
Sami woke up, jolted back to reality. The kitchen is dark now, the apartment as silent as ever. For a second, Sami prayed it was all a nightmare. That Santi was still here, still with him. That he would walk through the door and give him a hug and call Sami “mi amor.” But the weight in his chest reminded him that it wouldn’t happen. That Santiago Ramos, the man who took his heart and who he loved with every fiber of his being was gone and would never come back in Sami’s lifetime. Sami wanted to cry again, but felt too hollow, too drained. Sami felt devoid of joy, of happiness.
“I thought we’d have forever too Santi” Sami whispered into the emptiness with tears in his eyes.
