I'm trying to get into Jonesy's post-zeppelin stuff (projects, solo albums etc.); what album/ songs do you think I should start with?
WEEEE!!! ANON! One of my favorite subjects. Sing in muse!!!! Let me tell you of the journey into Jonesy's post Zeppelin work so GRIM so DEPRAVED it will make you shake in your boots.
^^ I don't know, he?????
The best entry into this is Them Crooked Vultures - it's his most Zeppelin-esque post-Zeppelin effort (that’s a ridiculous sentence to look at). It’s a heavy, dynamic album that just has his hands all over it.
Recommended listening: No One Loves Me and Neither Do I, Elephants, Scumbag Blues, Spinning in the Daffodils
From there, I would travel to Zooma, his first solo album, before they made him sing (more on that later). This is going to be a wonderful primer for future adventures in Jonesy's music. He once remarked that he doesn't have a recognizable style, but I really beg to differ - his solo albums are quintessentially him.
Recommended listening: Grind, Snake Eyes, Nosumi Blues
a full dad, grandad even
Perhaps surprisingly after this, I think it's the perfect time to visit The Sporting Life, the avant-garde collab with Diamanda Galas. Don't worry, if you don't like it, you can always leave and come back. After getting to know Jonesy's marked style, it's so easy to fall into the monstrous riffs and get tangled up in Galas' incredible voice. First listen had me 😳, but after that, I was hooked hooked hooked.
Recommended listening: Skotoseme, Do You Take This Man?, Tony, Dark End of the Street
And then you're ready for the quintessential second solo album, The Thunderthief, that all of this journey has prepared you for. You might have visited earlier excitedly, only to be overwhelmed with FEELINGS (that's how I felt..........). Be ready to hear him sing on 4 tracks and be ready to not be ready for it. It's just so...pure? Still with mammoth carry over from Zooma stylistically but with the gravitas of a British actor who is taking his star turn in a Broadway musical ala the Wizard in Wicked. I can't stop listening to it as of late.
Recommended listening: Leafy Meadows, Daphne, Angry,Angry, Freedom Song
If you've gotten this far, congratulations!!! This is a formidable pilgrimage dearest! Now, you are ready to leap into his producing tracks, his arrangements, etc, etc. I'm still working through those personally, but if you get your hands on the Scream For Help soundtrack, you can bide your time with numbers like this:
I hope this was somewhat cogent and enlightening dearest anon! Apologies for my delay and also feel free to return after your journey and tell me of your travels!
it's fine i'm fine we're all fine
