Adam is being tested because he’s passive and just sits by and watches other people. So his game is all about taking the initiative. What I THINK Jigsaw wanted was for Adam to find the key in the bathtub as some sort of mini-puzzle. Same with the saws in the toilet, the key was supposed to be hidden in a way that Adam could reasonably find it and get out. The thing is, Amanda fucked everything up by just chucking the key into the bathtub, which is in line with how she would make traps inescapable/ruined the purpose of the trap.

It would also make sense that Adam was meant to be free because of the tape recorder. He had to use his shirt and a drainage plug just to get it when Jigsaw probably wanted him to just free himself and then walk over to grab the recorder. Because that’s an awkward way to start the game, imagine if Adam couldn’t figure out a way to get the tape recorder. Yes the games are hard, but Jigsaw at least wants the game to actually…you know, be played.

Okay, but now, Adam is free. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the game? Well, he’s free from his chain but not necessarily the bathroom. Assuming the bathroom is sealed shut from the other side, Adam is now a mobile player in the game. So now his game is to beat Dr. Gordon. He has to show Jigsaw that he took the initiative to save himself. And there’s several ways Adam could’ve done so. Maybe he can throw the gun away. Maybe he just acts like a total obstacle for the entire game and run the clock out. Maybe he tricks Gordon into giving him the bullet, thus denying Gordon the chance to shoot him. Either way, he has to prove to Jigsaw he wants to survive by taking the initiative for once in his life.

Also, it works in an ironic way. Adam, the guy who has been passive his entire life is the one with all the power in the room. Gordon, the doctor who’s used to getting what he wants, is the one who is helpless.

But now let’s say, Adam failed his awareness test and can’t find the key. Maybe Amanda hid that shit too well or Adam really is that stupid. Well, he can prove he has survival instincts by sawing his foot off to escape his chains. There were two saws there, maybe the second saw was the backup plan in case Adam couldn’t get past the first intended step with the key.

As for Gordon, this is where I have to fill in the blanks since this will only make sense if we assume some things about Jigsaw. I personally don’t think Jigsaw wanted Zepp to actually go through with killing Alison and Diana. Jigsaw only goes after people who he believes aren’t grateful for being alive. We see multiple times in the series that when it comes to people who are truly innocent (at least in his mind), he doesn’t put them in an actual trap. Corbett Denlon was gonna be found by Mark Hoffman while Tara and Brent Abbott weren’t in danger of dying.

“But what about the guy who Amanda had to stab to death to save herself? Or Jeff’s test subjects?” Well, this may be a stretch but John probably has a tier ranking of how he handles people who can’t control their destiny. If the person truly disgusts him or if that person’s death may be necessary to teach someone else a lesson, maybe then John is more partial to letting those people die in ways they can’t avoid. Amanda had to kill her drug dealer. Jeff had to feel what it meant to get people killed since he was obsessed with revenge. Eric Matthews already failed his test, thus he’s at the mercy of Riggs’ actions.

But even then, Alison and Diana still feels like a bridge too far, especially since they didn’t do anything to deserve death. They were just minding their own business. At the very least, the people in Jeff Denlon’s traps did do something that screwed over Jeff (I mean, one of them is the actual killer). And keep in mind, we don’t actually know what Zepp’s rules were since Adam cut the tape off. If the tape had been played out, I’m pretty sure there was gonna be some Jigsaw irony in his instructions. That killing Alison and Diana would actually doom him somehow. And yes, I personally believe John wouldn’t let an innocent child die, his whole backstory is about him wanting to be a father, being denied that chance, getting revenge on the guy responsible for Jill Tuck’s miscarriage, and then forming a bond with the little boy from Saw X.

Anyways, why am I bringing up all of this? Because for Gordon’s game, I don’t think it’s as simple as how the movie made it out to be. If Gordon’s game was just to kill Adam before 6, then the man clearly failed. But if that’s the case, why did Jigsaw save him in Saw 7/Saw 3D? He left Adam to die, but saved Gordon who failed his test?

No, I think Gordon just had to prove to Jigsaw that he was willing to do whatever it took to save his family. Alison and Diana are there to show the threat is POSSIBLY real, to show Gordon that this is not a joke. He doesn’t need to actually follow through with killing Adam, he just needs to show Jigsaw that he’s willing to go the distance. So that means Gordon could win by:

1) Sawing his foot off in an extreme attempt to reach the gun. This strengthens the idea that Gordon wasn’t really supposed to kill Adam since if Adam was intended to be free, then Adam could just throw the gun away. The actual test was the cutting of the foot, not killing Adam. I mean, that would retroactively justify why Jigsaw chose to be inside the room in the first place, he probably thought that he needed to get up immediately in order to save Gordon (or Adam if Adam failed step one and resorted to plan B).

2) Using ingenuity and cleverness to trick Adam into smoking the poisoned cigarette. In fact, the poisoned cigarette is just one possible way Gordon could have used his wits to kill Adam. Gordon could’ve still won if he thought outside the box, like maybe tricking Adam into getting close and then strangling him / slicing him with the saw.
