Queen Margrethe’s daisy earrings
Happy Birthday Daisy! Today is the 80th birthday of Denmark’s beloved monarch Queen Margrethe, affectionately known as Daisy. Her nickname is one she shares with her late grandmother, Princess Margaret of Connaught. The nickname derives from the French form of their shared name, Margeurite, which is an alternative name for a type of daisy. Coincidentally, the daisy is also the national flower of Denmark.
What she wore: Margrethe honours her and her ancestor’s shared nickname - and her country’s national flower - on a regular basis with daisy themed jewellery. One set which she often sports is by famed Danish designer Georg Jensen. His daisy themed collection is iconic, with Crown Princess Mary also owning the brooch. Mary’s daughter, Margrethe’s granddaughter Isabella, borrowed the daisy brooch from her mother for the funeral of Margrethe’s late husband Prince Henrik.
